Who Wins Most Business?

The one thing.

I was asked recently, whilst speaking on stage, if I would sum up in one sentance what i've learned most from my years of online and ecommerce experience. So I did:

The Best Marketer Wins!

Not the business with the best product...
Not the business with the largest budget...
Not the business with the most people...
Not the business with the greatest experience...
Not the business with the biggest network...
Not the business with the best planning...
Not the business who wants it most...

The Best Marketer Wins!

Good luck with your ventures.

Reading your post is like kissing your sister.

Yea, a kiss is great . . . but from your sister? What is so exciting about that?

What you've stated is the obvious.

What we need to hear now is what does this mean? Who is the best marketer? What qualities, practices, characteristics, methods, does being the best marketer entail?

Jaime Lannister might be able to tell you what's exciting about that.

On a serious note, as Steve also pointed out, the devil is in the details.

There are so many variables that might determine what makes a "good marketer", such as understanding the target audience, communicating effectively, and knowing how to best reach them.

      Regards,

I'm afraid you've missed the point.

The point i'm making is about overall business perspective not the detail of one aspect of it (and, as i said, I only had one sentence to sum it all up).

On the one hand you are, of course, correct. For many of us it's obvious that marketing is king. Except it isn't. Not really, at least for a large number of business owners.

We forget. We get distracted. We get tired. It then somehow becomes hidden within plain sight.

I've had the pleasure of advising a lot of business owners in the ecommerce space over the years. I can tell you that if you mapped out what it is they do daily, where they spend the most time, where they expend the most effort, it isn't on marketing. It's on the hundreds of other activities that go into running an ecommerce business.

Yet if you asked them if marketing was the most important issue virtually all of them would respond, as you have, saying of course it is.

Understanding and action are not one and the same. Often they are very different. That's my point.

      The best marketer wins.

      ==================

The point you are making is not invalid, just not the one i'm making.

To address your point, at the next level down from my strategic perspective, I would say that, in ecommerce, what often defines the best marketer is effectively carrying out activities based around one of 3 main income generating approaches:

      1. Increasing the size of your product portfolio
      2. Increasing the number of customers
      3. Increasing the average order value of each customer.

How you do this is, of course, a separate set of issues and depends strongly upon circumstance. But, in general, the more you skilfully invest up front the faster the journey will be.

      Good luck with your venture.

I guess not. The best marketer may contribute to the success of a business, but at the end of the day consumers will look at the quality of your product.

I think you missed my point.

Of course quality of product counts. However markets are full of examples where the best quality does not 'win' but the best marketer does. They are everywhere, hence the best marketer wins.

Eg Vimeo and YouTube. Vimeo is far superior in quality yet YouTube 'wins' hands down in terms of income. Purely because they have the greatest marketing reach and power.

      Good luck with your venture.

I think there is a lot of Truth in what Zany says.

You can literally have someone who has an adequate Product who blows the hell out of a Marketer with a superior Product because they have set up a Marketable system that is in fact superior to the guy with the superior
        product
