Newbie(ish) Struggling For His First Profit

(This will be a little long so if your wanting to skip to the meat and potatoes, scroll to the RED word.)

Hello everyone, my name is Zach! I've been coming to this site for a few years now (and I may or may not have made an account at some point over the years), and decided it was time to join. Now, I'm sure your wondering why I said that I'm newbie(ish), aren't you? Well, I stumbled across an eBook through an email back in 2007 at the ripe young age of 17, and it really caught my interest. I ended up buying that eBook about 2 weeks later from that TERRIBLE looking page that got stuck in my head. I paid exactly $50 for the eBook that *promised* I would make a living online in under a month. The massive 4 page eBook in huge font told me absolutely nothing. But, I was hooked on the topic and have been researching almost daily ever since. I consider myself a newbie(ish) because I know enough to not be NEW to it, but I have yet to make a profit. I've made sales, but not enough to get in the green, yet! (I'm only -$9.22 after almost 8 years as of right now).

Over the years I have researched and studied day after day thinking something would finally stick that worked for me. Everything I learned clearly worked, it just didn't work for me. To date I have tried: Youtube ads, affiliate marketing on both Facebook and Twitter, JV's on Twitter and Youtube, Facebook ads, starting a forum, Fiverr and a few other sites, flipping domains, along with MANY other things. Then I took a big hit...

The big hit hurt my ego and pride more then anything, and more then I could have imagined, and I admit, I gave up. It only lasted 2 weeks luckily, but it still counts. I spent close to 8 months putting together a good sized (267 pages plus a few bonuses) eBook, but the site never looked good, or when it looked good it flat out didn't work.. I got stuck trying to figure out how to deliver the products and boom! Tragedy struck... my laptop crashed and couldn't recover any of my files..

I now keep not one, but TWO flash drives with everything backed up.. I also learned a very good lesson on why NOT to over-clock a mid-low priced laptop..

HERE is the problem. I've been out of work since August and things are not looking good in my area. I have a 3 year old daughter that I have to travel to see (her mother splits the cost with me) and it took up every extra penny I had from my last job, which was one of the highest paying jobs in the area(I was also living without cable, internet, and in a run down house that I couldnt even afford to live in after the job loss). I am now a little over $22k in debt and at risk of seeing my daughter even less then I'm already able to. Her mothers job requires her to travel ALOT. So I am DESPERATE to find something that will work for my daughters sake. I'm not looking to get rich, or even anywhere close to it. I just need to be able to travel and be a bigger part in my daughters life. If anybody would be willing to help me out, even in the slightest way, I would greatly appreciate it. I know I have to be missing something. There HAS to be something I don't know about. I learn, I take action, I learn some more, but still lack results..

So the huge question is..

What am I missing?!

Sounds like you got blinded by BS

The technology is not the solution.

Keep switching ideas and you'll never learn anything (READ THIS).

What problem can you solve for people who have it? Start there. Because you've been all over the frickin' place until now.

Hey Zach, if you've been doing this for about 8 years now and you're not seeing results, there's something you absolutely NEED to understand now:

You haven't committed to any one business model seriously enough.

Look, there are many legitimate ways to make money online but the first thing to do if you're still not seeing results is to decide what you're going to do as a long-term business model...

Is it affiliate marketing?

Kindle Publishing?

Freelancing?

Creating and selling your own product?

Take some time to figure what model you're going to pursue; you only need to get ONE business right to make a livable income online (or possibly more but that's a different animal altogether).

Once you've determined what you want to do, you need to educate yourself as much as possible on that model so you do the right things from the start and don't waste years trying to "figure this thing out".

The next step after that is to work your butt off.

Running a business online is not something for the faint of heart.

Just like any brick and mortar business, you need to treat your online business with a fierce work ethic or you won't ever see results.

Look Zach, I really am sorry to hear about your situation, and it breaks my heart that this might make it difficult for you to see your little girl.

But you need to get serious about what you're doing.

I sincerely hope what I outlined above really gives you some clarity on what you need to do.

Regards,
Daniel

What are your skills? Talents? Interests? How can you turn those into something that helps other people with their problems and provides real value?

If you are broke, you probably need to look for any kind of work you can get while you are learning and growing on the online front.

If I may ask, what was your 267 page ebook about? Did you write it from scratch yourself?

