Was thinking of starting a viral news blog but was wondering what I should do about images? I'm quite aware of copyright infringements so I want to make sure that all my images are legit....so what would be a good source for images for a viral news blog? How do others do it?

You can check out the creative commons website, just google it, morguefiles or pixabay. That's where I get royalty free images.

Most of the reputable stock photo sites offer small size images that can be used on blogs. You can get these for $1 at some site ... even less if you buy a monthly subscription.

Yes, there are free image sites available, but my experience is the paid sites offer much more variety and better quality images. Besides, I would rather buy an image that comes with a license rather than use a free image and wonder if it is really supposed to be free.

Some of the stock sites I use are DepositPhotos, Fotolia, Dreamstime, 123rf, istockphoto and others.

I have had the same experience as Steve. Maybe I am picky but I just can't be bothered with the free sites for many years now. Not enough good quality specific images and the search functions are usually not as good either. My favorite has been istockphoto.

Just pay for them. Problem solved. Some of the free stock photo sites have good images. The biggest thing is that you have legal rights of owning and using the photos on your blog. So you pay for them and have proof, you're in the clear.

  • I had originally started this thread a while ago but I am still wondering a few things...as others have mentioned above, yes you can use stock photos for a viral news blog.

But how does a site like ViralNova.com do it?

For instance, take a look at this story This Guy In Thailand Was Using The Bathroom When A Snake Swam Up And Bit His Penis

How did they get permission to legally use those images? You can't buy images like that on stock photo sites....I would love to know how they do this without any liability issues...

It looks like that particular story is just Instagram embeds.

The others look like combination of stock photos, screenshots of Youtube videos, Reddit images, user-submitted content (ViralNova - Your Stories On The Web), slightly edited news stories e.g. adding an arrow, sponsored posts e.g. Every Home In This Eco-Friendly Village Is Made Out Of Plastic Bottles. Presumably most would be non-issue (happy to receive the publicity), a minority may take issue with it.

Just make sure you have clear policy on it e.g. ViralNova - Your Stories On The Web

Or if you want to be sure, then contact the copyright owner individually and hope for a response ... But time kills news stories.

If I were you I would just start with the ones that you know are safe and go from there. Just start with what you have.

If you're going to be using a lot of stock images, I'd use a subscription service like Big Stock Photo, they have a free 5 day trial (no affiliation). But I am often impressed with Pixabay & Pexels, start with them & if no luck then move onto paid. (Search Kermit on Pixabay - amazingly hilarious).

  • I wonder if there are any legalities in using Twitter embeds and screenshots of YouTube videos?

When it comes to using images on a blog, I am very paranoid simply because I don't want to get sued.
