Do you write out what youre gonna say word for word?
Or do you just write major points and talk.

I write out the "structure of the video" with a few small points elaborating on that, and just read it a few times, imagine doing the video in my head, then just do it off the cuff.

Usually works fine, but sometimes requires a few takes or so :p

It's very important to stay focussed on the camera, so referring to notes mid-video is a no-no for me.

I do what ever I'm more comfortable with depending on the video.

Have central points, know your topic, and say it like you're talking to a friend.

Trying to get it down word for word only works with voiceovers, and competent actors.

The videos I produce are educational in nature, so they are scripted and rehearsed; often requiring several "takes" before being released.

Yes, my videos are all educational in nature.
Very meta in fact, im teaching educators different ways to teach and the psych behind how students learn.

          So MYOB, I wonder

Do you write out your script and everything you want to cover, then record yourself loosely reciting the script. Or do memorize as much as you can?

I personally find it helps to write a full script, practice saying it then do the video using just reminder bullets.

Takes a bit of time but for me it comes out more natural than if I was just reading word for word in the video and there's minimum takes because I've already practiced it!

I think this is one of those things that's not going to be the same fit for everyone.

            Cheers
            Jon

I start with a simple outline highlighting the key points. Then I turn that outline into a presentation with Keynote or Powerpoint. Then I record my video as I go through the presentation. If its your first time a full script might help but make sure you keep it natural as you read. Once you're more comfortable go with bullet points.

For example: If I were to create a product about this exact topic it would look like this:

    How to record product videos

    Create an outline
List your product topic at the topic
List 5 to 10 main bullet points for your product
Break each main bullet point into 3 to 5 bullet points

Create a presentation from your outline
Start a new powerpoint, keynote, or google slides
Create a title page with the name of your product and logo
use your main bullet points as slide headings
Use your additional bullet points as bullets on your slides

    Record your video product
Load your screen capture software and hit record
Put your presentation in present mode
Record your videos as you go through the slides
    Edit video if necessary

I do write word for word because I'm not English native. It helps me a lot this way.
