Not looking for pity, just advice

Hello, I recently lost my job. My department was being downsized and with me being the newest guy (hired a year ago), I was the first to cut.

I have been dabbling in online marketing and other ways to make money online but have failed miserably over the past year. I do have the entrepreneurial mind-set and that's what keeps me searching.

I have a wedding coming up in a few months and these recent events have really put a lot of stress on my relationship. I feel miserable and terrible that I have basically left my fiance to hold the bag for us. I have just a little money left coming in from a cashed out 401k, but that money is being used to pay the bills.

I'm sitting here, asking strangers for help. I never thought it'd come to this but I know there are still good people out there with good intentions.

I've been on at least 3 interviews since last Friday (my last day at work) and really need to get some of this weight off of my shoulders.

Could someone please lend some advice or if I'm lucky enough for someone to lead me in the right direction, I would be forever indebted.

Thanks so much in advance.

    Hey Dev,
Take consolation that we all at one point in our Lives have been thru similar circumstances. It ain't fun but will only make you stronger down the road.

The best thing I could say is please keep interviewing. And do this IM at night and on weekends.

Do NOT stop looking for a job. Secure one and like I said you can build up a business in the Online World over time.

Not sure how much you have left , but I would advise that you do not drain all that 401K.

In your off hours it would not hurt to come in here and absorb some info. from some of the long time, reputable Members.

    Lots of good stuff.

But please maintain your employment and have that stability of a full time job coming in
You owe that to your fiance and to yourself

Go with what Robert said. It could take you several months to earn anything at all online and it sounds like you need something more quickly. We've probably all had moments like this in our adult lives so it's nothing to be ashamed of - at least you're exploring options!

I don't know what area of the world you're in but I recently encouraged (shoved) my 18 year old son into blasting resumes online through job classified sites and he was able to find something in a couple of weeks. A decent starter job in an office with reasonable pay. Something is better than nothing, right?

There's a good index thread here: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ate-index.html. That will also lead you to the forum's notable "What to do if you're desperate" thread. Both posts may give you inspiration and ideas.

      Good luck!

Forget about internet pipe dreams. You should be doing the following and only the following:

    1. Hunt relentlessly for a Job in your industry/profession. You might have to find something else outside your specialty, but the idea is that you need full time work with benefits.

    2. Pick up odd jobs and part time work wherever you can. (bartending, delivery, chauffeur, larborer, bouncing, etc) You have to be willing to do any kind of work as long as it's legal and ethical. Drug dealing and working the corner are bad ideas, but suck up your pride and do whatever else it takes to make ends meet and get back on your feet.

I suggest you look for another job or anything that could give you additional cash while you start with affiliate marketing which I highly recommend. Building an online business takes time so you have to have some cash to pay the bills while you establish a profitable online business as another stream of income.

    Get your next job.

You really have to get the "story" out of your head...employers don't want desperate people in their organizations. It's "employment repellent."

Do this: DECIDE to get your next job by a certain date.

    Decide.

Then do the actions necessary to get that job.

People are hiring. Jobs are abundant, especially if you can travel a bit. Show how you create value for an organization and people will make room.

But the first key thing for you to do is get out of your own head. You're beating yourself, right now.

I was in a similar situation. I just learnt SEO quickly and offered my service on guru.com. I quoted low in the beginning and got orders real fast.

My advice, a real job in your profession as others have suggested or if you want to earn money fast in IM, just offer any service (SEO, Article writing etc...).

I wish you all the best. I am sure you will do well soon.

Keep doing what you know you can do and part time learn about how to make money with this tool of the internet. Personally I want something I am in full control over. Even the traffic. You really should set aside marketing budget and let your money work for you.

You need to be able to send enough traffic daily to see steady resuls that you can scale with or work on...

At first, I seemed to take on board what you posted (re people not using the search feature for similar questions) but the lack of helpful response from you prompted me to click on your username and select 'more posts ...' and to my dismay found that out of 50 posts in March 2016, alone, the vast majority of your responses to genuine member concerns were negative one liners.

That's such a shame given that this forum's strength used to lie and I hope it still does, in helping others less knowledgeable, less experienced, less confident than you or I.

Is this how you increase your post count? I trust not. And another thing. Could you not find a more inspiring quotation than the one attached to the signature bar?

That's just too bad and I sympathise.

I'd agree with what others have suggested - get another job and do your online marketing part-time until it starts to produce the result that you want.

