A question to Older Warriors..Are you Here?

Hello fellow Older Warriors.. Are you Here?

I have been doing this since 1998. I have been with the Warriors since Allen Says started this wonderful forum, remember the banner ads, talking about a secret group, where you would discover the secrets of an Internet Marketing Warrior. Those ads were so fun, and intriguing. Allen sure knew how to attract People to his products. LOL

I have had some success in selling different things, nothing to brag about, but I know it works. I did have momentum early on with building my mailing list, of course then we had newsletters, and I still think that is a great idea. Then all the technical stuff came along such auto responders, double opt in and other things, that I kind of deflated. I am still hanging in there though. I am still trying to learn and do. Are there Older Warriors here who have been around perhaps as long as I have here? What are your challenges or do you have any?

I just thought It would be nice to hear from some of you shall we say more mature Warriors... LOL

Hi Gabby, I considered myself pretty old here (5 years) before I read this post.
I'd also love to know how many of the old warriors are still here.

WOW! Debbie you're doing internet marketing since 1998, I think you have gained enough experience to share with the rest of us especially the newbies

Thanks so much for your vote of confidence!... Yes umm, I have learned a few things, to be sure. At one time my Flagship website had a ranking of 6, and I learned that no matter what new gizmos came along that would give you more of a presence on Google, like you know, page 1 or 2 for your keywords? Well I didn't do all that stuff, I just had great content.

Perhaps this will get a discussion going. Oh I guess I should clarify that I mean older Warriors as in Warriors who have been here a long time, and Warriors who are just well Older. Some of the Warriors that sort of started when I did, are now off enjoying the fruits of their labors, perhaps on a tropical Island, or their Mountain Top retreat. LOL Those of us who are still hanging in there, I think might have some challenges such as maybe health issues, or perhaps attention spans that are shorter, or just feel like maybe the younger Warriors are passing us up!.. Which is probably more of a probability!..

Five years?... Why you are still a youngster?.. lol

    Hey Gabby, I'm slightly old

But you can hit me up on Skype and I can spare you a few minutes of my time each week to help you with the tech stuff. You don't have to pay a dime, just for 'old time's' sake

      Hi Louis,
Thanks so much for your kind offer. I do use Aweber. I have come aways from when I first started having to learn all the new stuff put in our way. Now I am trying to understand the way solo ads are done now. Umm, all we did was just find other internet marketers who sold solo ads, and then paid them to run an ad, not hard. Now there seems to be a whole new way of doing this.

Is it because now we have auto responders that everyone has several lists, because of starting a sales funnel for one product, and so a list starts, for that product?.. This would mean I guess that the Internet Marketer would sell a solo ad depending on the list, Right?.. And then charge different prices? I think one newsletter would make things a whole lot simpler. I still have one but trying to build it up again, but it has been around since 486 computers. LOL

I've been here for 6 years. I was still a high school student back then. lol Made lots of amazing connections here. I love this forum.

As for tech stuff like the one's you've mentioned it does sound hard but most of the time, it's not. You'll get better as you keep implementing. Autoresponders are just a one-time set up. You only tinker with it again when you do some testing. If you think things are a bit too tough, you can always hire an assistant. ;-)

As for challenges, consistent traffic and lead flow was my biggest challenge.

      Ok, I'm old.

I took a lot of what I learned in the early days and ran with it, and was very successful. I am currently reinventing myself, so I am back here learning again as I got a little complacent.

Challenge? Same old thing, distinguishing truth from B.S., and trying to not get distracted by the shiny things that have nothing to do with my goals.

        I hear ya Keith,

I think you and I are in the same boat, so to speak. You said you were successful, so did all the new stuff sort of throw you, or you were making money and perhaps didn't keep up with new things. I, like you am trying to reinvent myself.

The reality is that most veteran members have left because of the degrading state of the forum. Just look around: half of the posts are written by semi-illiterate people.

It's such a shame this happened, but hey, everything has an end, right?

You know, I have noticed lots of changes also. In just what, 9 or 10 years, that everything has changed so much? I have to admit, I miss Allen Says being around and his input. When he started the War Room, it was exciting, because those of us who joined the War Room, were going to have direct access to his Marketing Genius, and we did. <sigh>

But first, a quick trip down memory lane. Down FidoNet. Archie, Veroncia and 9600 baud. And who could forget the revolutionary 3.5" floppy disc.

That would be circa 1985, and we were a leading seller of both Apple computers (IIe, IIc and the new MAC) and "clones"; those IBM licensed knock-offs.

Me and a fellow salesman were selling computer pieces and parts online, on green screens with text.

It was all geeks, and commerce of anything other than computer related was verboten. Then, in 1994, a local computer company set up one of the first "forums", a company also involved in one of the first "libel" lawsuits.

In 96-97 we got RoadRunner cable from Time Warner, and BOOM, off to the races.

I have recently recovered data from a couple of old hard drives. On these were archives from some of the forums from 1997 to 2001, including
the Tony Blake forum, Friends In Business, Dave Bancroft forum, Bill Myers web site and private members site, known as the Idea Bank and the early days of Allen's forum.

So, yea, there are a few of us 'oldtimers' left. (We prefer geezers).

    Now about your situation.

