Quick Content Trick Using mTurk

Here's a quick way to cheaply create interesting reports. Use mTurk or other "micro job" site.

A micro job site is where you pay people a small fee to do a small task for you. In this example, you might go to mTurk and pay people a dollar or two to write something like:

-How you quit smoking

-How you potty trained your toddler

-Your favorite recipe from your Grandma

You pay 25 people a dollar or two to write a 1-2 paragraphs on the subject. Actually, you'll probably need around 30 to come up with a good 25 or so.

Now name your report something like "How 25 Moms Just Like You Potty Trained Their Toddler".

For around $30-$60 you have a good, solid, interesting report to sell or use as a "bribe" to like/share your page or as motivation to sign up for your email list.

You can also use it to repurpose the content...make it into a YT video, a podcast, turn it into a PDF and share it on ebook sites, make it into a Powerpoint presentation and share it on the doc sharing sites, etc.

Kurt's idea should work with website content, too.

I doubt you'll get anything decent from hiring one writer on mTurk. The money just isn't there for someone to create a whole blog post or article, but something short that a good writer can knock out during a commercial break sounds doable.

Of course, if you do find one or more writers that you like, it can't hurt to ask if you can hire them directly.

Yeah, just wondering about the quality.

And I'm not saying this is not a legit way to construct a free report.

I just know in the past I have done some things with writing services similar to this but the writing was so suspect I spent way more time editing and rewriting than I would if I just did it on my own

But I think this is worth looking into

The quality will be mixed, which is why I suggested getting 30 and probably only using 25 or so.

The key is to keep the gigs for each person short and personal. It's OK if their grammar isn't perfect. Actually, it's better if some of the stories/tips don't use perfect grammar.

It's really about having the stories from real people that will appeal to many.

You could do something similar with forums and social media to generate your content. A post on mums net asking for help would bring in a number of responses.

If you can find out what kind of social media presence responders have you can choose which responses to include. You'll then have 25 people within your niche reading to promote for you.

This could be a good idea...the issue will be about copyrights. You won't be able to just use posts without asking for permission to use them.

Two things that would stop me from doing this:

1- Generally these types of sites will own the copyright to the posts. They will tell you in their terms and conditions that anything you post of their site becomes their property. The fact that you paid for the answers to your questions has nothing to do with how you can use their content.

2- You have no idea whether you'll get duplicate content, someone posting something they found online after ripping it off from another web site, or a quote out of a book or magazine or a forum somewhere.

I'm not saying that either of these will be the case . . . but they could be . . . and as long as that possibility exists, you should be worried about copyright infringement.

      Hi Steve,

I'm not sure who your comments are directed at?

If they were meant for me...generally, the person paying for the content is the holder of the copyrights. I don't understand your legal theory that mTurk/Amazon would have the rights?

When creating the job you include that you have the rights and will be publishing the content. When I've posted jobs in the past for software development, I always included the phrase "I own any and all rights".

I wouldn't be too worried about them ripping it off. In short jobs like this, it's probably harder to actually search, copy/paste that to write a short paragraph or two about their own experiences. If they do, they are risking their mTurk account if caught.

Since there's so many pieces written by different people, how much time would be needed to edit or stitch the different pieces together so that the entire piece flows smoothly?

Wouldn't it be easier just to find a single writer whose willing to write the whole long article/mini report for you for the $30-60?

It would take about 10 minutes to copy/paste 25 items into a document, probably a lot less if you use a multi-clipboard such as Spartan Mutli Clip like I do. "Flow" is irrelevant, since it's from 25 different people.

Which do you think is better or more interesting? One mom telling you how to potty train a toddler or 25 moms telling you their stories?

It always amazes me how much time many people spend finding what's wrong with something instead of spending that same effort finding a solution.

Oh, I see what you mean. I seemed to have overlooked the "How 25 Moms Just Like You..." My bad.

I thought this was to create a single piece of content, as if it was written by a single person. But, your angle is that you're getting input from multiple people. In which case, this is a cool content trick.

For me it's simply a case of making a list article. Do a little bit of research to verify the information and depending on the article I might go social and do some gamificition with it.

