How do you measure your success?

I don't know about you, but in the beginning, I measured my success against how well I was doing vs. others in my company. Frankly, it made me upset, frustrated and like a failure. I hated reading facebook and seeing all the "success".

Now that I have been in this for a while, I have a new perspective. I am thankful to this business though because it has made me peel back the onion and be proud of myself even in months where things are fabulous. I think this is a marathon, not a sprint. Not all months are going to go my way, and that is OK!

How do you measure your success? What traps have you fallen into?

Hi Rachael! Welcome to the forum.

    1. I measure my personal success by how happy I am.

    2. I measure my financial success by the amount of freedom I have to pick up and go wherever I want after all the bills have been paid, and the emergency fund and maintenance funds have been accounted for.

Traps - Losing my drive through complacency.

      That's Wisdom

I personally measure it by how happy I feel when I wake up. And I tend to compare how I'm doing today with how I was doing in the past. No point in comparing yourself with others that are way ahead or way behind you.

All will agree that everyone has to measure his success by how happy his customers (viewers, visitors) are.
But the truth is that it has become a tradition (and it's not bad) to measure success by the amount of money we have in our bank accounts.
Success = money, this is the rule of 21-st century.

I measure my success by the amount of free time that i have for myself everyday. Typically you want to reach a point where you can automate your online business enough that you can *literally* (if you wanted to) run the whole thing from your smartphone. Imagine how much free time you can have by doing this to your business.

Measuring anything requires that you have a standard or benchmark against which you compare where your are today with where you were previously.

If you just guess, or just assume you're doing better or worse, you don't really know, you're just trusting your instinct.

Successful businesses set goals, measure objectively against those goals, then assess why they reached their goals or under-performed.

Set whatever goals and benchmarks you want ... but then be religious in tracking and recording your progress (or lack of it).

    Remember the three T's ...

Test - then track - then tweak. Do it over and over until you are optimized!

The point is ... you set your own standards, but then be relentless in holding yourself accountable. Be objective and honest to yourself as fudging your numbers just so you can say you reached your goals is hurting your business.

I go by the numbers. They don't lie!

Send some quality, targeted traffic and measure your conversions. For me today its a multiple phase process.

First the lead, then the open rates and then the sales that come in.

Measuring your success solely on how well others do is a recipe for disaster.

Everyone has their own unique circumstances and as such, it's impractical to compare yourself to others too much.

I like Tony Robbins' definition of success because it's based on what YOU want:

"Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want." - Tony Robbins

Seriously! when you compare yourself to others, you only feel bad!!!! It has taken me a long time to realize I have to focus on how I am improving. Not how others are doing.

I measure my success by the number of things i achieve for that day that i would have set out to accomplish for the day. I usually create a list every morning of all the things i need to accomplish for that day, so the more the things i achieve on the list at the end of each day the more i feel i am successful.

"Success it is the main tasty in our life" - my sport teacher!
I agree with it, and I think that the best feelings of your satisfied can be only after yours fails! It is very difficult to realize "why is it", but it is the part of success! Of course, you must be honest with yourself and work hard every time, from tears, from your needs and from everything, and be sure YOU WILL BE THE BEST! I know a lot of talented people in sport, but most of them, don't need to be the one, and they lost their possibility to develop themself!

Measuring your success with others is the worse thing you can do.
This is all about you, not the people around you.
I think that the key to success is evolution, or at least that is how I measure my success.
You don`t have to do better or worse than others, you just have to do better than you were doing the week/month/year before.

It's true, you'll never be content if you compare yourself to others - there'll always be someone else who's doing better than you.

And then there's the problem that to effectively compare yourself to others, you would literally have to have identical situations, i.e. same IQ, same education, same opportunities, same skills, etc. which is obviously never going to happen.

You are right again, and I found that when you focus on whatever you want to do, you simply stop thinking, let alone comparing yourself to others.

Well, I set a goal for myself and then try to achieve it. I don't set very specific goals because I don't think that's realistic, but I almost always have an idea of where I want to get at. If I fail, I "go back to the drawing board" and try to come up with a better plan. Seems to be working so far.

I try not to think about success. Success brings failure and failure brings success in the world of duality. So I try to stay away from both. I emphasize try because that's all I can do in life, try.

In my experience, there is really no way to tell the difference between success and failure, good fortune and bad fortune.

This reminds me of the story about the Taoist Farmer:

This farmer had only one horse, and one day the horse ran away. The neighbors came to condole over his terrible loss. The farmer said, "What makes you think it is so terrible?"

A month later, the horse came home--this time bringing with her two beautiful wild horses. The neighbors became excited at the farmer's good fortune. Such lovely strong horses! The farmer said, "What makes you think this is good fortune?"

The farmer's son was thrown from one of the wild horses and broke his leg. All the neighbors were very distressed. Such bad luck! The farmer said, "What makes you think it is bad?"

A war came, and every able-bodied man was conscripted and sent into battle. Only the farmer's son, because he had a broken leg, remained. The neighbors congratulated the farmer. "What makes you think this is good?" said the farmer...

Success is your duty, obligation and responsibility!

You can measure it by the amount of action that you take and the amount of time it took to take these actions.

Success is not a destination though. It's collection of its own. Grass example: you may have repaired, cut and make your grass look good and green again, but you have to maintain it. If you stop, that grass goes dying again...

I feel obliged to tell you: track whatever you can, even if you think it might not quite be relevant right now.
If you're not tracking it, you can't measure it.

Sure, right now you might think you don't need it. But trust me, there will be a time when it will come in handy.
It's also about making sure the data you're measuring is easy to find.

Whether it's PPC or email newsletter it is worth creating a simple spreadsheet to track who you contact and the results of that at the beginning of your campaign

    Measure Success

    1. Doing what you love and loving what you do

    2. Serving more people

    3. Gaining recognition

    4. Achieving your goals

    5. How much you look forward to tomorrow

In the beginning, definitely NOT in dollars. If you do that, you'll give up way before seeing any meaningful success.

For beginners, a good measure of success is knowledge.

Spend some time learning first. That will make the whole process way easier in the long run.

How do I measure my success?

I measure success on many levels...

Setting goals and being able to meet them (or not) reveals levels of success (or not)

Do I enjoy what I do? Can I support myself financially doing what I'm doing?

Am I able to give back to others?

...These are some of the questions I take into consideration when measuring my success.

    Hi Rachael,

One of the best definitions I have ever heard for Success: The progressive realization of a worthwhile goal.

You literally cannot have success without first having a goal.

So many people fail simply because they have never bothered to set a goal.

The best goals are specific (not vague or ambiguous), metric based (measurable), date based (time-bound), value based (worthwhile).

I define success in how much I can do in a day.

do nothing, you feel apothetic, but sit down and get lots of stuff done in a 12 hour period, that is what winners are made from, as long as you are not checking email and goofing off on youtube, has to be stuff that adds to your busienss like content, videos, course, pdf, learning material.

so when you ask yourself did you have a successful day, its more about, did you do lots of stuff that will add to your business and income tomorrow. If the answer is yes, success will come, if not.....get your ass back to work.
