scenario: starting a IM niche blog in 2016.

What would be the steps you take to go from 0 to consistent traffic?

- focus on building a list immediately?
- use content sharing networks like taboola, outbrain?
- use fb ads to drive traffic?
- focus on networking with other bloggers?
- social media growth?

Producing high quality content goes without saying.

DO all... Why not? I would do everything that I can to achieve all my goals. Priority would be long term relationship with your visitor and turn them to be your raving fans.

I agree, that all of these techniques can be done simultaneously without any harm, other than the work that is needed into managing all of them.

I think social media should definitely be a focus though, as that's becoming an increasing way that people share information, and if you can get a loyal following who really likes your content, you could get a lot of traffic from them sharing your posts and what not. With a big enough social following, it's essentially like a faucet of traffic that you can turn on whenever (to a degree) you want.

Definitely start with high-quality content. Next, you'll need to get some moderate traffic to it to see their reaction. Once you start getting some decent feedback, you can go all crazy with everything else.

Don't make the common mistake of sending all kinds of traffic to an unresponsive blog.

I don't have enough budget so I use the free ones. Find a niche. Identify your target market and location. Build social media accounts and create your followers. Share your post toy our social media channels. Use your keywords in your content and in your website.

As a personal preference, i would go with this option, and pour money into getting more quality leads immediately. This is your money source right here.

A lot of good suggestions for you here, Harry.

Keep in mind that Taboola and Outbrain, as well as Twitter ads, Facebook ads, solo ads and all the rest require a cash budget on hand. Not sure if that's something you're up to.

Also, you didn't say "fast" so I assume you're willing to go the slow, steady, organic route.

I built a very successful IM/blogging blog slow and steady, mostly through commenting strategies and steady, consistent effort. Grow a community of folks who are willing to support your blog in reciprocation for you supporting theirs by visiting regularly, engaging, leaving good comments.

This kind of consistent activity will draw lots of visitors over time, and will help with SEO. Social media, of course, and also... content upgrades.

Content upgrades means that you take people from your blog to more in-depth content that can be premium or paid. I'll write a blog post with basic info, have people "upgrade" to my free site via opt in to get "more info" on the topic. From the free site, they get to upgrade to my paid membership site for coaching and deeper level mastermind workshops/training.

This all builds your blog traffic because as you upgrade content in this way, your perceived authority rises a hundred-fold - or something in that neighborhood

Lot of work ahead for you my friend, but it's worthwhile and a lot of fun if you're loving what you're doing, and loving to help others along the way.

    Hi Harry,

    What Donna said

I'd say myself....what feels most fun to you? Do that. You'll rock it out.

I enjoy creating colorful content and networking with leading bloggers through blog commenting and social sharing. As Donna does.

Create and connect. Create the kick butt, helpful content, and connect through blog commenting....REAL blog commenting, where you post 3 or 4 or 5 paragraph comments for most of your works of art.

I love creating/writing. So I do well with it.

I make an impact with blog commenting.

But really, whichever of the strategies you listed feels really, really fun to you, take that route.

That's your way. That's your path. That's your fun, your bliss, and that's where all of your blog traffic is.

Signing off from somewhat sunny NJ.

Ive taken two blogs from 0 to thousands of views every day. My secret? Find networks where you can post content too. Build a presence on social media and connect with people on there. Comment on related blogs. Build an email list to send people to your blog posts. And the most important step of all...release good content

First step is to pick a new niche. People in 2016 aren't interested in following an IM blog written by an IM newbie. Not saying it is impossible, just that you are one in a long line of newbies that started their 'internet marketing journey blog'.

Rule Number 1 about IM blogs: if you don't know how to drive traffic to an IM blog, don't start one. I'm not trying to be a jerk, and do whatever you want. Definitely give the whole thing a try, as far as creating a website and trying to make money, just maybe give some more thought to the niche you enter so you don't end up wasting a lot of time and money.

Fail and fail. Been in the IM niche since 2011, just been making money in other ways. I'll admit I'm new to blogging.

But far from new to IM.

    Well,

The quickest way to get consistent traffic is to send money to Google and Facebook.

Unless you feel like waiting three years to make $50 a month.

First start blog, Why do I say that first? Because you want to start branding yourself as the Expert and as you gain experience write about it. Great thing here is that you can be yourself because a lot people are not great writers and struggle with this first task. While setting this up learn about free ways to drive traffic. Each way is a way to gain more traffic to your email list. The email list should be second or third but unfortunately the only way to grow this is with a personal squeeze page which you know about. There are so many social media platforms to use now that you could easily grow your email list fast if you are smart about it. Lets absorb all the knowledge you get and help others. Once you have a strong audience then you can connect with other bloggers because if you try to connect with a successful blogger and they look you up and see nothing then nothing is in it for then so they will not connect for you. We live in a selfish world so people think nothing is in it for them they will not help you most of the time. Hope this helps

I'd start a likes and post engagement campaign on Facebook.

Over time you'll build up a solid number of likes to your page and you'll be able to get organic traffic from just posting on your page.

And the engagement campaign drives traffic to your site and I like Facebook as a distribution channel because you don't pay for a fixed price. People are likely to share posts on FB and that'll get you some earned views.

I've gotten quite a bit of bot traffic from the content distribution sites you mentioned so you gotta watch out for winning and losing individual site and publishers.

Write proper content and send traffic to them by any means. All that you have listed can be effective if your blog has enough content which the reader will like & share.

I'd pay for the traffic though Google and Bing whilst concentrating time spreading the word on social media.

Paying for exposure gets the ball rolling with concerns and prolonged anticipation.

Once you've gained traction garnering free traffic you can perhaps consider decreasing or stopping investment into CPA. You might even chose to put more into it once you are making sales.

Some great ideas here already, especially with Google and Bing Ads, which work well if you know what you are doing. However, Youtube videos are an excellent way to get targeted free traffic too. Also, you should try using Reddit as well, I have personally had a lot of success with just these two free methods alone.
