Some help with Screen Recording.

Hello guys,
this is a slightly random question but kinda indirectly related to internet marketing -
I'm creating some tutorial videos in the music niche and using a screen recorder but I also want to record my voice at the same time - now selecting 'record system sound' and 'mic' from my laptop doesn't work to well. Would be fine if audio quality wasn't an issue but I'm seeking a good clean sound.
what are people using to do this? an external audio interface with a mic and speakers plugged in perhaps?
my other issue is that recording straight from my laptop system sound actually records a broken speaker on it haha so it just makes a farting noise! Does anyone have experience with recording on external sound cards / interfaces?

any ideas?

I use Apowersoft screen recorder which is sweet when I just want to do screen captures but talking into my laptops mic port and recording system sound just isn't the one because of the niche I need high quality audio.

    Recording the sound of the broken speaker? Sound like you are using a speaker, not headphone, right?

    If that is the case, the sound produced from speaker will be directly recorded by the mic..

    Get a cheap headset/mic or a solid state micro voice recorder (that's what I use; it has a great mic for such a cheap l'il thing and I dump the audio out with usb)...

    ...'course, if you have a smartphone you could always use the mic on that and download the audio.

    What I do when I'm recording games is toggle the voice recording key for the software for the first few seconds. Later, when I'm in the video editor, all I have to do is line up the start of the separate audio with the bit the software recorded. It's easy.

      Hi Midge,

      You are right laptops are rubbish for recording audio. Even with a quality mic. The sound card in the laptop is probably not that great.

      Some desktops have much better sound cards so don't always have the same issues.

      I use a laptop all the time and record screen videos and my own audio all the time.

      Used to use a fairly good quality headset which was OK. But it can be cumbersome and the laptop soundcard still lets it down.

      My best solution was to buy a cheap audio mixer (pre-amp). I got a small one from Amazon for about $40. It's a Berhinger xenyx 302 usb.

      The key point there is the USB. That then bypasses the laptop soundcard.

      I originally used a Lavalier lapel mic but when that broke I actually bought some cheap lapel mics from eBay and they work perfectly.

      And I always have earphones plugged in to the speaker socket to make sure that does not get picked up by the mic.

    Take a look at OBS (Open Broadcasting Software), it is free and open source. Gamers mainly use it to record their gameplay, but it has now surpasssed many other paid programs. You can record your screen in high quality HD, record your voice at the same time, and add your Webcam for picture in picture videos. I use this to record my screen action for its high quality recording abilities and other features. I also use other software to edit effects and transitions, you cant do this to much extent in OBS, although the recently released OBS Studio (still free) has some added transition and editing features which I have yet to explore.

    I use OBS, pretty simple to use and awesome. Is being updated from time to time, I use Adobe Premiere for editing and Hanbrake to compress the video.

    A headset microphone for gaming should do just fine. Search Amazon and pick one that has good reviews. Please note that the sound card in your computer has a lot to do with the quality of your sound recordings. You may want to upgrade your sound card if it's too cheap or a bit dated.

      Yes cool. The USB Microphone is a microphone with an interface so that you can plug it directly into your USB port. You bypass your computer’s sound card for recording.

      For about £50 in UK Amazon it is the best for cardiod voiceover recording in the price range. I have a Blue Yeti, but I prefer this one for voice-overs. It picks up nearly nothing but your voice. You need to be up close and personal though..smiles