Yes, there is new technology. And new IM, a great advance in TRACKING and monitoring sites, eye tracking technology, all the best practices...so there is or could be a lot to learn.

    BUT,

Consider Jinny Beyer, whom I first wrote about in 1997, in the original version of Before You Buy Anything, who has a "low tech-high touch" business, quilts.

Patterns have been a mainstay of her business.

So, I would encourage you to look around and write down what you've been doing the last decade, the good and the bad...what interests have you maintained?

    What do you enjoy?

Or, as I've been known to ask, What do you want?

Simple question often tough to answer. The well thought out and considered answer contains the seed of your NEXT.

We still eat today, we still need safe drinking water (think Flint, MI), businesses still need customers.

We need clothing, and social activity.

There is far more OPPORTUNITY for you today than there was when this forum began. The entry costs for IM are almost nonexistent.

DON'T LET THE SHINY NEW techno stuff and latest and greatest software be a deterrent to you.

I remember talking to a guy (Corey Rudl) about how much the Internet was ripe and ready for those with selling, Remote Direct Marketing or Mailorder or Direct Response experience. He bought a course I was offering on the subject.

Over the next few years, he got 5 times more money out of me for his products than what he paid for mine, and it was worth every penny, he was a true pioneer. But the principles of selling haven't changed much.

So, I'll end with a simple question,

    gabbydeb, WHAT do you want?

Thanks so much for your reply. I remember the Tony Blake forum. I remembered one time I posted there, and was in error about the placement of my website on the search engine, and why it was on the first page, and oh Boy, you would have thought I had committed the unforgivable sin. lol That's when I found the Warrior's Forum with Allen Says, and I have been a member since about 1997 or 98. Cory Rudl was indeed the Man back then, in internet marketing, and it was a great loss, when he died.

It has been a twisty turney road for me, but I'm still here and still plugging away. What you said about the principals of selling hasn't changed much. Direct Response Marketing is still the backbone for selling on the internet, just like it was and is, in Mailorder.

      Who are you calling mature???

Registered my first domain in 1997, built the first site on that domain using Notepad and MS Paint. Ran my newsletters using mailing list software before "autoresponder" was even a thing.

Like Keith, I'm in the process of reinventing my business. When I got started, I thought I'd be happy running it forever. Fast forward a couple of decades, and the thought of staying on the treadmill for another couple of decades isn't nearly as appealing.

      Challenges?

Getting a booster for the Shiny Object Syndrome vaccine. That's the big one. The rise of social media presents a lot of intriguing opportunities, although my research says I'm late for the big party.

The other is confidence. I did it once. Can I do it again, with new products, technologies, etc.? I believe I can, but sometimes that little voice manages to make itself heard.

I know I have had a few health challenges like the past few years with horrible hips plagued by early OA.

But I keep getting out of bed. It's just a constant limp now. It's weird I see people twice my age and weight walking around just fine..Never thought at this age it would come to this.

My family and friends are amazed because my limp is so dramatic ,but yet Iam still able to do spin and free weights 4 times a week. I just take the pain and push thru

          Hi Discrat,

I hear ya on the health issues. This has been a stumbling block for me also. Mine has been brain drains, and needing energizer bunny batteries, for humans. lol Internet Marketing has been good, because it keeps one thinking and doing. All this new stuff keeps coming along like the social marketing stuff, and making sales videos, we think this is something new we have to learn, well I am thinking that if we just keep to the basics of direct response marketing, like others have said, and have good sales copy and a good product, we will sell products.

          Same here. Small world.

The forum says I signed up for WF in '04. Not sure that's right; that date might have been imported from an older version of the forum database.

Anyway, it's been a long time either way: I started doing business online in '96 and "left the rat race for cyberspace" and went full time at it in '98.

LOL!... yes it is. You are so right, the basic principals stay the same. I am afraid I got sidetracked by the whole techie thing, and a bit confused by the whole Social Marketing scene, but I am getting back to basics. Perhaps we "Older" Warriors should get together here more, and maybe show the younger ones how it's done! LOL

Like the majority of "older" Warriors. We all really got our first big break with the knowledge we received at Allen's "Internet Marketing Warrior's Secret Site". I for one am very grateful for the help Allen gave me in promoting my product in those first days. He knew I was passionate about my product and he swapped some of his content for mine and that was really my first real major success online. He even gave me a copy of the software he used for the membership area as well as the special affiliate code software. I had been tinkering beforehand. Anyone remember my products 'The Complete Internet Marketing Portfolio' or 'The Ultimate Home and Internet Publishing Portfolio' (link: http://www.eurekas.plus.com/internet...0Portfolio.PDF ). People are still selling them they are 15+ years old!

The Internet Marketing Warrior's Secret Site was a collection of content that formerly was part of a 10x 3.5" floppy disc set that was sent by post from Jeremy Martinez. Allen had the great idea of turning that content into a membership website. This was before the days of PayPal and aMember and AWeber. Membership details were sent out manually. People's credit cards were processed manually. Emails were sent using BCC. But, Allen was passionate about his site. He created the first forum within the members area. Then moved it to another site before forming what we see today as Warrior Forum. He did many joint ventures with other Warriors including Host4profit .

