What to replace Traffic Exchanges and Safelists with?

I am wondering what to replace traffic exchanges and safelists with. I have used these for over 12 years. In the beginning there was some results but in the last 8 years, very little at all. I am convinced they are a type of marketing "porn" -- giving people the illusion of something without any of the relationship benefits.

The kind of marketing that I am looking for would be the same "non-stress" button clicking type activities that would be heavy on the affiliate benefits -- that is, if you bring in others, you don't have to pay for the marketing involved. I can use pre-written ad copy and paste in various places without any kind of spamming involved

I also am good at SEO on a number of sites but I am also hoping to have some public involvement during the process if possible. Doing SEO on various websites is fairly isolated work

Social avenues like Facebook as well as Blog Commenting and Guest Posting can be good. Also Forum Marketing can be somewhat effective.

I'm sorry but no one knows what traffic exchanges and safelists are. They are also
routinely dishonest and even "abusive" in the way they treat people. To top it off, they
often disappear after a few years.

No one knows about these sites. They are filled with get rich for sure or quick companies ads or ads for other traffic exchanges. There are almost no products sold there except MLM companies.

You can always make money if you are willing to sell these kinds of get rich quick products or if you can sell advertising. It's very sad that so many people have been duped by any form of these companies. It didn't have to be this way, but no one with any cross advertising muscle ever gave the platform any real world exposure (like major media telling people about these kinds of sites and what they do).

All numbers of 5,000 or more active users are routinely dishonest. The scary thing is that I think over 90% of these sites have under 50 active users and thus there is no real market. You can see the ones that have more open numbers exposed (some auto surf sites) and they show an average of about 20 users.

SEO, Email Marketing and Social Networking sites might be a good option to replace your existing traffic sources. These are one of the effective ways to drive quality traffic to your site.

Don't use them at all. Replace them with free time for yourself and your family. Or if you want a more *tangible* solution.... replace them with targeted paid advertising. I would start with Bing Ads and Google Adwords. Just make sure you don't overbid, and that you have a funnel that will help you to get your money back quickly.

If it were that easy everyone would be rich.

Participating in forums can be a good alternative. Other ways being blog commenting and being active in social media.

Thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate it. I really didn't get the technical side of the answer that I am looking for, and have been busy releasing a new book and doing many other things that I haven't really looked into the answer myself.

I think what I'm looking for is a marketing plan that takes minimal reinvention every day to maintain. If you're like me, doing a lot of creative things, there is a time during the day you want to stop that part of the brain and just do some key clicking type stuff.

If anyone's suggestion was pointing to that, could they spell out a little of the technical practice involved?

For instance, the technology behind traffic exchanges and safelists was really a breakthrough and could have been huge, but there just wasn't the "charitable altruism" on the side of big players to educate the public about it. And, the owner's of such exchanges are not big enough thinkers, (and here is where I get to use that great expression for the first time in my life) but are content to pick "lower hanging fruit."
