I feel like the answer is right under my nose!

So, I work from three computers: my work desktop, my home desktop, and my netbook. I'm having a hell of a time figuring out where I've saved what...know what I mean?

Is there some type of...I don't even know what to call it...online "place" where I can store everything so that it's accessible from whatever computer I might be at? I'm talking about things like themes I've created, PLR I've downloaded, WSO's I've bought...stuff like that.

I'm getting tired of going home on Friday ready to work on stuff over the weekend only to realize that my keywords, theme, PLR files, etc. are at work, or vice versa.

Does something like this exist? I feel like I really should already know the answer to this, but it's totally escaping me.

THANKS in advance for any insight! :p

I use logmein.com to connect to various computers and either operate the computer remotely or get a file from the other machine. The basic version is free. If you want file transfer you can upgrade. Even without file transfer you can log on to the remote machine and email yourself things.

Well I think I might've found a solution. (I've been doing the "e-mail myself things" thing for awhile now and it's driving me crazy.) Check this out:

FlipDrive.com - Free Secure Online File Storage, Internet File Sharing, Photo & Video Sharing, Music Online, Store & Access Documents, Share Files Online, Online Data Backup and

    Anywhere Features and Benefits

They're both inexpensive (a plus) and although I've just glanced over them quickly, I think might be exactly what I need.

So I've answered my own question. D'oh!

Well, maybe someone else is looking for something like this too!

        I second DropBox!

A tip for DropBox: Since DropBox basically replicates a directory across all of your computers, you can store your Roboform profile directory there and point Roboform at it on each computer. That way all of your passwords are immediately available on all computers. The password files are encrypted by Roboform, and again by DropBox, so security shouldn't be a concern.

      Hi Jay,

The 'travelling' hard drive is a great idea. Btw I also carry an external hard drive with myself for this purpose. After downloading something I'm able to check it for malvares and if it is clean then I copy the stuff onto the main hard drive.

      All the best,

      Sandor

        Hi Tink,

In the past I used an online storage service and had problems.

        1. If I lost Internet connection <- Couldn't access the files I needed.
        2. Transfering files back and forth during storms caused corrupted files.
        3. Danm company went out of business and I lost everything stored there.

Now, Like Jay stated I carry a portable hard drive(actually two of them)
One for personal and one for business.

        Hope that Helps,
        Have a Great Day!

I just carry a little flash drive. Everything important that I download on my computers gets saved to the flash drive. Then just plug it into the other computer and I'm good to go with all my files, work, downloads, etc.

    Cheers,
    Becky

p.s. Sometimes I also send files to one of my web-based emails. You wouldn't want to send top-secret files to an email address , but it does the trick for regular ol' work, etc.

Becky, be aware that flash drives do have a limited life. They're great for moving files and as a secondary backup, but if you constantly access them, the drive can eventually start failing. Multiple writes are the killer.

If you're going to be "working" on the drive, a USB hard drive is a better, albeit more expensive and larger, option.

Thanks Kelly. I do realize they have a limited life, but since I'm on one computer most of the time, I also use them very little. And all my important files are in three locations to cover me in case of HD failure, flash drive failure and even a fire or flood that destroys ALL the computers and drives.

        Hi Kelly,

My flash drive hasn't failed yet, but when it does...

Will it fail all at once, or gradually?

How will I know when it's starting to die?

The problem with a usb or hard drive is that when I'm at work, I wouldn't be able to transfer anything as they've disabled our usb ports.

  • Invest in a high capacity Flash Drive. I'm using a 16gb Sandisc I picked up for less than $40

You can get a 64gb at Newegg from different vendors for less than $150 bucks. Pay a bit extra for the faster drives. Store you data on the flash and then back it up to one of your hard drives.

No need to waste time uploading and downloading to an online service.

    Flash rocks!

And there is a reason your USB is disabled at work. You owe it to your employer to work for them when you are on the clock. You don't think they would monitor data transfer to an off site facility?

I appreciate your help, but about this:

And there is a reason your USB is disabled at work. You owe it to your employer to work for them when you are on the clock. You don't think they would monitor data transfer to an off site facility?
...now that's totally none of your business.

With my hosting(hostgator) I have unlimited space so I just upload all my work files to one of my domains. I simply create a folder and upload all my work files so I can download what I need from any pc I'm on. I then go to that url and can download what I need.

Someone mentioned DropBox which I use as well.

Another option that I use is PogoPlug (Not affiliated in any way). It is a small device that you plug into the wall and plug a network cable into it. You can connect a USB drive or drives to it and access it from anywhere with an internet connection just like DropBox. I pre-ordered before release and had some issues with the Windows software and the iPhone software initially, but they are getting better over time. Also, I have never had problems with the browser based interface.

I use Dropbox - Home - Secure backup, sync and sharing made easy. now...

It's a must for not only sharing files with your own computers,
but also sharing with freelancers and things getting outsourced (if you
    choose to)

You literally drag and drop into a folder and it's automatically shares
with your other computers, plus it's free

edit: It looks like it has already been mentioned... but seriously, it's
really good and you should check it out!
