From the sounds of your blog, your best bet is to pitch political sites who don't mind off-the-cuff writing.

Unfortunately, you've really pigeonholed yourself into a very specific niche and I doubt very much that you'll find many blogs in that area that are willing to pay anything significant for guest posts, if anything.

And since your main goal is to promote your blog while also making money, I don't think you're going to be able to have your cake and eat it, too.

Due to your niche, you have two options:

1. Guest post on other political blogs for free and get exposure for your blog as a sort of "payment."

OR

2. Develop a broader writing portfolio and get paid to contribute articles for larger news sites (this is where the real money is at).

Essentially, you have a choice:

Work hard guest posting for free and wait the months or possibly years it will take to make money from the eventual exposure of your blog (though I'm not sure how you'd monetize a political blog), or re-invent yourself and make some real money by pitching legitimate online magazines.

If you do decide to go that route though, you really need to brush up on your grammar and syntax. Pick up an AP style guide and gets to readin', because sites that are serious about paying contributors don't mess around when it comes to the technical know-how side of things.

You'll also need to find out who the editor is of each site you're pitching, past submissions they've accepted and what kind of tone they generally prefer, so you're not wasting either of your time.

Please note, this is coming from my own experience in the writing industry as a freelance writer for the last five years, so hopefully you'll take this to heart and not as me being negative. Just trying to educate you on the reality of the guest posting world.

I completely agree with Jennifer. This is what you need to do and continue posting articles while keeping patience, as guest blogging will actually take time to show you results.

Hi!

I want to give you advice on some things you must understand about attracting an audience.

Attracting an audience means

that a particular group of people (readers) who are interested in what you are writing about, will come back again and again to read your blog and to interact with you.

but for that to happen you need to have the right foundation that will appeal to the TYPE OF people you want to attract to your blog.

So when you say you want to have a real audience what you mean

is that you want to serve a particular group of people who have a particular problems or needs that you can solve with your blogging efforts.

When I went to your blog it was hard to understand what it was about,

Let alone WHO the blog is for.

As a blogger you NEED to attract an audience if you want your blog to mean something, but that is something every specific

You need to know and understand the problems that your TARGET audience are facing and you need to provide solutions to them.

That is the only way they will follow you, people are far to busy to just read your blog because they think your a nice guy.

you could be the most fascinating person in the entire world, but unless you are serving people and providing them with what they are looking for, then they will just lose interest.

If readers are finding solutions to their specific problems by reading your stuff, then they will come back again and again to find more solutions form you.

In other words..

if you want to attract an audience then you blog needs to be about them, not about you.

blogging is about SERVING information seekers not documenting opinion and thoughts.

well, that is if you want to build a business form your blog.

with that being said here are some questions that will hopefully help you gain clearly in terms of WHO you are trying to reach and serve with your blog

What problem am I passionate about?
What problems do I specifically solve?
What is the tangible value that I provide?
Who do I solve problems for?

if you can come up with answers to this questions then you will be on the right track towards attracting your audience.

until then no matter how much traffic you get to your site people will just not "stick" to it

In that case, I could really use an agent, or some sort of business partner, to focus on the promotion part of the business for me. There must be an online place to help writers find that. I can happily go broader, but I have also been accused of being scattershot. To that, I say, look here.

I could happily build a tight, focused blog revolving around the themes in my timeline, but getting them to the right audience, I dunno.

I could, especially for money, write content outside my preferred niche, but I realize that probably wouldn't help a focused blog, at all.

As of now, my blog is more a clearinghouse of past articles written, sans any thematic rhyme or reason. Good in a resume sense, but not for niche blog.

I really wish I could find an audience that my timeline stuff appeals to. I could happily send out stuff like that, all day, but to find that audience...? Well, that's why I'm talking, to you. Center-right political commentary, hawkish, but with some non-political pieces thrown in for good measure, such as for science, and technological progress.

When people say I should look through blogs, my response is, "How?" I don't know my way through the blogoshpere, and no one's me any tools, or technigues. I keep describing what I'm looking for, and no one's really shown a how, or where, though I have a few ideas.

If you were doing a blog like I've, how would you get traffic? That's my basic question.

The thing is that your basic foundation is not solid enough,

so no matter how much traffic you get people will not "stick" to your blog and follow you,

the reason for this is Lack of Message

the following things need to be very clear to you and to your readers once they reach your blog:

What you do?

how you help the people who will read your blog or how do you meet their needs?

and who is your blog specifically created for?

if your "niche" is way too specific then maybe expand it a little.

So what you need to do before anything is gain some basic clearly about what you are "really" trying to do with your blog and online activities.

