The Sneaky Kentucky Leap-Frog Technique

The Sneaky Kentucky Leap-Frog Technique...

After I made a comment about a few of my articles on EzineArticles.com being at the top of Google, I got the following private message from Justin (threatlevelorange):

I am wondering how you get an ezinearticle to the top of google search results. I noticed in a thread you alluded to have a couple. Can you fill me in on the secret?
Just to be clear...(if you're already up to speed on why you want to do this, skip this part. Though I gotta tell ya, you probably want to read it anyway to find out who "Pookie Bear" is...)
For competitive keyword phrases having a high PageRank page on a HUGE authority site is a must.

Problem is, most of us don't have a huge authority site.

Chris Knight (or as I call him "Pookie Bear") is nice enough to let us use his huge authority site for free. He's cool like that.

So, by using Chris' site, we can get one of our articles--expertly written to seduce readers to visit our site and throw all their cash at us--to the top of Google.

How powerful is that? Well, for my best performing articles, I get a 10% click-thru rate (out of 100 readers, 10 click through to my site and check me out) and those visitors buy at an astounding 14.8%. Not too shabby for free traffic.
Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program...

First, I write an article focused on a keyword phrase I want to target on Google. Typically I pick a keyword phrase related to a product or service I already offer where the competing sites at the top of Google are PageRank 4 and below.

Next, I submit it to EzineArticles.com.

Then, instead of getting lots of incoming links to my own site, I get them to that particular article page at EzineArticles.com, using the keyword phrase I am targeting in my own link's anchor texts (that's the blue underlined part of the link.) I use my own sites, social media sites, friends' sites and my special outer space listening satellite to gain these incoming links.

Pretty soon a couple things happen...

Google notices the article and begins moving it up its listing based on those incoming links.

I start getting highly converting traffic to whatever pages on MY site I have targeted with the links in the article.

Over the long haul it works surprisingly well.

Thanks, Kevin. However, let me follow up with this question...

Your EZA article has to attract 1,000 readers to get 100 people to your site and from that you'll gain 14 sales.

What number of sales would you expect if you drove 1,000 people DIRECTLY to your offer, rather than relying on them to have to make two clicks instead of one to get to your site?

He has more chance of ranking the ezine over his site, so it's really a no brainer in the case of ranking the article over the site (especially if a new domain)

I don't believe that's always necessarily the case. In fact, I know that it isn't always true.

Some marketers believe that because the EZA site carries weight, it is easier to get an article at EZA ranked higher than a new site optimized for the same keyword phrase.

Personally, I carefully choose what I plan to rank for and decide that I can rank my own site -- not a site controlled by someone else -- before I even approach a niche or market.

That's not to say that another approach isn't legitimate, but over my many years I've found that I'd rather send traffic to my OWN site directly than to another owner's site where I have to rely on an eroded number of visitors to click through to my own site.

Cool, I have not done any article writing to ezines or go articles yet, I need to do that, I have tons of blog posts I could just re-write. How long does it take to get an ezine article ranked for a moderately competitive keyword.

      Thanks for the comment Steven.

I would MUCH RATHER have my own site ranked 1st for a specific keyword phrase, but in some cases it is much easier to do that using EZA.

When you place your article at EZA it gets tons of incoming links from other EZA internal pages. These are links that would not be available simply by placing the article on your own site.

Also (though there is some debate here) EZA pages are probably given more weight than pages on smaller, newer sites by Google.

I was thinking 1% clicks through to the vendor and from there you get around 5%. I think I had the numbers crunched to approximately 12 cents per impression.

Do you get more than 100,000 impressions from a great highly ranked article?
      Hi Justin,

I haven't had 100K impressions from any one article at EZA, but I have solid numbers from several that are much higher than the numbers you quote.

To a certain extent I agree, but I also have a number of keyword phrases where my site ranks 1st or 2nd and my EZA article with the same content (or content pointing to the #1 page on my site) is in the spot just after or before meaning the 1st several spots are all either on my site or about my site.

      And about EZA...

So far in my dealings with EzineArticles.com (and I was one of the first customers Chris got after he bought it) they have always been fair. I have no reason to believe that will change in the near future. If it does, then I guess I would have to evaluate whether or not it was worth staying a part.

      Thanks for the comment Kappa.

I have had an EZA page ranked #1 in as little as 24 hours, but that was several years ago and EZA was reviewing articles much more quickly. You can certainly use a number of techniques to get your own page or pages on EZA ranked within a few days to a week.