The Warrior's Secret Site was a collection of content that formerly was part of a 10x 3.5" floppy disc set that was sent by post. Lots of marketers made their fortunes based upon the knowledge shared in those first days.

Yes we have come a long way!... in terms of the ways we would get our offer in front of People. I remember when I first started seeing the word Spam, I though they were talking about the stuff in the can. LOL Many of us were spamming then, and didn't even know what that was.

          Hi Gordon.

Thanks for confirming that it's you. Great to hear from you.

I wrote an article years ago about leaving the rat race for cyberspace. I probably got the article's title idea from Ben Suarez' ads for his book, 7 Steps to Freedom. Here's a link to an ad of his: American Rat Race Ad by Ben Suarez » Swipe File Archive » Marketing & Copywriting Examples

Thanks again for the copy you sent way back when, BTW.

I just Googled it and found that the article is still on a number of web sites, like this one: 7 Keys That Helped Me Leave the "Rat Race" for Cyberspace

Looking back on the article now, the tips in it are still valid today, but I shouldn't have included that (or any) email address in the article's resource box: It's long defunct because of getting way too much spam

Jill, so did I. My topic was Internet Marketing and my objective was to discuss with other Warriors who have been here awhile, the challenges of internet marketing such as keeping up with all things new, and how things have moved or not for those of us, who have been here for awhile, and not only that but to talk about the challenges of being an older Warrior, who has been at this for a long time, and the challenges that one might find in growing older, and still hanging in there with their internet marketing efforts. I didn't feel this was off topic, but apparently the moderators disagreed. Perhaps this is what comes with getting older, that I couldn't even post this in the right forum.

So you were able to gain a lot of great knowledge even if your were lurking. That has been the beauty of this forum. Some of the other forums I belonged to, before the Warrior Forum, well let's weren't so forgiving. LOL

I don't know if I would consider my "old" LOL. I just turned 41. I started online back in 2005, so I guess in the whole scheme of things I haven't been doing it that long.

I remember how different it was back then, though. It seemed like it was SO much easier. You could still game Google rankings back then, or actually you didn't even have to because all you needed to do was publish a Squidoo lens and get some backlinks and it would shoot to the top of page 1.

You could still direct link from Adwords to Clickbank sales pages, one page websites, etc. Oh, the good old days... You could buy a domain, redirect it to a Clickbank sales page and publish a bunch of 300 word crappy articles in dozens of directories and make over $100 a day easily.

You could ad swap the crap out of your list, use misleading headlines, email your list 10 times a day and still never lose your autoresponder account. Oh, the good old days...

Well IMO, I'm kind of glad the "good old days" are over!

Yes indeed, one could game the search engines then, although I didn't see anything wrong with paying for an ad on google, and having it link to a Clickbank product. One is paying for an ad, and selling a product from that ad. Now as far as keyword loading a page, and it not having much substance, that was a practice that has thankfully went by the wayside. At one time when Page rank was all important, my page rank was 6, and I did it with content that was valuable to my visitors. I didn't use any tricks.

I have to admit my internet marketing road trip has been one of sharp curves and moutains, valleys, starts and stops, and right now I am starting over in a lot of ways. This is why I was very interested in what others have done along the way, and how many who have been around for awhile are still here, and have not given up. Many of us, are also older, as in age, and sometimes that can have an impact on what we do.

Yep...started in 1997...in the middle of university. This account doesn't reflect that because i was very inconsistent back then; i forgot my account details and just set up a new one...anyway...

Here's how old: my first affiliate sale was for an ebook that Cory Rudl was selling through his company IMC. I saw him on television and jumped online right away.

I started affiliate marketing and really made good coin for a long time, but i never took it seriously as my job was, well...my job right?

I blew my money as i went because it was just a game to me then.

I suddenly became ill about 5 years ago and really had no internet no media...nothing.

It blows my mind how much i had to relearn but thankfully the fundamentals are evergreen.

Anyway I reinventing my business for my sole source of income but this time I have to REALLY bootstrap it.

    It's gonna be fun.

            Hi Platinum Matt,

Actually I like to use the term Older, lol, and you know even when one is older, the desire to be successful at something, and to create, is still there. I am still plugging away at my internet marketing. You know I see People who are older than me, who are still achieving. I mean Donald Trump is 69 years old, and he is running for President!.. so I think if others are still out there and doing their thing, so can I!.. That is the way I choose to think about my being an internet entrepreneur!

Should've called this thread Old Warrior's reminisce, lol! Been a Warrior since the day's of spam.
Need to thank so many people for the life I got out of this site. I check in and read once in awhile rarely post, haven't had the time really.
Me and few other people back in the day came up with the idea to pool our resources and hire a programmer for a ground breaking E-com software. It was a blast, but it never came to completion as a group . So I took the code we had and hired another programmer to get it working and about a year and a half later sold the whole set up for a nice profit.

Then one day I read an ebook about being a super affiliate, well if having a network of over 200 website's is super I guess I was one of them, too. It was like an octupus back then it sucked the life right out of you, spent 20 hours a day for the easy pay days. Finally when my blood clots got so bad I gave up the super stuff. Kind of got away from it about the 6 or 7 years, was in the landlord business, recently sold all the property in a package deal and did some traveling, took up golf again and basically I was bored to death.