>or do you want to use it to sell your service?

>or as a resume, to attract clients?

you must understand how different these things are and that you can not emphasize all of them in the same blog.

you MUST use ONE as the MAIN theme and the rest you can use as sub-themes

a "niche" blog is NOT about writing about a particular subject.

A NICHE blog basically means a website that is created for a particular audience that you want to attract...

and attracting an audience is our ultimate goal no matter what you are doing online, it is the ONLY way to have true success

does not matter if you are a freelancer or an entrepreneur. The PURPOSE of blogging is to show the type of people we want to attract that we can meet their needs or solve their problems consistently.

or in other words to establish that we are knowledgeable enough to provide solutions to the people who inquire into our business.

form there people will inquire into YOU deeper. Rather that be your paying for your service or buying your products.

in a study by Google in their 2012 Zero Moment of Truth research they concluded that on average it takes 10.4 pieces of content before a reader will take action on what ever you want them to.

but that content MUST be written for them, and they must gain something form it every time.

So when you say that your blog is more of a resume and that is has no particular theme

but that you still want to attract an audience, you are contradicting your self.

you can not have it both ways.

Here's why

~~Put your self in the mind of the reader who comes to your blog~~

let's imagine that this particular person is the ideal reader that you want to be visiting your blog

What are this person's political views?

what can this person get form reading your blog?

How do you plan on serving this person?

WHY should this person follow you???

you need to be able to physically answer this questions, and communicate the answers to the people who visit your blog as soon as they land on it...

IF you want an audience.

They NEED to understand what is in it for them! your blog needs to be created for THEM.

that is the only way they will consider coming back and following you...

Now, if that person goes to your blog and just see a bunch of random content with no theme or structure then he or she will run out of their and find a website where they will find exactly what they are looking for.

The internet is NOT a broad marketing tool, It is very specific.

and readers need to understand what is in it for them, before they will listen to you on a consistent basis.

form your blog they will follow you on facebook and so on..

but your blog is like your virtual home, it is what you have created in the world of online information, and it will serve as the base for all of your online activities.

it is where people will decide if YOU can help THEM or not.

And Attracting an audience is just that,

"It Is about setting up the right foundation that will ATTRACT the audience that your are TARGETING"

once that foundation is set-up the right way then you can begin to focus on traffic.

and people will stick to you and to your business with ease.

Why?

>because your message is clear and people resonate with it

>because now you are serving people and they are getting something form following you

>because now they know EXACTLY what you can do for them and that they can expect more of it form you.

>because now your blog is about them, more then it is about you.

You need to create solid reasons why people should follow you, and you need to master communicating those reasons to them.

Attracting a following or an audience is not something you do on the side.

It is where MOST of your focus should be no matter what you are doing online.

in there Dun will clarify a lot of the concepts that I spoke about in greater detail

and lastly You need to get more educated in terms of online marketing.

Remember that while your blog may be about politics it is the marketing concepts and principles that will make or break you in the end of the day.

Hi,

You can find out the influencer of you niche and can ask them to write for you or even interview them and publish that on your blog. This will really help you in getting traffic from their readers too.

Reach out to blogs that have several writers on board. You can even look into smaller blogs as well offering your service for a small fee. Eventually, as blogs grow, many people hire a few others below them to help with the work load. Best of luck!

The easiest way to be a guest blogger: just ask! Find blogs in your niche and shoot them a friendly message. I had a blog many years ago and loved getting ideas pitched from other bloggers. It not only provided me with content, but also expanded my network of contacts.

Just do some Google searches about the topics you want to guest blog about. Chances are you'll have no problems finding blog websites to pitch to.

You are probably going to hate this advice but...

The easiest way is to be friends with the people you want to write for.

The bad news is that it takes time to become friends with someone.

The good news is that you can be friends with people on the Internet.

You can use twitter or you can sign up for a group like Copyblogger's training program and simply network for 15 minutes to 30 minutes a day with the intent of simply becoming friends with people.

Eventually, and you'll recognize it yourself, you will have gained enough trust to be able to ask them. And because of this level of trust, when you ask them they won't feel like you are impeding. They will feel like you are offering help.

And that makes a big difference.

Mike, thank you for the long response; I will try to incorporate what you said, and I see you have a very accomplished advertising style. I have though about adding that to my writing style/toolbox, but every time I've tried, it came out half-baked.

No, to make, say, a center-right hawk blog, it's not tuned right to that niche, or really, any niche, but for now, I'm just trying to find me an audience.

That, and by now, I'm getting positively swamped by things "I should read."