There are a lot of helpful people here but if I were you I would commit to a couple things:

1. Don't buy anything else. You will probably receive messages with special opportunities or coaching or whatever through the forum. Ignore every one - no matter who it comes from. If you feel compelled to act because it really sounds like a good idea, then post about it here on this thread and get advice from others. There are plenty of sharks here too that smell desperation and will suck you dry.

2. Don't just read. Figure out what you want to do and how you are going to do it. Then start and adjust along the way. Note: adjusting means adjusting NOT changing course. Stick to that one thing and your plan and don't give into temptation to look at anything else. Ignore the emails and the threads and the bright shiny objects that will drag you away from your purpose and do nothing more than make you unsuccessful for a longer time.

Mark

1. So some will think I'm harsh here, but if I was in your situation I would have held off on that $ for the war room. Not saying it's not a valuable resource, but with what it sounds like it was not necessarily the best investment of your money at this time given your current situation.

2. Don't spend another dime until you have a full plan figured out. I see you are not necessarily looking to "get rich" - how ever it is that you define that term. Many things in life can determine if you think you are rich or not.

One switch you need to flip in your head is to realize ALL the money you make online is/should be considered business. It is exchange of money for something. All business transactions. No matter how big or how small. You need to see what ever you do as business online.

Doing business requires some kind of plan. Marketing requires some kind of plan.

3. While you've stated your personal issues, none of this has anything to do with running/managing a business (other than perhaps gives us an idea of what you have to invest in a business as to money).

4. To get any money "out of thin air" you have to give something back. Something of value.

This can be physical, or digital in form, but you have to give something. And it has to have value to someone else.

You have to find who wants what you are selling. You have to figure out where they are and be able to deliver it to them. You need to know they have money to buy what ever it is you are selling.

I don't know about your ebook, or even if anyone wants what ever it is you wrote about. Did you have solid research that determined it was something of value that people wanted to pay for? Are you able to find those people without needing additional investment to reach them?

If the book was really worth it and something you were good at, it should be absolutely no problem for you to crank it back out again (even if you're truly unable to retrieve it from the hard drive). Hard drives can be removed and usb'd into another computer. Or like I said, you could just rewrite the whole thing again. If the fire is hot enough under your butt and you are that confident with what you did, you will just do this.

There are places to stick this kind of content up and sell them for nothing more than your own elbow grease.

Are you really drowning?

The information (or lack there of) that you've provided here does not give any of us really enough information to point you in better directions of how to make this work for you.

Best I could tell you for now:

1.Find the thread titled What to do if you're desperate
2. Figure out what value you can provide, and research if it is worth any money to anyone
3. Spend time searching on the best way to proceed with what you figure out
4. Make a plan, and stick to it. Be sure to specify some goals
5. Post back in here when you have very specific inquiries.

It's possible to see a profit in 24 hours. For some it takes months.

How long will it take you? Not a clue. That is all up to you and what you decide to do.

Good luck.

I think you waste your time. You did not know what your strong points.
I think you need to find offline work to survive. During that time, you need to review what your strong fields at online business and focus to it.
Good luck.

Zach,
In all honesty sounds like you have/had sporadic brain syndrome. You have gone from one thing to another.
And you have NOT stuck it out to see any real results.

All those models you mention are proven success makers. You just need to choose which one provides you with passion and gives you a hop in your step when you get up in the morning. And stick to it until you have seen some success

Hello everybody, thank you all for the replies!

Yes I will admit, I jump around alot. I'm not just trying it for a week or 2 and moving on though, I spend several months working on it while I learn more on the area. I know, I need to stick with one thing and keep working on it.

I did write the ebook myself. I would rather not mention what it is about because I am working on rewriting it and there's still nothing available on the topic yet (at least nothing I can find for any of the keywords) and it gets a pretty good amount of searches. I had sold 4 copies I printed out to some friends right before I lost it and they all had nothing but good things to say about it (and before anyone asks, yes I asked them all if they still had the printed copy but none have found it yet). I'm just struggling to write it as well as I did the first time but I'll get it done at some point.

I'd be very careful of this. Untapped, profitable niches are extremely rare. Lack of competition normally means lack of profitability. While some get lucky, it's very rare.

