How Do You Feel About Using Link Trackers?

Unless your ad has a capture page and your tracking system tracks conversions all you really know from the tracker is how many clicks an ad received. Now don't get me wrong, this can be useful information, but it's only half of the information. This is also where I was greatly fooled.

Many affiliate marketing sites now have tracking systems that show you what site your new referral signed up from. This was the case for me with ConversionSurf Traffic Exchange. I ran several ads, mostly on safelist mailers during a 1-2 week time frame and was pleased to see that I had gotten several new referrals. Here's where the problem comes in. The same site that I was using for my tracking system is also the same site I was using for advertising as well. So, I believed that all those new sign ups came from my ads on that site. I later came to learn they came from my trackers on that site and not the ads I placed there. Let me tell you, this turned out to be some pretty misleading information for me that could have led me down the wrong road had it not been for my friend, the admin at ConversionSurf explaining to me what was happening.

The bottom line here is that in cases where you are advertising sites that already provide quality conversion and referral stats, it may be best to use direct links and stay away from trackers. This is even more true if you are advertising from mailers where you can typically see how many opens you get from a particular mailing.

If you are advertising for sites or programs that do not provide this information you may want to stick with a tracker for your links.

If anyone has any information they can ad to this, I would love to hear your perspective.
