Down For Everyone Or Just Me?

You know I bet we all have some bookmarked websites that are totally free to use and helpful as hell when we need them.

This one for example....

Down For Everyone Or Just Me -> Check if your website is down or up?

It basically let's you know that you are not crazy and a site is temporarily down or not.

I am just curious as to why someone creates a website like this? No ads that I can see

USA Alexa Rank 1300. currently.

So what is the incentive for this to the owner?

I have been using it for years even when the WarriorForum used to go down on occasion.

Just wondering your thoughts Thanks.

Would you create a website like this?

If I can't pull up my own website then it is down.

Don't need another site to tell me.

That site is probably just collecting data. Or could just be a programmer with too much time on their hands.

Believe it or not, not everyone creates a website in an attempt to make money from it

The one I question the most is http://Loser.com. Whoever owns that could probably pawn that domain name off for $100k, yet they choose to just troll people by redirecting it to celebrities and politicians.

Which is really beautiful BranTheMan but...just one JV deal? Banner ad? A little one.

You do not know how to evaluate domains.

No company is going to say "you know what a great name for our new product is? Loser. Lets go buy Loser.com."

Hey guys guess what? I just bought my new Ford Loser, yeah! I love my loser! Haha, I know I'm a loser, you guys are funny!

      Never happening.

It's not junk but it's not worth 100k.

They'll get super lucky if some movie company wants to make a movie named loser, which nobody will ever go see unless it's a comedy. I still doubt they would pay 100k. I doubt losermovie.com is registered.

Lets be realistic about this, are they going to make an extra 100k because people have to type losermovie.com instead of loser.com? Google will send them to the right domain, which ever they buy.

Who ever owns that is doing exactly what I would be doing with it.

I can agree with that Nature123 and sometimes we are on the outside looking in and we do not see the bigger picture that is the part I am curious about.

I would say it is def worth some money if placed on market.

Thanks so much for the comment.

I was curious what you thought of Honest.com selling for what it did?

On a side note would love to know if you moved to Cayman Islands or born there?

Did you decide to move there for business purposes?

We can chat via PM on that if more appropriate. (or none of my damn business) Thanks.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, but Honest.com is worth between 5 and 20 times loser.com.

      To Tom Addams:

Caroline Westbrook is not a domain broker, she is not a lawyer, and I have absolutely no idea who Netristrar is, but a quick Google-ing of them doesn't make me believe this entity is a dominate force in the domain marketplace.

I don't know why UK media generally seem to be so uninformed, but that metro.co.uk, piece is almost entirely inaccurate.

Something tells me an editor said something a long the lines of "Kanye West, figure something out."

‘There are legal issues to consider,’ their spokesman points out. ‘If you’re redirecting to another person’s site it’s not just the technical issues you need to think about.
      /eyeroll /facepalm

I can think of a few ways to get the personal information of a person who is using private registration, trust me the owner of that is in no danger by linking to something.

Sometimes domains do sell for astronomically high amounts, but it's usually a situation where the owner is unwilling to sell and the domain is "not for sale."

      Also, https://flippa.com/5992318-retard-com

Think about what the person did with that domain (nothing.)

      And

what's going on with this being suspended etc., did someone report this domain as offensive?

Could have something to do with bids jumping from $7k to $61k due to Bidder #1 bidding against himself
Obviously the domain did exchange hands according to whois history, but I encourage you to disregard that sale when trying to evaluate domain names. Something weird happened there. It's very possible a person with a ton of money felt like doing something, well, you know, like massively overpaying for retard.com.

The rest of the domains you listed are great domains.

Off the top of my head:

    moron.com - $20,000
    nerdy.com - $60,000
    retard.com - $61,936
    ErectileDysfunction.com - $241,000
    Porker.com - $155,000

And those are the domain sales whose names are sufficiently inoffensive to post on WF.

The value of a domain is exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. I can think of many potential applications for Loser.com, and being somewhat aware of the domain buyers in those industries, I'd say loser could fetch mid-6 figures to 7.

You don't need to advertise anything on a site to increase its value for later sale. The traffic alone is valuable.

I can't remember the url, as it was mentioned to me 4 years ago, but I remember the company president I was working for at the time (a guy I'll readily admit is smarter than I am) giving me an example of a site that gave away great training content...built up the traffic...and sold for a million bucks. The buyers were buying the eyeballs that targeted traffic brought them.

Sorry I do not buy it Jason.

    Smarter than you?

But being Thanked over 6000 times by your colleages? Priceless brother.

Excellent point on the value of traffic thanks.

With companies like Acxiom selling data on everyone it should be assumed that monetisation of a website doesn't have to be obvious to be profitable.

If you want to read more about why data is valuable to companies you can start here:

Put a domain name in, and you'll get your answer on the next page. After you get your answer, you also get a link to an affiliate offer - hosting, when I tried it just now.

Very clever. Since they do provide a useful service, this might the kind of site "spammer math" works for.

Oh John you remind me of the Domain Valuation websites!

I once saw that Boobs.Me was avail and put it in a "Valuation website" (and they keep all recent valuations on display) just for fun and the results said it was worth Thousands. It was registered before I could type GoDaddy!

Live and learn. Hang out at valuation websites? You never know.

Just typed that url and its going to a lead generation website.

    One thing for certain.

Whether the person monetizes the website or not if you get the consistent traffic you have a valuable asset on your hands that investors will find attractive.
