Purchasing opt-in Mailing Lists

I've recently come across quite a few websites selling targeted mailing lists.

What are everyones opinions on this?

    The best mailing list you can have is one that you build yourself. And double opt-in is the safest route to go. You don't know how targeted those "targeted" mailing lists are and you don't know how safe they are as far as spamming goes. If you build your own list you know you have a group of people who are genuinely interested in what YOU have to offer. It's a virtual gold mine. If you want to know how to build your list PM me.

    Inexperienced marketers will pay for a mailing list but the advice given above is the best....

    The best lead is the one you generate via your website or squeeze page...

    Even though I am brand new to all of this, I think that it would be much better to build your own list. The way that I have been told to do this is by building a landing page with an opt in box that is linked to a "thank you" page that has a link to the product page. I have an example that I built not to long ago. The url is succesinfosystem.com. I haven't been doing ppc, just writing articles and submitting them. Yeah I understand that that is the slow way, but when you are low on funds what else can you do? If anyone has any good advice then please let me know!

      While it's certainly best to build your own list, the problem is it can a long time and cost money (PPC and other ads) to draw traffic to your landing page.

      What if you had an awesome product - like a home based business that costs $10 and can yield $14k - and you want to contact thousands or even millions of people who fit the target demographic? Well, mailing lists might be a gamble, but that's the only way you can target so many.

      Think about this: Even if you only get 20% open rate on a 100k mailing, and of those 20k opens you get 1% response, that's still 200 orders (1-in-500 response). For the same cost as it takes to rent and mail to a 100k list, how much does it cost to use PPC and convert 200 orders?

    The problem with purchasing a mailing list is that the list can be sold over and over and over again so these poor people are getting tons of emails all the time so your response rate is probably not going to be that good compared to building your own list.
