Amazing marketing technology.

The video ad, which will appear in Los Angeles and New York subscription copies of the Sept. 18 Entertainment Weekly (out Sept. 11), is part of a bigger CBS campaign for the fall season that starts Sept. 21.

I've always wondered how long it would take to put something like this in effect... amazing! Thanks for the link.

Its cost prohibitive... what makes it doable is that its ground breaking. They are betting on the free exposure money can't buy with news stories covering it.

Below is another story about the first company to use "digital ink"

Esquire First Publication To Use Electronic Ink -- E-Ink -- InformationWeek

It appeared in Esquire magazine last year. It garnered a ton of free press.

Now it is. The early adopters always pay more to be first with new technology. Eventually, at some point, the prices will come down.

"The player technology, using a flexible, thin, plastic screen, was created by Americhip. When the two-page ad opens, the sound is akin to one of those talking, musical greeting cards. Also built into the ad is a 2-inch-by-1.5-inch video screen."

I feel like it's really wasteful and I agree with Josh that it has to be cost prohibitive, they just want the exposure, pretty cool idea on that note.

I wonder how much those sealed mags will sell on eBay a week after they're released.

I love how you can embed video and multimedia into pdf files.

This would be excellent idea if it was giving readers content. Personally I cant stand the ads on TV in between breaks. It drives me nuts. You settle down to watch your favourite serial and what do you get a break every 10 minutes, so you end up changing channels.

No wonder TV channels have such low reach - people just cant be bothered to watch a program.

Saturation is a big issue here. The same thing with google adwords - there comes a point when it becomes counterproductive.

I would not like to shell out extra dough for the sake of some video ads.

A magazine should be read and then passed on as I do on the subway so other people get mileage out of my $4 magazine.

I think this is just an intrim format. When magazines start going over to electronic formats -- like Kindle for example -- I think we'll start to see a lot more video based ads.
