Is it better to install WordPress manually?

I was about to install WordPress using Softaculous when I heard someone suggest it's better to do the install manually. Is this true? What are the advantages to a manual install, if any?

  • Rather than rewrite what I've written about this before, you can read an entire discussion where we talked about exactly this issue:

    • Personally, I have never been afraid to use the one-click install and I have created hundreds of WP sites.

I'm guessing that those that suggest to do the manual install fear security breaches given the automatic database and password creation as potential "doors" into the web site.

If you have those concerns, those names and passwords can easily be modified after the site is set up.

I think if you have been smart about your user name and password (as in don't use "admin" and "12345" etc) you won't have problems.

To me, the bigger issue is the security of plug-ins once your site is created.

      Just my opinion,

      Steve

  • I have never used softaculous, however, I can tell you it is really simple to install wordpress manually. Just download it, add your SQL infos to the config file, upload it all and call open it in the browser.
    That is most likely it.

However, I do not see that its really superior to an auto-install, if the auto-install does a clean installation of the newest version.

Edit: Also change the file-permissions of the upload folder if you do it manually, so the webserver can write there (and therefore wordpress can upload stuff)
  • Installing WP from Cpanel using softaculous will help you save time. Why need to install manual? Most hosting provide Cpanel access. I never bother install WP manually even I know how to do it. There are many things you should focus on rather than spending too much time bout WP installation.
  • It doesn't make any diffference. Softacluos just makes it easier. Why should you install it manually?

    • I think previously, the auto installers used a default wp_ prefix which is less secure, but now in the installation setup they give you an option to change it, so you don't use the default prefix.
  • I prefer the one click installs, just a time saver.. but I do change some of the default settings, like the DB name, for additional security.
  • I've used one-click installs for years but the QuickInstall feature in hostgator's cpanel DEFINITELY adds crap to your install. I'm guessing some of the other 1-clickers do too.

I've switched to doing it manually and, maybe I'm imagining things, but it DOES appear to run much better. I will never go back to one-click installs. Once you get used to installing manually, it only takes an extra few minutes anyway. So why not do a clean, uncrapified install?
  • I've done both the automatic and the manual. Now you can even rename the database on the automatic the only thing is the user I think so there is not much difference, and since i have many new WP sites all the time for niches then I like the automatic. But that's me.