There is good demand for it, and it gets alot of searches for the keywords. People pay a small fortune to get past it (I did years ago, I had the same problem so I relate alot to it). The people looking for it each month aren't numbers most would consider great, but the people looking are basically stuck with 2 options from it.. They either pay for the sessions weekly, or they could possibly try my ebook first. With the sessions, a good 60% of the sessions have nothing to do with the issue at hand at all, and this usually lasts 6-8 months. I've even talked to a person that paid for it over 2 years out of his pocket.. (my insurance wouldn't cover it along with a few other people I have talked to, so I know other people are in the same position I was). Reading an ebook that costs less then one session is a no brainer, especially if they've looked up Option #1. I have even helped 4 people get past their issue in under 2 weeks and they offered to help in anyway possible when I near the end of the project. So, I'd say I might have hit a mini gold mine, If I can actually complete it this time around..haha jinxed myself, then again when I tell myself I can't do something it seems to get done better and faster

Hi Zac,

I have been online for a while but decided to get serious with affiliate marketing two and a half months ago. You can't beat affiliate marketing if you're starting out, everything is done for you!
I have been promoting Patric Chan's CB Passive Income and have already made 3 sales totaling $105
It also has all the training you need to get started.

Ok - I started with the red word

The only thing you are missing is that there's no magic coattail to grab hold of. You can make money as a blogger or affiliate - or as an author of books.

You can't do anything if you are scattered and desperate and must have money NOW. It just won't work.

Top priorities: enough money to survive and time with your daughter.

Those are GOOD priorities. As someone who grew up without her father, I can't encourage you enough in that direction. You don't say WHY you have to travel so far to see your child.

You don't have a job so why not sell most of what you own and move closer to her? Rent a room or a trailer or camper....and work at whatever jobs you can find. The time you save can be more work hours online or offline. Without the travel you don't need as much income.

My point is this: Until you have your personal life on some sort of even keel - you won't get far online. There will be computer problems and schedule problems and financial problems that will interfere consistently. You will miss important parts of your child's life and you will be stressed constantly.

You have to know where the next meal is coming from, that you CAN see your daughter frequently, that you won't end up on the street next week. Those are basic needs and you don't need a high paying job to do that.

I don't have a "9-5" job, but I do alot of small small contracts and spot jobs that actually paid more in 4 months after taxes then the previous 8. They are also all over the place just like my online attempts. Guess I can truly say that I am a jack of all trades but a master of none. haha atleast in the physical world. Haven't hit the spot in the digital world yet.. I also just accepted a position but I'm not starting until late April. So thats something to keep my spirits up a bit.

honestly dude, manifest it, manifest what you want to happen.. ill try to give you the process that was given to me by a spiritual master, this same process allowed me to clock in over $1k in about 3 days after failing nonstop and being unable to sell...

First i want to say is you deserve to have a "little break" you also deserve to have money and security, money to the universe is dirt.

So where do you start?

relaxation and visualization are parts of it, but the core of it is simplicity, decoding, and broadcasting. You want to design your manifestation as simply as possible and work on it every few days until you get what you want..

So heres the big technique, what is the feels like of having a monthly income? What does it feel like to you to have X amount of dollars coming into you every month consistently? When you can decode what that feels like you will have the best chance of manifesting your desires.

I think people manifest unconsciously all the time, they see something and go oh i was just thinking about that.. Get it?

Looking back my sales skills were nominal, but for some reason when i went out to go sell i had Yes, Yes, Yes... i attribute it totally to manifesting.

so look, figure out what you need, decode it down simply, clear your mind and broadcast your desire to the universe. If you cant broadcast the next best thing is to wish for it..

but remember this can be used for dark reasons, and when you get what you want dont abuse it, but try it for something else...

Hope i helped!

PS. the organization is called higher balance institute, so when you start making money go and give it to them and say thank you

You are feeling desperate and this will just keep working against you. Why not forget IM for now and find a job closer to your daughter?

Internet Marketing takes a lot of time and patience PLUS you need to 'leverage' an income to pay your bills and to live off of.

You can always come back to IM at a later time after you get your financial stuff in order.

You have some things that you will need to 'sacrifice' right now in order to move forward with your life.

What you can not get back from wasting anymore time (trying to make money online while you are desperate) is all that time away from that beautiful little girl.

