Travel full time and write it all off with a blog?

I am thinking of traveling the world full time and also like taking random pictures..

Could I set up a simple wordpress picture blog site, put some affiliate links or adsense on the side and then effectively write off all my travel expenses?

I was thinking to set up my main business and this together to make this happen?

=

I know to talk with a trained professional but wanted to get some initial thoughts on all this first?

Yes you could. You will have a hard time to find a good quality internet connection sometimes though.

However, it can be done if you do it correctly.

A really good program on blogging is called: How to start a blog that matters

    I highly recommend it,

Examples of people doing similar that what you want to do:

    - Shannon from Where is Shannon. She travels around the world and reports her trips. She earn money with a variety of products, however the one giving more money is Amazon Affiliates promoting products to travel with kids. She generates more than $6,000 per month.

    - Michelle from Making Sense of Cents. She is blogging from a RV travelling around US and making $30,000 per month.

So, the answer to your question is.... Yes!! It is possible, it's not easy but with determination you can =)

For more similar examples you can visit this bloggler list and how much they make. The list contains almost 50 bloggers making living out of affiliates.

    I hope it helps.

Yes, but you need a lot of work and a strategy. Take advantage of your journey by reaching out with social networking. A lot of people travel and blog so that in itself is not an angle.

Ideally you would like your idea to go viral so the world is watching your blog.

For example, Jordan Axani's story went viral when his girlfriend broke up with him after he booked tickets. He sent out a search for a girl with the same name who could use his ex's tickets. He found her and they went around the world together.

They have since had movie offers for their story.

There are thousands of travel bloggers so you need to find your USP and an angle into the market. Social media is probably the best way to engage and drive traffic to your blog.

As long as you know that this is the ultimate answer, here are some additional thoughts.

    > In order for this to work, your traveling would have to tie in somehow with your main business. Otherwise, the IRS may classify your travel blog as a hobby business. If so, you would only be able to write off the travel expenses against income earned from the travel blog.

    > In order to continue deducting business expenses, you have to demonstrate a profit from the travel business in (I think) three out of five years. Failing that, you have to able to prove that you were legitimately trying to make a profit from the travel business. Posting a few random photos likely won't pass the test. Failing puts your travel business back in the 'hobby' realm where you can only deduct expenses against the income from the travel blog.

    > The worst case scenario is that you trigger an audit. This is not fun, especially if the auditor gets even a whiff of tax evasion or fraud. Your business (both of them) could vanish overnight.

My first foray into MLM ended this way. I was already buying VHS tapes on fishing and reselling them online. I wanted to supplement that by selling the fishing tackle to go with the tapes. I found a company that not only sold tackle to resellers at wholesale, it had a pay plan for recruiting additional resellers. I bit, and sent in my initial tackle order.

It never came. I went to the company website. It was gone. I called the phone number. Not in service. I sent a letter. Came back as 'no such party at this address'. I finally got hold of my sponsor, who had some of the details because he was also a supplier to the MLM company. The IRS shut them down for failure to pay taxes. Thankfully, I only lost a couple of hundred dollars on my trial order. My sponsor had several thousand dollars worth of merchandise confiscated and payments frozen.

My best advice? Follow the idea above and spend a little cash on some professional advice. That is a legitimate deduction, too.

Its a tough cookie to crack. Like others have said you need to Plan this out very carefully. And start building a Following and some Traffic before you actual book the flights

OP, you seem to be under the wrong impression that you can make deductions against your total income based on having a travel blog. That's not the way it works. You will only be able to take deductions against the profit of your travel-related business specifically (and of course only expenses that are directly related to the travel blog - not all expenses incurred while traveling). You cannot use your travel expenses to take deductions on your main business income if the expenses are not directly related to your main business.

So you should be ready to pay in full for your travel expenses yourself before you do this. If you spend thousands on travel and make $100 profit from your travel blog, you are still going to be paying those thousands regardless of your total income.

You should definitely talk to a tax professional and have them educate you on how legitimate business deductions work. If you decide to go ahead with this, you should assume you will be paying your own expenses in full until you actually have a steady history of income from your blog to base possible deduction assumptions on.