Well in the last 6 months I've been helping out some local business friends upgrade there web presence, I think it's so much easier now. Wordpress and the automation make it so much faster.

It's something to reminisce, this place is like a teenager now a day's the peep's have more time than we had.

Gabby I remember you and quite a few other's, I'm working on something local and the market's there everyone you know with a business could use your skill's, so get out there.

Allen Say's would hopefully agree with that.

PM me I'm full of idea's, but the old clock is getting up to the top.

I started it because I thought it would be great to hear from People, who had started out about the same time as me, and to hear what you all are doing, in internet marketing or not. What you have learned. I was feeling kind of left behind, which I have been, sorta! lol I started out with Amazing earlier Warriors, and yes I think Allan Says would say exactly that!

      Hi Hodge,

Your experience sounds very close to mine, except I wasn't as successful as you, in internet marketing efforts. lol So how long have you been at it this time?... I also have to use everything I have learned, which thankfully like you said the fundamentals are evergreen.

I started affiliate marketing and really made good coin for a long time, but i never took it seriously as my job was, well...my job right?

I blew my money as i went because it was just a game to me then.

It blows my mind how much i had to relearn but thankfully the fundamentals are evergreen.

Anyway I reinventing my business for my sole source of income but this time I have to REALLY bootstrap it.

i have learned and forgotten then learned more...a viscious cycle some would say ...haha

i haven't *officially* started again yet...I'm just networking and catching up my knowledge from my smartphone...

when i said i lost everything, i mean literally. i had to build from scratch which includes a hand me down laptop i should be getting by month's end.

Edit: got laptop this morning! sweet! after i clean it up, it will be time to unleash my torrent of knowledge back to the good folks of WF and the internet in general.

        then the show begins

besides luck and a serious knack for the tech side of things, success is all in the positioning and an unwillingness to quit imho.

anyway, I'm laying the foundation and will go from there.

        take care,

Hi Gabby I haven't been around as long as some of the others. Since about 2005/06 from memory. The WF has changed in both positive and negative ways I think. I don't sell ebooks, coaching programs, MMO products or do any traditional type of affiliate marketing or anything like that and instead focus on content and new technology so the challenges I face are a bit different to others. When I work on traffic for my content sites the best method I have found is the simplest and that is to pay for it. Think about it like this your product is essentially your content and your traffic and your customer is your content consumer but also your advertiser. If you can create great content and pay for high levels of high quality traffic which you can turn into constantly reoccurring traffic then you have ticked both boxes and the advertisers will roll right in. Where you get that traffic from, how much you spend, what methods you use is another topic altogether.

If I can give you one tip it would be to look into things such as 3D printing which in my opinion is a huge new industry which we have barely scratched the surface of and there are a lot of opportunities there. And I'm also a fan of crypto and decentralising technologies because I think they offer a world of new opportunities for people all over the world and at all levels of startup costs and know how. There is a link in my sig for one emerging technology in this field that I personally think will have a very big disruptive effect and for the guy on the ground floor there are plenty of opportunities in the way of core development, app development, farming and general investment and trading opportunities.

      Hi goingdeep,
Thank you for your reply to my post. It sounds like you have taken a very interesting path, to make money on the internet. I am in agreement that paid for ads, is the fastest way to get the traffic one needs to a product or service.

I've been here for 11 years, mostly as a lurker but planning to rev things up soon. I'm probably one of the older Warriors here in terms of age (I'm 61) but have had a very successful 40 year marketing career winning numerous million dollar sales awards. I made a post on the old archived Sow Pub forum about a lot of things that I've dabbled in through the years. I remember the early internet days when bulletin boards were the hot moneymaking thing.

Here is a post I made here about three years ago in a response to someone mentioning Don Lapre...

Actually, Don's "Tiny Classified Ads" was a knock-off of M.O.R.E.'s "Dialing for Dollars" program by T. J. and Eileen Rohleder. And they copied it from a a guy in Toronto, Canada named George ???. He was the originator, I believe, of the program. His original idea was selling job info through newspaper classified ads and people calling his answering machine for more info... the "jobs" classification is the largest and most read in the classifieds. Some of his titles included how to get jobs on cruise ships, airlines, Federal Government, etc.George eventually graduated to running 30 second TV ads during Sunday afternoon movies.

And I remember when Mike Filsame was a green newbie. Here is a freebie I found with Mike telling his life story .... very interesting reading.... http://millionairemarketingbootcamp....e-Filsaime.pdf

And here is an oldie but goodie video interview with the mailorder king himself ... Joe Karbo ...
    Enjoy,

Thanks so much for your post. I am in the same age group as you. I remember the great Joe Karbo. His signature book, "The Lazy Man's Way To Riches" came out when I was in High School. What a great video. Tiny Classified Ads and Dialing for Dollars were great successes, and it goes to show that there in nothing new under the Sun. Mailorder Marketing was a natural for the internet, but the same principals applied. A couple of things my Hubby and I first offered for sale, on the internet were carousel music boxes, and brooms. lol We actually got interest in the brooms.

I still have my copy of "The Lazy Man's Way To Riches" somewhere around here...Anyways, first sold products online in 1994 through AOL classifieds as I recall, then a full website in 1996 (which I still run today) as a secondary source of income from my retail store. Made many of dollars through the years online. Now semi retired and switching gears to info marketing. Selling online is so much fun and challenging. YES!!!

