Why is it important to get backlinks indexed?

Hi, this might be a stupid question, but why is it that it's important to get your backlinks indexed. Is it because it won't count as "link profile" until its indexed, or?

Hope someone can answer on this, tried googling it too, without luck.

Getting a back link indexed means that the Google bot has read the page your link is on.
Unless Google knows you back link is there, it won't count for anything.
Some blog comments are placed on pages made years and years ago. May be a while before the Google bot visits, and until it does, your link is meaningless.

  I think it's more important that your backlink generates traffic and conversions. Even a well placed nofollow link can do that.

  As far I know, effective back links plays an important role to increase traffic, more traffic means more promotion of your site

If they are not indexed then Google will not know about them. You could have a million back-links to your website,if they are not indexed by google then they count as nil.
