3 Internet Marketing Myths that could ruin your business.

1. "Social media is the greatest kind marketing."

Social media is ideal for businesses. Nearly all of the major social media platforms are now publicly traded firms which need to generate profits for their stockholders, although it's a means to reach a large and engaged audience.
The organic range of the latest social media today is not high. If you wish to reach more individuals, advertisements that are paid are still a better way to accomplish this. Gone are the day of the complimentary ride on social media.

One form of marketing that hasn't changed, and will not, is email marketing. If a person is signed up to your email list, they can see your emails each time you send out them. Social media platforms belong to all those businesses. Doesn't mean they are part of your community, just because someone is connected to you. Email list and your site are your community. All these are also the areas where you can connect with the client close the sale--you can not do that on social media.

2. "Add anyone you have interacted with online to your email list."

There is a classic old school strategy that would be to add anyone you've interacted with through email or on LinkedIn to your own email list. That is HORRIBLE guidance along with a strategy you need to run as fast as possible away from
.
People are more comfortable buying from someone they know, enjoy and trust. If they get that e-mail from a list they did not sign up, they won't do any of those for. It's shady and chases business away and will most likely land you in the spam jar.

3. "Strive to reach those who are not interested."

There were lots of cold calls and door to door visits back in the day as a way to get new business. It could be the cold e-mail about getting your website visibility, or the man who is always posting in different Facebook groups.

The myth is you simply need to strive harder to reach those that haven't expressed any interest. It is a jump to consider someone will get interested from what you are doing and then spend money along with you. Remember, they must really get to know you first before they feel comfortable spending money. Stop wasting your time and efforts trying to reach individuals who aren't interested. Spend your own time growing your crowd why they should do business alongside you in other techniques show those folks.

Do not get caught up in what is common. You have to differ to stand out. You become different when you don't follow advice that is popular but ineffective. Focus on building relationships and also an engaged audience will purchase from you. Maintain and develop a reputation can trust. You will get more company in the long term.

Do you agree with the 3 myths? What other marketing myths have you ran across?

Cheers!

    4. "Just take action and you will see results."
If you take action and you happen to be going in the wrong direction, you'll just end up even more lost.

    5. "Once you provide valuable content to your list, they will buy from you."
I'm not against providing value, I'm all for it. The problem is that you can still not make any sales if the ONLY thing you do is provide value but you fail to connect how your product would help your audience.

Those 2 immediately came to mind.

    Regards,
    Daniel

  • great post, I myself have noticed that social media does not provide great traffic any more when i'm testing for new projects. To get some return and increase chances i had to spend money ie. Facebook ads... very cheap and super targetted... good results and it helped my organic social media efforts a lot too

    6. "You can make money online by only working a few hours a week"

As much as I agree with the merits of outsourcing ONCE you have a business in place, I simply don't feel this is a realistic notion to push on to those looking to start out.

Agreed, when you are already set up, this can be a reality, but so many people are under the influence IM is "easy" and can be done with minimal effort. NOT THE CASE.

I to this day still spend at least 14 hours a day working, out of choice. I could likely cut that down to 1-2 hours with outsourcing, but it took years of study and graft to get where I am. To suggest someone else could do the same in a few hours a week is ridiculous.

Amen. One of my old bosses used to have a sign in his office:

You can get ahead here working only half days.

You can even pick which half.

I'm a firm believer in the 80/20 rule, and for someone starting out it often takes time to ID the 20% that's important.

Very well said John, big advocate of that sentiment myself. It take serious graft to get in to that position though, sadly that's what many people aren't willing to accept.

The working smart vs working hard approach makes sense, but it doesn't mean the process is completely devoid of effort at all!

I don't know that the goal was to reach the uninterested when cold calling or going door to door. They just did not know who was interested and so tried many people. Of course it is best to target your audience if you have a way to do that.