I know of Quora, but these forums, I'll need to vet, to see what I can, and can't get away with, in promoting on them. Really, it is about offering value, and not advertising, but still...

Also...are there any other similarly relevant forums covering international events? I'm surprised how hard it was to just find these.

Oh...and I don't know about Copyblogger, how to use it, to make friends. As for Twitter, yes, but I don't have a smartphone. I'd have to get one, or else use the internet to access my account.

Not a lot of stuff to sift through--mainly corprorate-professional blogs, linked to news agencies.

I need to figure out how to find the kind of blogs I'm looking for--namely ones that aren't linked to news agencies, and of those, which are compatible to my vision.

One thing I also need to keep in mind, is that the niche I'm looking for may not exist, or at least in a way I recognize.

Makes a certain sense, though; I read articles not blogs, except "blogs" linked to professional news sites, like the Huffington Post. That is where the conversation is, but I don't know how to break into it. This isn't a group like underground pickup artist community, who write their stuff for their own niche, and certainly are never linked to any professional news agencies.

It's taken me time to recognize this, really. Thing is, I don't see how all I've read about "niche blogging," will help me do the kind of blog, a) the kind of community and b) the kind of competition.

Hm...would email editorials to newspaper sites work, as a beginning, with a link back to my blog? That's the only idea, I can think of.

One very important thing that I would highly recommend on your site is an opt-in form. Without one, you cannot capture leads and build a list. You can get tons of visits daily to your blog but if you don't have a list, you cannot build a solid following and your success will all be short term. I would suggest getting an autoresponder because if you do guest blogging, you will get traffic. It would be waste if you can't capture that. Every single visit to your blog will be a one time thing instead of creating repeat visitors which eventually become followers. I do think you have a pretty solid blog tho.

As for guest blogging, just google it. Blogs that accept guest blog posts. Odds are, you'll come across a blog with a long list of blogs that accept guest blog posts. You do need to keep in mind however that guest blogging is different from blogging on your own blog. Blog owners have certain rules and a criteria that they keep in mind. Whenever providing content for other blogs, the winner that gets published is always the one who provides high quality content. That way, you will not only get published, but you will get a solid amount of visits to your blog which is pretty much the main focus for guest blogging unless you're into SEO which is a different story.

Once you find a blog, simply reach out to them. It would help big time building a relationship with the blog owner. I would recommend leaving comments on his/her blog so that they get a chance to recognize you at first and it would help connecting on social media. Having a solid relationship makes the whole process a lot easier.

If you want to earn money through writing then it's you find out websites or blogs who pays for writing to their sites. Upon gathering a list, just pitch your best ideas about writing, I'm sure if your writing is good, you'll get response.

But before that submit your writing to some guest blogs, so that you can use such posts as a referring post to their paid sites for whom you'll write after.

You need to look for relevant blogs in your industry. Go to Google for example and look for:

- "your niche" blog
- "your niche" guest post
- "Your niche" Contributor

Contact them and ask if you can write some content for them. Show them some of your posts so they know you can write some good content.

Your writing, just read parts of 2 pages, is too fanciful for most business blogs.

You must find people who are a bit more advanced in their writing needs.

If you wish to shoot high and seeing you're also into politics, contact huffingtonpost and salon.com.

Take one of your posts, and search the internet for what people would use to find that particular piece of content... Look through the results and contact the owner.

Local newspapers need content too...

You can find millions of blogs in the google search and if they announce they want guest bloggers. You can contact them using there form on the websites and reach out to them.

Check out your favorite blogs in your niche and just pay attention to details, if you see different people posting each day, they accept guest posts for sure, just contact them and send them a proposal.

Now, you need to see what type of content they are doing as guests, some blogs have some topics for that and not allow you to create anything you want, maybe yes! Just ask them and pey attention to what other people create for thar particular blog.

You can also find popular topics (trending topics) and write about the same topic, then contact a small blog to post as guest, this way you will get more exposure.

Search in Google for your niche or keyword + "write for us". For example if I am in the seo niche I will search in Google for SEO "write for us" so that you will get all the blogs in SEO niche that accepts guest posting on their site. As you are a good writer you can write quality articles for that site and get good traffic.

It's from Britain, but I could be too conservative, for it. Still...

Doesn't seem to be working. In any case, the people I'm interested in reaching, are like me, perusing the cream of Google news for articles, Viewing New York TImes pieces at a premium. Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, also. People I can have intelligent one-on-one conversations with, really. They make article comments on newspaper sites, and other sites. I want to attract them, I need to attract them, because those are the people I'm writing for...at least, I think I am.

