Recommendation>Speech Recognition Software for Vista?

Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing speech recognition software. I am using Windows Vista.Can anyone recommend some software that is compatible?

Also do I need a microphone or a headset or both?

Please advise.

    the only way to go in my opinion is with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. It is absolutely the best speech recognition software on the market, and it works perfectly with Windows Vista.

    It comes with a headset, but you want to go ahead and invest in a USB headset. That will make the speech recognition so much better.

    Yes, Dragon Naturally Speaking is the only way to go. With Vista (64 bit) you need the latest version (10 or 10.1) as the older versions won't work on Vista.

    Biggest thing is, do NOT skip the training of the program!

    You need to read some text that the program has to get the software to calibrate to YOUR voice.
    Speak normally. Don't slow down thinking it will be better.
    Input any unusual words into the library and it will get better with use.

    You can also use a portable recording device and load that file into it.
    You will need to train it for that as well.
    Just read the same text once into the portable recorder and you select a new voice.

    My Sansa MP3 player records voice,a bit crappy sound but, I use it for notes when away, load it into Dragon later and it transfers it to a text file. Works wonderful.
    Super sweet software.

      Hi Greg,

      I installed and am using Dragon 9.5 Preferred on Vista 64-bit and it is working. I was thinking about upgrading to 10 but I never got it to work great for me on XP. This thread made me drag it back out and try it again.

    Vista versions higher than basic have windows speech rec built right in. It works fantastic, but it doesn't allow you to import an existing file and render recognition against it like the most recent versions of DNS.

    If you don't wanna export the content yourself the I recommend that you go with the Windows Vista built in Speech Recognition Software. To see if you have it just go to:

    Start > Control Panel > Speech Recognition Options.

    and yes you need a microphone for it to work. Check and see if your computer comes with a built in microphone or not (a lot of them do).
