Do websites with dot com perform better than dot net?

Hi everyone,

I have a website with .net in the domain name, I purchased it and used it because the name I wanted was already taken at .com. Do sites with .com get more traffic than .net sites?

I feel like the average person might trust a site more if they have a .com in the domain.

Makes just about zero difference - it's all about how well they are marketed.

.com name is of course slightly more memorable for type in traffic.

Not necessarily, but dot com domain names are what we are more used to seeing. Any domain name can perform well if you promote it enough.

      • if you want to built a community of mountain bikers, then choose NET (or ORG). In this case, COM would be the wrong message. COM means business, COM does not mean "we are a community and we all help each other".

If you have a bike shop, then choose COM.

If your favorite COM domain is already taken: if you and the holder of the COM domain are direct competitors, then a few customers who want YOU will end up at your competitor, because they misspell the domain. So make sure your site doesn't look like a clone of the COM site.

Totally agreed, any domain name can be good as long as you promote it enough. No matter .COM or .NET

It all comes down to familiarity with domains and .com has been around the longest and hence, has the best branding/familiarity. Pretty much whatever search phrase a person comes up with, .com domains will be at the forefront of peoples mind for many years to come.

I agree with this. It's all about familiarity at the end of the day.

.com / .net / .org all perform fairly well. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's not like it's .info / .biz / .tv or anything.

I've never seen a significant difference between the two. Just whenever i did really good marketing, i made sales. .com or .net. I even made sales with the most generic domain name ever - because i had alot of products to sell, so i wanted my website to be a *general* classification.

But the .com or .net issue isn't major. Just the marketing is.

No difference as far as Rankings and SEO. However, for direct traffic in people remembering your Site it may be somewhat. But either one is fine, imo

Agreed. For SEO there isn't a huge difference, but think about trust factors. Facebook.com or Facebook.net - which are you more likely to trust and click on? Conversion should be what you think about not just SEO.

  • To repeat a few others, its definitely more memorable and sounds a bit more "legit" in the minds of people who don't understand domains. But even then, if there's a major price difference, I don't think it's worth much extra cash.

There is no difference in using a .COM or .NET domain. Traffic is solely depends on your marketing efforts. How you optimize your site for better performance and user friendly.

In Business .com is the number 1 choice because it is easy to remember and the most commonly used. I recommend finding a unique name or shortened version of your business name and getting a .com

.com also carries a little bit more Prestige in the consumers eye.

.com is the standard and is the "more professional" top level domain.

However, just make sure the owner of the .com doesn’t have a trademark on the name you’re after

I'm buying .net only when Google and other search engines have blacklisted the .com domain name.

    Here is some insight.

I really do not think the extension of your domain matters, either at all or VERY little to even worry about.

Reason is because I'm in a niche that has a .info as one of the leading pages for a search term.

What everyone has tried to say here is that it depends on how your average visitor will find your website.

For example, if you're talking to people around town or advertising on TV, then you almost have to have a .com version. But if your main traffic source is PPC ads, then anything from .net to .fish would work equally well. That's because people aren't typing your link, they're clicking it.

But then again, there's one simple solution here- when choosing domain names, find a name where you can buy the .com, .net and .org variations at the same time. Then you're covered no matter what and it doesn't matter what people type...they'll find you regardless.

If both are free, take the .com (or both to protect your brand). If the .com is taken, there is nothing wrong with choosing the .net. It is only a small difference.

In terms of performance there is not difference.

But for example if you want to make a business about "storage tanks" and you are looking for the domain storagetanks.com but it's taken, you can try storagetanks.org

If your competitor is the one using storagetanks.com you might want to change the domain name to avoid confusion or problems. Trying to confuse clients with similar domain names is generally not a good practice.

If the .com and you with your .net did the exact same SEO wise he would win.
But if you did even a smidgen better, you'd win.

It is more about you and not so much about the domain. That being said, if you were trying to sell a link or plug on your site, having .com is going to command a higher price.

I think everybody should try and snag a dotcom domain before moving onto the lesser known ones. As far as order I think it goes dotcom, dotnet, dotorg, dotbiz, and then the rest after that are a bit of a wash in terms of ranking potential and perceived legitimacy.

getting a .com used to be very important for both seo as well as customer recognition. but that was like 10 years ago,

nowadays any domain extension works the same for SEO. although the .com and .net will always be better for customer recognition.

If you are selling something yes, .com is a more honest representation of your website. Also helps Googles knowledgeable determine that you odder products and boosts the value of reviews. A little known aspect of Googles "brain". .net is good for information sites

The .com commands more recognition, no doubt. But .net and .org will perform just as well if properly marketed. If the .com you wanted has been snagged by domain resellers, I would purchase the .net, get it profitable, then purchase the .com when I had funds to do so, in order to solidify my brand.

As long as you provide good content people don't really care about the extension. The only thing is for regular people, who aren't online all that much, the ''.com'' is more memorable.

Originally, it was suggested that .COM be used primarily for commercial businesses, .NET for network related organizations and .ORG for nonprofit groups. This quickly became unworkable and consequently, in the case of .COM, .NET and .ORG, a decision was made to rely on registrants to choose the TLD (Top Level Domain) they wish. In fact, many registrants (domain owners) order their domain name as .COM, .NET and .ORG.

Not mush in terms of traffic. But COMs have some advantage.