You have a lot of desire to become a successful Internet Marketer (I can surely feel it).

But for now...

Sometimes we need to discard our personal dreams in order to take care of those who we love the most.

Give this sometime Zach, if you take care of your main obligations...you will get another chance at making marketing work.

Hi Zack,

I was just reading some of these comments.

I think you should keep your job and do Internet Marketing on the side, this way you don't have to feel desperate. As others mentioned you won't make money if you are coming at it from a point of desperation.

What you want to do is figure out 1 strategy for making money online and stick to it. Personally if I were you I would learn how to drive traffic, build an email list and promote affiliate products.

That is probably the easiest way to start making money online. There are many resources that you can find that will teach you how to drive traffic, collect leads and make sales.

hopped this helped

Sorry to hear things are that though on you.

I agree with most. You're probably not missing something, you just not giving enough time for things to work out.

It takes a lot of commitment and hard work to get there and the more desperate you are the worst.

If you do have some skills you can quickly monetize them on freelance networks. Your self-confidence is probably at a low, but bear with me for a minute: You are not a complete beginner. I'm sure you learned some skills during all this time, so you have something to offer!

Can you build a website or even a logo? What about writing? There's always demand for writers, especially native English speakers. So look at your skills and consider all your options.

Best of luck.

I can build basic websites and logos, but once it gets to a point where I have to get it just right I get stuck. BUT... I have an ex that moved back to her home town (err, country) after college and she does most of the work I need for free or pennies on the dollar. Writing a book and selling few copies is a good start but selling just one book is not enough if you want to get steady income to support your family. I had some serious bursts in the past but hey, you can find a job, earn some money and come back with a new strength. Some smart warriors mentioned problem solving as a way of doing it right, but it is a consequence of expertise. You spent 8 months jumping from one thing to another meaning you have still a long way to go. I would advice to take some time off.

Hi Zachery,

I'm really sorry to hear your current situation and I really hope the light is ahead soon. If I were I would search for 9-5 job and in the meantime I would spend 1-2 hours a day doing internet marketing. You have many options like affiliate marketing, cpa, building a blog, making videos and upload them on youtube. The key here is to find what you like to do and test it, if you find even tiny success by gaining some profit, then take measures to take that path seriously.

When you start to earn enough money that you could quit your 9-5 job, then that would be the time to quit it.

But why you would search now 9-5 job? For at least three reasons:

1. Pay the living
2. Have money for your trip to see your daughter
3. Pay the debt on monthly basis

There's a book called Total Money MakeoverTotal Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. This is great book which will help you to manage your finances and also to tackle that debt. I bought few months ago from Amazon, read it and applied it's recommendation and strategy to pay my debt off. I can guarantee you that his strategy is really good even though it is simple. In one year I have already paid of 30% of my debt.

P.S. I'm not trying to drag out the replies on this, the multiquote button will not work for me, it keeps refreshing the page when I click it.. I don't want to confuse anybody when trying to reply so I chose to drag it out. I also apologize for any questions I have missed, I honestly didn't expect a reply this week (I'm used to smaller forums, besides candlepower but even that can go days before the thread catches) so feel free to message me if you would like a quicker response. You all have helped me alot so far and I think this might be what I needed. A fresh look at it all from a new perspective!

Hey dude,

Before you go back and write that 200+ page ebook again... Consider doing a seed launch instead.

Set up a mini page, get their emails and offer a small ebook (few pages) that gives them some immediate result.
Write a good compelling autoresponder sequence and start working on getting the people to your website. If you've done your research right you should know where your target audience hangs out - if you don't... Do your research, and do it right! You can't sell without the proper research.

Once you've got a small number of people together offer them your solution in a series of webinars. See who's interested. If you get a handful of people go ahead and do the webinars. Maybe comp some more people into your webinar. Are there any other websites that talk about the problem but don't offer a solution? Contact the site owner and comp him into the webinar(s). Offer to write guest blog posts about it. Make a small cheat sheet to hand out.
Host a webinar of about 1 hour a week. Do a Q&A session after, and send them questionnaires. Ask them if you missed a point or didn't cover something in enough detail etc.

This way you have some cash upfront without spending months to write that ebook and still not be certain if it will even sell. Plus you will have a ton of valuable feedback to improve upon that webinar. Either write your ebook with your webinar notes and the feedback or film a video series (you generally can charge more for video courses...).

