What's your best blogging tip? I'll kick it off with...

Hey guys,

I've seen many threads lately about blogging and wordpress so I
wanted to start a thread giving some great blogging tips for
newer bloggers to help them with their business. It could be
tricks, best plugins, themes, list building, commenting, link
building, how to get 1k visitors in 2 days, whatever!

I'll start...

7 ways to keep your blog super sticky and make your readers keep
coming back for more...

1) "Blog eye candy"

I've always believed in keeping your blog appealing to the eye.
Whether you hire a designer to create a theme for you, or you use
a premade theme directly from wordpress or any of the hundreds of
other places you can find free themes.

2) "The magic of a good headline"

Headlines are extremely important guys! Just like on regular
salesletters... The same principles apply to blogs! I can't tell
you how many times I see boring headlines that DO NOT speak to
me, and I usually end up leaving... Use action words that trigger
emotional responses like:

* Before you forget...
* Deadline
* Limited
* Seize
* While it's fresh on your mind...
* Blissful
* Delightful
* Jubilant
* Rave
* Thrilled
* Agony
* Floundering
* Helpless
* Paralyzed
* Surrender
* Banned
* Controversial
* Exposed
* Insider
* Taboo
* Avenge
* Payback
* Reclaim
* Turn the tables
* Vindication
* Burned
* Conspiracy
* Disinformation
* Fleece
* Swindle
* Had enough?
* Never again...
* Pointless
* Temporary fix
* Tired
* Arrogant
* Cruel
* Greed
* Hate
* Unscrupulous
* Bright
* Destiny
* Empower
* Overcome
* Undo
* Boost
* Cure
* Energize
* Flush
* Vibrant

You get the point, right? Using a headline that jumps out at the
readers will make them actually read your content, and stay
longer!

3) "Ads Ads Ads!"

Ugh... Nothing bugs me more than a blog full of ads above the
fold. I understand you're trying to monetize the site, believe
me, I do. I too am a marketer. But for Pete's sake, you're going
to lose me if that's all I see on your site!

I want quality content... Give me something other than banner ads
in your sidebar!

4) "What did he/she just write about? I'm confused..."

I was reading an affiliate marketing blog the other day that went
on and on and on about traveling the world. And, not just one
post! I counted 9 posts in the span of 2 months...

It wouldn't have been so bad if he actually tied it into
marketing. But I couldn't make it out whatsoever... Guess what I
did. CLICK... "Next!".

Keep things targeted. If you're trying to be personal to your
readers, I'm all for that. But keep in mind that people want to
actually read about the topic your blog is about, mm k?

5) "Gimme some friggin' options dude!"

We're in the 21st century. We don't want to keep coming back to
your blog every single day to see if you posted new content that
we MIGHT be interested in.

Give them options to receive your content! RSS, email, twitter,
etc... And/or all the above!

Some people don't like, want or even know how to use RSS feeds.
Nor do they care. Give them more options and you'll have more
people coming back, guaranteed!

6) "Social proof = loyal readers!"

Social proof is an amazing thing. When you do get visitors, make
sure you get them commenting on your posts. In fact, use
comment
prompt
to bug your visitors to submit their comments! The
more comments you get, the more COMMENTS YOU GET. Get it?

And be sure to participate in your blogs comments. You'd be
surprised at how loyal your subscribers get when you actually
answer questions and be apart of the commenting community!

Believe it or not, people actually read comments and usually like
to chime in with their opinions and questions, thus making your
site ultra sticky...

7) "Ugh... This. Is. Boring. ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz..."

Stop with the boring stuff already! Have you ever noticed how
interesting and personal blogs seem to be a little more popular?
It's because they aren't boring!

Make your posts interesting, fun, entertaining, and your readers
will always come back for more. Make people laugh, make people
cry, piss people off (but not too much)... People love it and
will want to know what you'll be writing next.

The stickier your blog is, the more people will follow you... The
more loyal of a fan base you have, the more money you'll make in
the end. True story!

Let see what kind of goodies we can get on here warriors!

Whatcha got?

    Hey Jason,

    I believe in personality marketing. So, I believe that a blogger should show his or her personalities in his or her blog posts.

    8) Backlinks

    These are a vital component of any site.. but I pay extra attention to getting good backlinks for my niche blogs.. (my I.M. blogs can go without.. don't want you sneaky monsters seeing all the good stuff )..

    High authority sites and portals for strong backlinks..

    Peace

        My best tip is to target everything you do with your blog towards the desired action you're hoping your visitors to take while/after they read it.

        If you've got a niche blog where you're promoting a certain offer/s, the layout, the way the content's written, and monetization has to all be geared towards having them click through and take up that offer.

        But if you're trying to develop the best content, establish yourself as an authority in a niche, or have people subscribe to your feed for more, that writing style, layout, and monetization has to be done totally differently.

        I have blogs where I'll be upset if my reader is looking around for where to subscribe to my RSS feed - coz they're not clicking my affiliate links! I have blogs where I don't want loyal readers, I want them to get to my blog one time, and click through to take up the offer I'm pushing because I know it's targeted to the problem they're trying to solve.

        My point is the tips have to be related to your goal with the blog.

        Blogs can serve so many purposes and before putting one up, you have to know why you're doing so (sounds simple but lots of people don't).

    How does removing the dates improve a blog? (I know, but
    many people probably don't)

    I also agree with Andrew alot. You definitely want to have a
    vision with your blog.

    Are you wanting them to follow you and have a loyal fan base?
    Are you wanting them to subscribe to your list?
    Are you wanting them to click your Adsense ads?
    Are you wanting them to buy your products/services?

    What is the blogs goal... And focus on that aspect of it.

    Great stuff guys... What else?

    Install the free widget from fidjit (.com). It shows in real time who is visiting your website, from where, and even which keywords they searched in order to reach your site. Fascinating to look at, and when I see the search terms my visitors are using, it gives me ideas about which search terms I should be "pushing" to get higher rankings.

    I like the idea of having articles pointing at a blog post for example top ten adsense tips then creating an article for each of these ten tips and have it pointing at the blog post. The traffic for it is amazing.

    kind regards
