hiring vs freelancing

when n how do you decide freelancing or hiring (employee) to do a job?

What do you consider, out of the 'full job volume' n salary/ fix monthly cost for the employee?

    I only hire people on a fixed price basis for the project.

    For example, if I need a high quality 1,000 word article written I might pay about $50 for it, regardless of the time taken to complete the project (once it isn't delayed too much).

    Hiring people by the hour can work, though it tends to be inefficient because of the fact that those you hire aren't going to make more money with a shorter work time (it's actually the opposite).

    The rule of thumb, in general, is that if you need someone to help you consistently, it's cheaper and better to hire such a person. Otherwise, just pay a little extra for a freelancer once in a while and you won't have to deal with all the hustle of having employees.

    I always go with fixed rates for each specific task. I've never had any major problems doing that. I name the project, they name their price (usually) and they'll do the work. Both parts are satisfied.

      If there are good communication between the 2 sides both freelancing and hiring. Then there is no problem at all and work done neatly.

    The salary option absolutely not, for ME. For others maybe. I typically outsource for graphics only. No salary need to be given to a person to do this.

      With an employee you are liable for taxes and withholding, not so with a freelancer or someone you hire as an independent contractor on an hourly basis.

      Hourly works if both sides are unsure of the scope of the project. For an example, most attorneys work on an hourly basis because neither they nor the client are sure of how long the case will take.

      Our consulting company has worked both an an hourly basis and a set fee basis. For example, a client may want to hire us to give critique his business planning strategies that would be on an hourly basis, say 6 hours at $120 an hour paid up front.

      If the client wants us to assist in the creation of a marketing plan that would be on a fixed project basis.