Hm...the only guy i'd like to emulate, is this guy, here, and he's got a YouTube Channel, not a blog. (Also, I only wish to emulate, to a point.)

So, propose at article to the Wall Street Journal editors. Or comment on articles in the Wall Street Journal, finding a way to mention your blog.

Doesn't seem to be working. In any case, the people I'm interested in reaching, are like me, perusing the cream of Google news for articles, Viewing New York TImes pieces at a premium. Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, also. People I can have intelligent one-on-one conversations with, really. They make article comments on newspaper sites, and other sites. I want to attract them, I need to attract them, because those are the people I'm writing for...at least, I think I am.

As I think about it, I'm not sure that I have the temperament to be a freelance online writer; the only way it would work is if someone handled the marketing, and I produced the content.

Probably, I should focus on finding someone like that, instead; I have Aspergers, and interacting with others just isn't my cup of tea.

I've spent a huge amount of time learning various online skills, but I'm just too far scattered to make self-marketing work, because I find it hard doing more than one thing at a time.. I can sit down, and make a quality article on any number of topics, and spend long hours doing so, but putting it through the pipeline isn't me; I've tried to the point of burnout.

I need stimulation, life, to write, and it's just too stale, here. I need an audience, if only a small one, as I transition to a large one. I have bills to pay in the mean time, and I just have a hard time shifting between finding regular work, and this.

I should probably come up with a pitch, shouldn't I? I Can come up with one, show it to people in the forum, and have it revised--forgive me my ramblings.

Here's a proto-draft of it--tell me what you think:

Hello. My name is Philip Carpenter, and I am seeking an agent/business partner for myself, as I proceed to market myself as a freelance writer/journalist.

Looking back so far over thirty-seven years, I have come, dare I say, to realize what I am very good at.

To wit, I'm smart, very smart, and good writer, want to be doing this as a career. I love to read, and even more, to share my thoughts, and ideas, with others.

And even better, given that's pretty much all I want to do, I'd really like to get paid for it.

Trouble is, still looking back over my thirty-seven years, I happen to be sufficiently self-aware of a key weakness.

Simply put, I do not like to market myself. Or, I'm simply not good at it.

Or, I'm a little bit crazy—but let's not go there, shall we?

Oh, I do not mind banging out articles, long articles, or editing them, but I do mind the hassle of self-promotion. I don't like it, am not comfortable with it, and I probably never will.

Maybe it's my inflexible Aspergers, maybe it's my in-born stubbornness, maybe...I don't know. I just know that after thirty-seven years of living, I do not seem to be a good freelance journalist, even if I posses more than my share of ability.

Like me you're ambitious, driven, but blessed with ability to ask for things...and make them want to give it to you. I could you. You do the work of finding paying publishers, and I'll write to them the work that pays.

A symbiotic blending of abilities, really; I'm a content provider, but I need a middle man for my talents, as you can see, at noitartst.com; it's basically a clearinghouse for things I've written, but it's also a nice resume, of sorts, for my chops. I have a channel on YouTube, as well—for good measure.

I'll be famous, one day, and per your role, you'll get a cut.

Specifically, you need to be people-savvy, but also, tech-savvy, computer savvy. I have been developing my own skills, already, and will be doing more, but if nothing else, we could just make money via blog traffic: Developing traffic would fall under your domain, whereas content, as ever, is mine.

Exact percentages can be negotiated but keep in mind: You are not simply doing this for profit, but also to help compensate someone over something he has otherwise struggled with. For me, it it is to but make an impact within the greater world.

But be forewarned: I have an odd brand of politics, and will say but odder things. I'm not the most partisan of pundits, but my socio-cultural views do indeed steer right. If you can't handle it, don't say I didn't warn yas.

If you create content that resonates with potential reader and then offer it to people in your niche who already have a following, you'll usually get favourable responses, given that most people would jump for an opportunity where someone else is creating content for them.
However knowing exactly what people in your niche want is the first step to successful guest blogging.

To tell you how well it works, you'd have to tell me to who and how you're going to distribute it.

Hi,

Why don't you contact some blog owners in your niche and offer to guest blog for them, and

in return, offer to put one of their articles on your blog.

This way you get to guest bnlog for them and they get extra exposure from you as well.

It's a win win situation!

There are networks that connect site owners with guest bloggers.

For my dating sites I was once looking for guest bloggers and I had good success using (it's free): Blogger LinkUp – Bringing Bloggers Together ...hmm, it doesn't look active anymore, but there are similar services.

Maybe there are also Facebook groups that try to connect guest bloggers and webmasters... or you could create a group yourself.