Start today, hustle this week and everything will be set up. If your product really is that good you should know by next week.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the reply! Not sure why I'm just now seeing this, but better late then never! I did start working on a "Lite" version of the ebook since I've started spreading the word with some of the people I know and they all seem very eager to see what I've been brewing up. The biggest issue I'm having at the moment is I have 1 notebook missing that I wrote a lot of the technical details and references in. Overcoming that hurdle slowly though and getting back into the groove of things. I've been trying to spend at least an hour once every 2-3 days to work on the "Lite" version and picked up a a few temp jobs raising pole barns that will help get a blog up and going.

I'm not sure if a webinar would be a good use of time at this moment though, I have put some thought into it for later down the road after I have my foot in the door more then just 15-20 people that enjoy my unorthodox look at a lot of things.

P.S. I cut out a good chunk of what I now would consider "puke", i.e. regurgitated info (I read all free ebooks, because well, who knows what could be hiding but I've also lost brain cells from a few). So as of now I'm looking at around roughly 180 pages give or take. I also decided last week to break it down and make each chapter part of a course as well after I listened to one of my books for literally the 42nd time and still catch new things I've missed. (followed by me dropping my ipod and busting the screen, go figure). Considering adding a video for each chapter but that drags out the timeline, I could always impliment it after the launch though. See, I have nexts steps. Made it farther failing then by doing all the work this time around. I learn'd!

Great responses here, all of them. Alex II has made a suggestion I was going to make myself.

What you sell is not the package. It's the solution.

If you have cancer and someone has the cure. It doesn't matter if it comes in pill form or an injection or snorting powder or supository. You just want the damn cure!

I think you need a mindset fix, but the first thing to do to get confidence is just have some success.

If your offer is really good you can sell an ebook just as you can surely sell a series of webinars. For the same price or more. Once you've done it once, you have a product.

Now, after you test and sell some, then you can sell it as is or re-record it, turn it into an ebook.

That's a more agile way to go about it. Doesn't need to be perfect. Just needs to help people and solve their real problems.

I wrote this text in reply to some other wannabe internet marketer's question but I think it may help you too. So here it is:

Money online can be made in one of the following ways:

- creating a product and then selling it
- becoming an affiliate and then promoting other people's products
- creating a viral content and attracting lots and lots of people to your website
- buying websites and selling them for profit

What do you want to focus on? Before you decide think how you intend to attract people because that will tell you a lot about what you wanna do.

In order to get traffic you can:

- use paid advertising (PPC or solo ads) - quick but requires you to spend money
- SEO - slow and requires work but free
- create interesting viral stuff and distribute it fast all around the FB and other social networks

What do you want?

Not every way of making money is suitable for every type of person. I personally like affiliate marketing, most notably Amazon, that's where I make money. Other people are good at creating their own products, some people are good at viral content. Do a research on each way of making money and just focus on that single way you like doing. If you already have a feeling what you like or don't like, go and work on what you like! Be persistent! That's it!

The success is not the other program or system or training the success is in you in your mindset think about that for a minute hundreds of thousands of people trying to make living from home but by statistic 98% of them make less then $100 per month I remember myself when I started online years ago I didn't make any sale probably for 4 years until I ask myself what is wrong what is not right ( by the way my webpages and youtube videos was on first pages of google by organic search ) but I did NOT earn any money until I understand the success principle:

WEALTH PRINCIPLE:
If you want to change the fruits, you will first have to change the roots. If you want to change the visible, you must first change the invisible.

You have to focus NOT on money (fruits) but on yourself.Just imagine for a moment how would you feel if you're already reached your dream? Feel GOOD so keep thinking and feel this in your heart everyday.
To make amount of money you want it's mind trick trust me.I want to suggest you to read a book "You Were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor

Remember one thing: The more you're worry about something the more you will again. The more you're happy about something the more you will get the same.

I'm sorry to hear about your sting of bad luck…

But just remember…if you want something bad enough, you will do whatever you need to to make it happen!

So you may have to get a job for a little to get some initial income coming in. After that, invest what you can into your online marketing and you will figure out what you need to do to make it happen!

I hope that helps and best of luck to you!