Yep, cut my online teeth offering info on AOL and CompuServe message boards - seems like that was the original "content marketing". Later tried classifieds.

I wish all the folks whining about PayPal and Clickbank had to try waiting for checks to clear, money orders in the mail, etc. before mailing floppy disks (the hard case on the 3.5" diskette was a godsend).

            Hi John,
I remember those days also. I came online a little bit after compuserve, but I remember everyone talking about it. I got into Paypal when it was, oh shoot, brain freeze, happens a lo these days. lol Anyway I got in before it was paypal, when they were paying everyone 200.00 to just sign up, well I didn't need a second invitation. After it was Paypal they were paying everyone 5.00 to just sign up! and if People signed through your banner link, you got 5.00.

Paypal saw a big opportunity for online business, and knew People were going to need to collect payment from all the stuff they were going to be selling online. It was so cool, to just put a Paypal button on one's site, and then just let them handle one's credit card payments.

I joined in '99 and received Allen's emails right to the end. Yeah, Allen Says. Ha! I'd forgotten about that.

It's great to see you!... I have really enjoyed seeing how this thread took off! I didn't really know what to expect. I also have enjoyed seeing a lot of the old gang, and as always, they were contributing some great ideas.

I got off to a great start, but let a few things get in my way, stumbling blocks, so to speak, and I lost momentum, but I hang in there, and I am trying to rebuild.

I started marketing online in 1994-1995 just after a portion of the Internet was sold to MCI (MCI.net) which finally made commerce online "legal" - before that it was illegal (technically - commercial services ran tsince about 1991- like email servers etc but largely because they were a service to the government and educators) but real ecommerce was forbidden because the most of the backbone for the Internet was owned by Arpanet (look it up) i.e the Darpa, DoD i.e. the government.

Anywaz...as soon as that was finalized I setup a website (sales letter online lol) - html hand coded in a single text file - and set myself up in bizness. Sold a book (30 page report I photocopied) on how to identify and make money sell 'used and rare books'. In order for people to order they had to call me on the phone because there was no PayPal then... Haha ... I then took their cc info over the phone and ran it through my "mail order' merchant account.

It was crazy that people actually called me to order this book. I think it was so new that people just were thrilled to "order something over the interwebs" at the time.

It's ALWAYS a challenge to keep up with the latest shinny object but that is NOT how money is made.

The way to really make money online is through great offers that entice buyers and great copywriting... technology is secondary and even last in the pursuit of riches.

Actually over the years I hardly ever visited the forum. Just happened to stop by tonight - forgot why lol - Used to love Sow Pub as someone else mentioned. Tony Blake used to call me on Fridays and Marlon Sanders and I still talk... but many of the old timers have gone on to do other things I guess, like me.

Keep the faith baby... but focus on great offers and copywriting... of course you have to have good products!... but forget trying to keep up with the latest tech.

    Just my two cents...

Oh, this thread makes me go through my memories of the last 10 years. I've been a member of warriorforum since 2007 and started with internet marketing 2-3 years before that. What made me jump into online marketing? Well, somewhere in 2004 I read about Corey Rudl and his "Car Secrets Revealed". It was a story of a pioneer internet success back in the 90s. It made me realize the difference between marketing something offline and online. It was so inspiring to me that I really wanted to learn how to use tools on the net, I wanted to be able to use internet any way I wanted. I started to read anything I could about affiliate programs, about creating my own products. I was so enthusiastic. I participated in everything... Site Build It, Insiders Secrets To Marketing Your Business on the Internet, I applied for CJ, Sharesale, Linkshare, Amazon. I've used all CPA networks, I even joined Cafepress. Back in 2005 it was easy to make money with webhosting plans. I remeber putting a simple website with webhosting plans and doing AdWords - that was it! AdWords back then was nothing like today. You could use thousands of keywords to promote anything - no penalty. Quality guidelines of the landing page - nothing to worry about. Sending PPC visitors directly to Amazon allowed...Oh it was so fun. SEO? You could just create a domain with the right domain name, then create profiles with links and you're on the first page. Someone mentioned Squidoo...I created Squidoo lens back then named Travian Cheats. I was number 1 on Google 3 hours later, thousands of visitors pouring in and clicking on my affiliate offer for free movies. Promoting dating sites like Plenty of Fish was so easy...I better stop. It makes me cry thinking about how strict everything is today. It must be said though that today things are much better regulated and that makes it harder for manipulators to clutter internet with very bad stuff. Today internet is a better place when it comes to removing unfair practices. People used to put out thousands of pages of automatic robot made posts which were unreadable and of no use whatsoever, but were outranking really good content and making money just because they were there on the net in thousands. People used to be dragged on the page with nothing useful to read or see and almost forced to give money with endless popup windows. Was that something that makes sense in the long run?? No. Internet is different today, many things are much better today. Bad, manipulative practices are much better deterred and prevented. And don't ever think that those bad practices would always work for you, they would also work against you. Why? Because you build your income on something that is in constant danger and then one day you're left with nothing. Remember Google going after thin affiliate sites? Remember Facebook suddenly shutting down accounts with ads promoting get rich offers? Constant fear and danger of being shut down? There must be a better way! There still is lots of opportunities today. I'm making money today too. If you find a normal legit way of promoting stuff online that works - there's nothing better than that! It's a stable concept, it's not stressful, it's making money...Anyway thanks for this thread, it made me think about things I haven't thought about for a long time.

