Backing Up A WordPress Blog

Has anyone used the WordPress Database Backup Plugin? Are there better alternatives?

And just out of curiosity, how often do you back yours up (or any of your sites for that matter)?

  • I've heard horror stories about people thinking their auto backups were working, but when it came time for a restore they were SOL. My WP sites are small enough that I usually just do a manual once a week.

    • I am really bad about backups. I have relearned this lesson time and time again over the years

For those of us with many blogs, I can't see keeping up with it manually. I would be interested to hear opinions from anyone who has actually used this plugin.

  • Anytime I log into the blog its asking me to update the version but im concerned I will lose certain data etc, what do I have to backup and how?
  • It's really just a mySQL dump you need.

Run a cron tab like this:

    mysqldump -u admin -p<password> <dbname> > /<pathname>/dbname.bak.sql

You can program it daily, hourly whatever. Then just ftp it offsite.

    • I've been using the BackUp WordPress plugin and haven't had any problems. It backs up at least once a week. Sometimes I back it up if I've added a lot of information. I definitely back it up before updating wordpress.

  • I use the plugin regularly with no problems across hundreds of blogs...

  • I've heard so many bad words about the backup, I just do a manual once a week. My posts are small and it's no problem. But I might try the backup plugin just for fun....maybe.