Regarding the earlier query on permission I ask them to send me the info on email and have an online release form signed.

Most people are happy with this, especially as they get credited with the tip.

Pretty much and a writer who does research can get quotes too from real moms at a forum for that. You are likely to get half the people responding to mturk for $1 or $2 giving crappy advice.

Because, you know, you never get a crappy article from an inexpensive freelancer. LOL

BTW, I didn't suggest you ask them for advice. I suggested you ask them for a life story. Note the difference.

Nope I don't. not in the $30-$60 price range I was responding to and quoted. If you do you probably need a better process of hiring.

in my experience people write garbage for $1 or $2 regardless of story, advice etc. They just hammer something out they even made up. If you luck out good for you though. I'll go with what I know works since there's no savings going that route anyway and in fact actual good writers are very handy to keep around and keep invested..

Sorry, but you don't have any experience in this situation. You've never created, let alone tested, the effectiveness of using bits of info from 25 different sources using mTurk compared to one of your article writers.

And yes, many writers struggle with longer articles for low pay. However, it isn't nearly as difficult for people to write a paragraph or two about their own experiences. They don't have to struggle with ideas or research. And believe it or not, there's people that even write a few paragraphs for free. Just see this forum if you're in doubt.

Your suggestion of hiring a writer to "quote" people posting on forums is pretty bad on a number of legal, psychological and marketing levels. But I agree, it would be "easier".

You go with what works. Be sure to never test or try anything new because, you know, there's no room ever for improvement or a another way of doing things that could perform better in different circumstances.

Sorry but you have no way of knowing what experiences I have (unless you have been peering with binoculars through open curtains across the street at my screen - in which case there are more pressing issues for you to attend to). so its actually you , rather obviously, speaking from what you know nothing about. I have experience with low pay work systems. Tried them - Nothing magical about mturks converts low quality work to quality work

Your suggestion of hiring a writer to "quote" people posting on forums is pretty bad on a number of legal, psychological and marketing levels
No it isn't because you simply assumed without any logical foundation that the writer would not get the permission or not be the one to initiate the discussion and get permission. Are the psyche wards filled with journallsts because they ask people opinions and get permission to post them? ummm nope.

Be sure to never test or try anything new because, you know, there's no room ever for improvement or a another way of doing things that could perform better in different circumstances.
I don't have anything against new things and as I said if you lucked out and got some good stuff then fine but the $1 for a job equals great quality thesis has been tested and tried, the economics are against it and most people would do far better relying on whats tried and true than chasing down rainbows which work out to about the same cost anyway

You can find good article writers for the price you would have to pay mturks users $1- $2 each. so in the $30-$60 range and they would be required to write you something good and and get rewrites if necessary. If you develop a relationship with a writer you also have that connection for other writing work.

    Thanks Kurt,

I checked out Mturk and there are a lot of big companies using it to scale their workforce when required.

Have you looked at the "qualifications" part of the system where you can ask someone to complete a test to determine their suitability to work on a HIT.

Seems like you could set up a test once to quickly reduce the number of low quality applicants to undertake a task.

    Best regards,

Yes, it would be easier to hire a single writer. However, would it be more effective?

Which of the following do you think would perform better to get subscribers or shares:

The world's foremost parenting expert tells how to potty train your toddler...

      -or-

25 moms just like you share their secrets for how they potty trained their toddler...

This example assumes that a world-class parenting expert wrote the first article, which probably isn't the case. Even if an expert did write the first, I'd bet a coke the second headline would outperform the first. I could be wrong, but I like the odds.

If you want another angle on this idea, next time you go to the grocery store (at least in the USA) pick up a copy of Reader's Digest. You don't even have to buy it, just skim it while standing in line.

Along with the regular articles and digest versions of professionally written longer content, you'll find several very short anecdotes contributed by readers and wannabe writers. If you had permission to use these, it would be easy to collect these amateur submissions, edit them lightly, and use them in a collection.

Kurt's idea is along much the same lines, except he's saying to pay a couple of bucks for each submission, rather than gathering submissions and only paying for the ones used.