Thank you Andreis, for responding to my post, and offering insight on internet Marketing from the earlier 2000's to now. I agree with you. All the tricks that People used to game the search engines wasn't going to last. It just took Google time to catch up with the tricks. lol I didn't do any of these things, and still had a Google page rank of 6, for my flagship website, when page rank was super important.

I enjoyed your post Rose. I feel like I have a kindred spirit. lol The auto responder stuff threw me, for the longest time, and as I wear all the hats for my internet marketing efforts, I am the one that has to master it. Also the social stuff came along, and now that is a learning curve, also, but I wonder if one is good at the fundamentals of direct response marketing, do we really need to get all into the social stuff too? I do have a Facebook Fanpage, and so I have to incorporate that into my marketing strategy, I guess.

I think I will keep doing what I have always done, have a site with great content, a newsletter, and affiliate products, based on that niche content.

We were fortunate to get the benefit of the mentoring of the Great Direct Response/Internet Marketer Allen Says, who started the Warrior Forum, also that is when the future IM Gurus were here and building their businesses.

Well, I am still here but mainly active in the OT forum

When I first joined in 2002, I was onto e-commerce and had a shop with 4 employees. In 2007, I shifted completely to selling links and decided to wind up the shop. Those were my best days as an IMer. I was one of the largest private link sellers around. Then Google hit me hard in 2008 but I still lingered on with link sales until late 2013. That was when many sites with fake high PRs appeared on the market and Google decided not to update PR anymore. That was when my link sales completely collapsed.

Since then, I am completely in affiliate marketing but it has been very volatile. My Adwords account got suspended for promoting Clickbank products and I have had a tough time in creating new Adwords accounts. Right now, I am quite fed up but I won't leave IM because I need money coming in.

      Hi Derek,

You have had a long and interesting experience with Internet Marketing. I have mostly stuck with content websites, using Amazon affiliate ads and Google adsense, in the past. Great content along with ways to monetize your site, will keep you out of trouble with Google. You know what, Google isn't the only game in town either. I have seen that many People are doing well, without worrying about Google. Have you tried Facebook ads? Facebook helps you get a very targeted audience for your ad, and they make it easy, as I have seen their tools. I am just picking up steam again, after a lot of starts and stops, with my internet marketing, so I am still hanging in there, also.

        Hi Deb

I have tried Facebook Ads without any success, in fact without any conversions at all. That was even worse than PPV. One possible reason is that I don't know how Facebook works. In fact, I do not even have a Facebook page. I don't know anything about other social media either. Perhaps I am not adaptable or flexible enough for new technologies.

Right now, I am having to resort to very blackhat methods to get active Adwords accounts. But I have no confidence that they will last long because Google looks at the pattern of ads. I just hope to make as much as I can before this is closed to me altogether.

          Hi Derek,

If you have a facebook page, there are ads on the right hand side, and their based on things you have liked. Facebook starts getting an idea, about what you like and then they start serving the ads, on content you really like. So, you see those ads, and you think I really like that and click on it. I love sewing and crocheting, so I have seen many ads come up based on my interests, and have clicked them.

One of the strategies I have seen People use, is to do ads that point to their Facebook fan page, because I have clicked on these ads, and went to their page and joined their page, because I was very interested, in what their page is about, so their ads worked. Your fan page can be the start of a sales funnel, or your ad can direct People to a squeeze page. I think an ad to a free report, and then collect email addresses, would work well.

I joined Stack That Money recently and found very detailed information on Facebook advertising. If anything, it is so complicated that it has almost put me completely off. A lot seems to depend on the quality of the banners used.

There is also very detailed information on mobile traffic as well. This I might have a go but again it is very complicated.

You are in a better situation than I am at the moment. My business collapsed right after my Adwords account was suspended. I am having to look into other more risky paid traffic sources.

I actually dabbled a bit with Internet Marketing around 1998-2000 while I was in high school to earn some extra cash without getting a job. I made some websites dedicated to my favorite video games back them (mainly strategy guides.) SEO was real easy back then.. I just stuffed all of my pages with my game name, linked out to 20+ related game sites, then emailed those sites asking for a link back. Once I got a few links back, my sites started to rank in the search engines. Then I put some banner ads on them and got people to click on them.. only made like $7-8 a month until the ad companies went bankrupt around the dot com bust. I pretty much lied about my age to get accepted to their advertising programs but didn't have any problems getting paid.

I then went to college and pretty much forgot about IM until late 2014.

    Hi gabbydeb,

Well, I'm only 6 years old here so I guess that makes me a youngster here, but I will tell you my story anyway.

So yes, I'm still here, and around....

My journey started with stuff I bought from a person called Avril Harper, yep! She is alive and kicking at Business and Money Making Articles by Avril Harper

Then I went to SBI Site Sell where I made my first $ (or maybe before Avril Harper? I can't remember...). After monetizing my first site, I've sold it and then started new ventures.