Another Facebook groups idea: find a FB group that covers your niche and post a message stating that you'd like to guest blog within that particular niche.

Create a simple YouTube video with a SEO title stating that you're a guest blogger within your niche. Example title: "Looking For A [insert your niche] Guest Blogger?" Once a webmaster within your niche starts searching for guest bloggers, they'll stumble on your video sooner or later.

You could offer content to bloggers and newsletter publishers. You could sign up to guest blogging sites. You could be approached by bloggers because they love your info so well that they want it on their site. You could create articles and let the world know that they can use your articles - but only if they keep your article "byline" intact. Or you offer your services on Fiverr.

If you want to get paid you gotta apply for jobs on upwork and freelancer etc. Id do so by applying with a sample article re what theyre asking about. Thisll separate you from the rest of the pitches.

Look. I am a good writer, but all this generalized blog advice does not take into account my exact scenario, and that's angering. I went to a great deal of frustration looking for "other" bloggers, but there aren't any, given if they're any good, they've all become professional, and stopped being amateurs.

I think my blog shows the direction I'm headed, but generic, non-customized gameplan is doing me no good, but instead, great frustration, given its total irrelevance, assuming things that aren't true.

If I'm wrong, tell me just who the influencers for my niche really are. You need to go deeper with me than you have, because they don't exist.

The other option, really, is just to find myself an agent/business partner.

To piece together a detailed strategy, really, I want to do--but first, we need to nail down my niche; if you're not prepared to help me find it, forget it. As I've said, it is professional news agencies. I'm prepared to go up against them, but I want a strategy, first.

Well, there are some ways, around my dilemma. Mainly, I could write comments on the various news articles if I find interesting on my key influencers, i.e. the Times Christian Science Monitor, etc., and include links to my site and articles, creating a backlink strategy, that way. And, I could also do Quora, as well as two, or three forums.

And, I could give links here, showing my activity, and what what I've done to promote, and how.

I really am trying.

Howdy. I've made a sample letter, explaining the help I need, in understanding how to go forward, promoting, my blog. It has specfics, but it can be more so. I'm still not clear how to promote my blog for this niche, but this is me showing my best current understanding:

I've created a blog*, but I'm still learning how to effectively promote it. They say it is best to start by guest blogging in the blogs of others within my niche, but in my case, I can't.

And I can't for a very good reason.

I can show you the kind of*articles I want to write and they're typically of a sociopolitical/foreign events quality. I love reading such, and I also love writing it, but the kind of people that are my natural audience are like me: They use Google News. They peruse the internet, scooping up articles of interest, and devour them. The influencers are the New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Huffington Post, and Wall Street Journal.

But how to reach them? I came to that conclusion after trying to “find” my niche, only to find it didn't seem to exist, sans professionals—which is where I want to be—one day.

Getting there, though...if the influencers/competition, are professional news agencies. The advice I keep getting doesn't*specifically*apply to the niche I'm interested in, and that's where I'm getting ticked at my advisors. What is needed is to adapt best tactics around my dilemma.

Submissions - Salon.com is the link to where you submit articles to salon.com. They publish well-written political articles. If you think your stuff is up to par, use the link.

You get upset at your advisors, but you did get good advice, adapt it to what you want to accomplish and apply. Starting thread after thread asking for advice is not going to help, if you don't use the advice you get.

And, no, the advice won't be 100% perfect match to your situation because we are not you.

Comments on the magazines/journals you like to read are your best way of getting to be known. Most don't allow links... But, if you build a reputation and sneak in comments like:

I went into greater detail on my blog, Name of Blog...

Link or no link, people will find you...

Don't do it often, don't do it till you have a good reputation on that site.

I am your target audience... I don't use quora. I doubt most of your audience uses quora or yahoo answers to get answers to questions that are above: What's the temperature to heat up Marie's Mini Quiches?

You're right...I have fear. Too much fear. Okay. Just focus on writing articles, I guess, a big one a week, or something like that, then promote over social media, to start? I think I can do that, and then focus on other things related to promotion? I think I can do that.

I'm stressed out...I need to figure out a routine, going forward. I'll do something, though. How does a thousand-word article every week on my blog, sound?

You can find blog according to your niche & go to his guest post page. Read the guidelines & send an email for guest posting. You can also send a friendly message through direct mail & any other source like social channel.

Go to Google and searched your keyword. For example: If your keyword is Money making ideas, then you can search Money Making Ideas "guest post".

Now you can see some blog according to your topic. Check his guest post page & read the guidelines. After that you can send your message, email here.