Google search "xxx job vacancies in xxxx" (eg: "sales vacancies in London" or "IT vacancies in Birmingham")
Visit each and every company website listed in the Google results
    Check the vacancies they have
Register with recruitment agencies for temporary/permanent work
Apply direct to companies (submit your CV)
If no suitable vacancy, send your CV/Resume in speculatively with your application letter addressed to the HR department or even to a named person within the company.

Avoid sob stories - no one, unfortunately, wants to know - just stick to facts - your qualifications, experience and what you are able to offer your prospective employers.
Then check out sites that give free advice on interview techniques so that you are better placed to do a good job when you get invited to attend an interview.
Be positive and enthusiastic. It may take you a little time to find the right job but you will find something so long as you are determined and persevere.

And another thing, when you do get the interview and are asked why you were made redundant, don't be apologetic. Simply state that the company had to cut back and that you were last in and first out. Don't elaborate.

Whatever you do, don't attempt to answer any question as to WHY your company needed to downsize, even if you know that they are about to go bust! It would be a very bad move.

As an executive search consultant, I did not put a highly qualified and suitable candidate (a Chartered Accountant) forward for a FD position because when I asked why he wanted to move from his current job, he said "I give the company less than three months to fold".

A prospective employer (or a consultancy acting on behalf of their client) will wonder if you are indiscreet about or disloyal to your current/previous employer, you would be the same with them. So no matter how suitable for the job you might be, your application would fail.

    Good luck.

    Jamie

Looks like you have some decent writing skills. If you want to earn some money quickly, check out textbroker.com and iwriter.com

Also any freelancing sites such as elance.com and freelancer.com

It's all about exchanging value for money. Find problems to solve, and solve them by selling products and services.

Get a job man. Any job just as long as it starts paying the bills. Sometimes when the job that we want isn't available right now, we have to settle for something less desirable.

IM will not work for you while you are desperate for income.

The 'Entrepreneurial Mindset' can be aquired over time. Take care of today now and later on when your financial house is back in order, you can resume.

      Great post Rory.I agree 100%.

You need to have an income coming in while you try to figure online marketing out. When I was younger I quit my job to do internet marketing full time, but I was not making any money from internet marketing.

The pressure just builds up, and it is very intense, when no money is coming in.

It is better do do your I.M stuff when you get home from work, and if it doesn't make money for a while, at least you are under no financial pressure.

that means you are great able to withstand the pressure and this Pressure indeed push you.

I do know some individuals ..is the Pressure and stress that make them work even harder to success.

Have you ever tried Ebay or Fiverr? You should start there to get some immediate revenue going. Both are work at home sources of income, but they're the fastest and easiest way to get going - even if you have limited dough (ebay in particular). I suggest these instead of building and marketing your own website because there's alot to learn, and within that timeframe, you could be earning some sales and income coming in from the easy sites like ebay and Fiverr.

Jason made a great point about seeming desperate. Like the old ad said, never let 'em see you sweat.

Same for all the others. Find a job, even if it's not the job. I once spent a summer scraping adhesive residue from a factory floor at night to keep the bills paid. Spent another stint taking orders at a catalog company. Sucky work, but the checks did the trick.

When you have cash flow, you have options. You don't have to chase low-paying gigs on Fiverr or writing articles at sweat shop pay. You can pick a business idea and take the time to do it properly. There's a lot of power that comes from having options.

People here try to give helpful advice to a new person....but increasingly we are reading these "help me" threads as the FIRST post by a member....who never comes back to read the answers.

The OP hasn't logged in here since he left one minute after posting his plea for help.

I wonder why that is happening so much recently....

I wonder if it's because they get the advice they asked for, rather than the pity or rah-rah speeches they really wanted.

Another possibility, though, is that the forum seems to log people out when they leave lately. At least, I've had to log back in every time I come back. If the OP, and others like them, are simply monitoring the thread without logging in, it won't show up.

You always could read the threads, at least in the main forum, without logging in. You just couldn't post. I have a hunch that explains a lot of the folks who register, post and then never log back in.

A number of people have already said this, but focus on getting your next job before anything else.

Even if it is not the perfect job, just get yourself working again to bring in some income.

Once that's taken care of, spend your spare time on IM. Pick one area of IM, eg. list building, and give it 100%... don't jump around from one thing to another.

Finally, remember, that everything that happens, every failure, is one step closer to success. Be positive, and every area of your life gets better.