It all started around 2007/8. Anyway, I'm here and in better shape than I ever was

You know The Warrior Forum was primitive, compared to today, but I liked the campy feel to it. It was COOL!

      Hi Sarevok,

Glad you found the Warrior Forum. I found it in the "old" days, when I was visiting another forum, that didn't take to newbies very well, as there wasn't much tolerance for internet marketing ignorance, but remember this was the early days, so who knew much of anything yet. LOL With the Warriors I found a home.

Wow!... Did this thread get lively or what?... I posted in the hope that perhaps a few of the Older Warriors that dropped would see it, and say hi and share maybe some older stuff from the "Olden" days and talk about how health might be a factor today, in their internet marketing efforts, or perhaps they are now retired from that, and out enjoying the good life. LOL I never expected the thread to just go wild!.. It was wonderful seeing all you guys.

So I was wondering if any of you would consider taking perhaps 15 minutes to talk and share your success, experiences, what lessons you learned along the way, and perhaps part with some gold nugget ideas that could get one excited, and their mind hopping, where they can hardly wait to finish reading, and get going! ... I know in this thread, there is wealth of information and ideas, so I thought you might like to have a little fun , and put your "Internet Marketing Warrior" Hats on again!

If so, how would you like to do this?... perhaps something where an affiliate product could result, of if you have a product, that you have an affiliate product program setup for, then maybe writing a page, that could be a chapter in an ebook, with your affiliate link? I have a couple of ideas that I was thinking of, but would rather speak privately with you who are interested. They may be good ideas, or maybe not. In fact, this whole suggestion might a good idea or maybe not. Anyway these were just some thoughts I had.. Sooo...

I feel that your intentions are pure. Unfortunately at some point in this forum it became somewhat of a set-up where people would do threads for the sake of getting some kind of product done (oh the shame! lol).

So I'll steer you away from that area.

I look at people who were here in 2002 and qualify them as the older seasoned warriors personally. Or anyone who was in here doing this before 2007 when I started doing something. If I'd known/realized sooner to look for this type of forum from the onset of starting my first business back in 2001 I certainly would have been here!

There is a different crowd in here now, and I've seen the progression in the short time I've been here.

LOL, so I'm thinking here what song might encapsulate my experience here. The one that comes to mind that needs to be completely rewritten to be a proper parody is "At the warrior, warrior forum" and instead of "don't fall in love" it would end along the lines of "don't go black hat"

        Hi Jill,

Oh the unforgettable Barry Manilow. Boy did he have a voice. lol Um,, so you are saying in the forum there are those, who have increasingly made suggestions about putting a product together with others, with the idea, to have someone else do it? I think I understood it right!... but being a bit dense, who knows!.. LOL

          Yes, along those lines.

So where are you now exactly Debbie? Do you have an idea of what you want to do or are you still looking to hone in on something to start fresh into?

Don't get caught up in worrying about any technical stuff.

There are so many "how to" videos on youtube these days that it's a snap to get the bulk done.

      Gabbydeb,

Good to have you back with us. My grandpa used to say: "The only thing older than me is dirt!"

Now I am a grandpa and understand what he meant. I followed Allen in the early 2000's and joined the old WF in 2005. Things were a lot simpler then, but to be honest, I wouldn't trade today's tools for what we had in those days.

This place is a lot different now given the new ownership. To me, the biggest difference is the ability to carry on meaningful discussions about Internet marketing.

The vast majority of threads are posted by new people coming to the forum trying to find their way. So we end up getting the same questions over and over again. We all have to start somewhere, I understand that and try to be as helpful as I can.

I really wish there was a database of some kind (not simply a search function) that had the answers to the most often asked questions so folks could quickly find good responses to basic questions.

But it won't happen. I've made suggestions before, good suggestions, and nothing has ever happened.

Oh well, it's not my forum.

      Looking forward to your contributions.

        Hi Steve,

I think the database would be a great idea. I don't know, the Warrior Forum seems to be a bit more corporate. Back in the day, how's that for sounding old, umm, One could just PM Allen Says or Paul Myers, and mention an Idea, but time marches on.

        Regards,
        Debbie

Yep, I agree. And there is Pros and Cons to that.

I remember when I joined back 8 years ago there was a bustling community of really successful Marketers like John Taylor, Paul Myers, Kevin Riley, Ex Rat , Willie Crawford etc..etc..who used to have in depth conversations about what they were doing to make extremely substantial incomes.

But now it is more Newbie oriented. Which is NOT necessarily a bad thing. Just different. Sometimes a little trying lol

I would lie if I did tell you I didn't miss some of those guys in the past and the discussions we had

There are People, who simply don't want to look things up. I think another factor is that they want the social interaction, of People telling them things, and talking back and forth. They have to realize, that they have to do a lot of stuff, on their own to learn what they need to do, and then when they have took the effort to do so, others are more willing to help.

I built my first website in the mid-90s but it was for a job, not for myself. I built a linux box out of spare parts, connected it to the internet, installed a web server and hand coded every html page and cgi script using vi. It was for a university department where I was a student so they didn't exactly throw cash around.

I built my first personal website in 2004 but it wasn't for making money, just a vanity site. This time around I used Bluehost, installed Wordpress and customized a few themes and plugins by writing a little php code. It was a fun way to keep connected with family before Facebook took off.

I built my first internet marketing site in 2014 so I'm only in my second year. I wanted my site to have quite a bit more functionality than a typical blog so I coded it from scratch in php rather than using Wordpress. The success of the site has left me constantly amazed. I probably owe at least some of that success to advice I've read here on WF.

I keep reading that this forum used to be better before I joined so I sure hope the decline is not my fault. Here is what I consider my most valuable contribution to the community:

From $2 to $1,500 per Month, My First Year as an Amazon Affiliate

I'm happy to report my site earns $2,000 per month now and I hope to pass $3,000 by the end of the year. Here's to continued growth!

      Hi Shellerik,

Wow you have sure have the technical down good. The early days of the forum were like this really campy group who all were just getting started, and it was an Idea goldmine, with some of us who had already been doing great off line with mail order, which is direct response selling, so they were a great fit for internet marketing, and there were those who had already gained some experience by selling on the early internet bulletin boards, like Compuserve. Of course we had the benefit, of the great Allen Says who actually started the Warrior Forum. So yeah, it was pretty cool!... but it looks like you are off to a good start with being an Amazon Affiliate, and then doing your own info product. 2,000 a month is nothing to laugh at. Congratulations!

      Regards,
      Debbie

Been here off and on since about 2001 or so. Took a long break and when I came back after a major forum update my old user ID was locked and mods then told me to just create a new ID instead. So had to start a new one.
I used to be a silent mod on FriendsInBusiness. I'm sure many have heard of that BBS. It had a bad reputation among marketers on forums like this as it was largely a scams site but mostly populated by no-doers. No offense toe MaaMaw, RIP, that that's really what it amounted to in large part. But it served it's purpose - to help people avoid IM scams.

You know its all mindset. You can have the best tools and products in what ever market your in but if you don't have the correct mindset you are not going to succeed. In anything.

Once I started to change my thinking and perspective then my results started to change and I started making more consistant money online.

I've been on here since the start - I came online in May of 1997... so as soon as Allen created the WF, I was in. (I think my date shows differently because for some reason when he moved it, my original account was lost lol.

I'm rarely in here anymore as I learned to really focus my time. While I recognize everyone has to start somewhere, over the years a lot of junk was happening and many of the posts became bashes and attacks, or people trying to gather to spam.

Spending tons of time on a forum didn't really get me to my goals unfortunately because of all the time NOT spent being productive, so while I still pop in here (obviously ) - I don't do it much anymore.

And if you're wondering where Paul Myers and Willie Crawford (and others) are, many of us are all over facebook instead. Both Paul and Willie have their own groups... so does E. Brian Rose, Bryan Zimmerman, Brian Johnson, Bill Hugall, and SO many others I could name.

      Hi Kevin,

Facebook has definitely made a dent in how we do internet marketing. I have noticed that the Fanpage has really evolved, in that it is really making it possible to sell right from that page. I hope that People don't rely completely on it though, because of course, we don't own our Fan pages.

    Hello...
I have been scrolling and reading the posts in here and I forgot to quote the one I wanted to respond to..

I enjoyed reading the sharing of other warriors and the OP and I felt I a connection. I may look young but for experiences in online marketing, I can say I am old. I think I tried a lot of money making ventures online. I burned a lot of money testing a lot of things.

And now, what is left for me as source for making money is adsense, affiliate marketing mostly with clickbank products, info product selling, and marketing CPA offers.

I feel I am back to square 1 particularly on how I generate traffic to create sales and that is:
    1. Forum marketing
    2. Affiliate marketing and making sales from Organic traffic.

No more Adwords, Facebook Ads, Media Buys and other paid ads.

Nothing wrong with 'streamlining' with your current Ad sources but after awhile you may reconsider implementing those other sources

True and I agree. However, pixelized and retargeting are already owned by those who stayed in their campaigns. I was thinking of going back to PPV but I am looking for a new wave of PPV users. It seems that previous viewers are already blind to ads that they see in their screens and they don't convert.

    Great post :-)
I consider myself very young, and there are tons of new things to learn in these days (I do business on the internet since 15+ years)

It is a great site, yes!... I have seen many come and go, since I have been doing this, and the Warrior Forum had that unique staying power. I think a lot of it had to with Allen /Says, the founder of this wonderful place for internet marketers.

      Regards,
      Debbie

I originally started under a different user name in about 2005.

I was 50 years old trying to learn about IM.
I was in the construction industry and even though the economy went south in around 2008, it hit the construction industry way before then and I was out of a job at 50.

Let me tell you, near impossible to get a good job at that age and I was a regional manager responsible for the territory from Boston MA south to Charlotte NC and the east coast.

One day I couldn't sign in here anymore, forgot my password or something so I just lurked for a couple years spending more time on webmasters world and wealthy affiliate.

Than I signed up again in 2009 but no time to really to hang around and post.
So much time can be wasted here when there is work to do.

A lot has changed except the questions asked by noobs; you must learn how to research is all I can say.

Now I'm 65, one more piece of software to launch that should put the frosting on the cake and I'll be saying adios amigos.

It was great to see you post. We are about in the same age group, so I know what it's like to be doing this at this age. It sounds though like your lurking has paid off, and you are up and running.

      Regards,
      Debbie
