Hello, new here and new to IM. I really want to work for myself. I just turned 40 and Im NOT going to be working 50-60 hours a week for the next 25-30 years. Not that I don't want to, its just not sustainable. My body wont hold up. Hell, Im not sure if I can make it to 41. Which leads me to my question. IS ANY OF THIS REAL? I know "stuff" is out there, but is it really possible to make a living doing internet marketing or what Im looking into, Affiliate marketing.

Ive tried Network Marketing in the past and was never successful because I just didn't like what I saw. The only way to make any real money was to sell an opportunity o make money. It was rarely about the product thatt the actual business opportunity sold. Which feel scam-ish to me. So after doing my research into making money on the internet, just like network marketing, it seems the "big hitters" are making millions by selling ways to make millions on the internet.

Are my observations correct? Are there legitimate ways to make money (a living)online? Im not looking for a get rich quick theme. My goal has always been to figure out a way to make $50, four times a day, from home. That's 52k a year. That's my goal. Is this possible?

Yes, it's VERY REAL if you avoid shiny objects and "Make $1000/day with no work" garbage.

I'm liking this response a lot because it's steering you in the direction of what I believe is a bit less complicated for a newbie... that's e-commerce.

Product sites are pretty easy to do nowadays and they're selling real products to real people, so you don't have to deal with phony authority, promises and all that. I mean, if you're selling shaving supplies, they are what they are.

      Am I wrong here?

If you pick nearly any topic... say legal forms and documents (i.e. living wills, divorce papers, incorporating a business, etc.) and Google the "keyword" plus the word "affiliate, or affiliate program, or maybe jv partners, or jv invite, etc.

You'll find several 'real' goods and services (outside of internet marketing) have affiliate programs.

In doing research for my current project, I just signed up to: LegalDepot.com as an affiliate, and they start your commissions at 30% - so, I mean if lawyers are smart enough to create affiliates, what does that tell you?

Yeah man, I'm with you just turned 44 on the 22nd of this month, and I damn sure cannot physically endure another year, month, or even a week of sluffing tools and hammers for a menial living.

Sure, there's money in it with the right mindset, but it requires a different set of tools, blueprints, and a marketing plan.

I'm gonna pass on a free ebook someone else turned me onto recently, and I suggest you read it, absorb it, read it again, and really apply the information Eric Louviere shared inside the book... it's a 122 pages (easy reading) and it makes sense in any niche market you choose to pursue...

Just look to the top right corner, you'll have to subscribe (it's free) but highly valuable (IMHO)

Yes... that "someone else" was indeed YOU!

I'm gonna read it again... for the 3rd time, as I am in writers block mode on my project, lol. (*so close... I can't wait to scream; "It's Alive!!!)

Well. Ralph it is real and your observations are also real.

There are lots of people making money online by selling products about making money online.

I am in Make Money Niche and if I had to do it all over I would pick a different niche.

This niche is like the Wild Wild West....It seems that anything goes.

I would advise you to pick a different niche. Maybe something you passionate about.

You are probably wandering...Why I am still in this niche if I dislike it so much.

Well....The sad truth is that I am either too stupid, too stubborn, or too lazy to learn a totally different niche. Probably all 3! Lol.

But the bottom line is that it is entirely possible for you or anyone else to make a full time living online if you take it as serious as you do your offline job.

    Ralph,

If it's not, there are hundreds of thousands of people on this forum that are totally wasting their time here.

Doesn't the mere existence and longevity of some "selling" type web sites suggest that somebody is making some money on the Internet?

Do you think Amazon and eBay and Google would be hanging around and valued at a gazillion dollars each if Internet marketing wasn't real?

Yes, there are and many of them are explained in detail at this site.

But here's your challenge: there are also even more illegitimate ways that are explained here that don't work. Beware of person, advice, ebook, system, or course that promises
    • no work
    • easy guaranteed profits
    • push button or magic solutions that never fail
    • some secret code to unlimited wealth has been cracked
    • all you need to do is buy into a system and do what you're told
    • X amount of money for you in a short time period
I am not aware or any legitimate business system or model that touts any of the above.

    Good luck to you,

    Welcome!

Yes, it's very real. I'm slightly younger than you and don't want to work a traditional 9-5 job for the rest of my life either. So I started writing. It wasn't an easy path but it has been very rewarding. I set my own hours and decide how much I want to work. Just don't fall for those get-rich-quick automated money making systems you see a lot of in the IM world. There's no substitute for hard work.

Promote something people need with recurring commissions.

    Example: Autoresponder service.

If people start building a list, they are not going to let their subscription lapse. When they pay every month, you get a commission. Sometimes for years.

From my personal experience and opinion.. you need to spend money to make money.

So yes IM is for real.. but if you want to do it right be prepared to invest and to learn a lot before you start getting results. Dedicate a great part of your time into reading subjects you want to try out. Research greatly before you actually try.. 8/10 methods are usually saturated or simply outdated. So be careful. I wish you good luck.

Here is the secret. I love that. If people would just realise this, they could make their life so much better.

The way I did it, to $800 per day, was to go with free traffic first. When i was making sales, I use to take out 50% and then start to invest the profits on paid traffic.

Realistically if you are a senior warrior in here, you would realise,, its a bit more complicated than that, but still this is how I did it. Am I a millionaire....no, but I will never have to worry about a job every again. and I am doing what I love. In the end, its about FREEDOM!

Yeah it's very real. Why wouldn't it be? (besides your individual efforts)?

The biggest thing you want to focus on is NOT a product or program... it's the marketing you need to focus on.

It's better to be a master marketer than being great about knowing the ins and outs of what you're selling. So learn how to be a master marketer FIRST, and learn how to sell ANYTHING. Once you can do that, you're untouchable.

Wow, thanks for all the replies!! I guess I will move forward knowing it's not a waste of time. I've been doing a ton of reading on it lately which basically has shown me I have a ton of options and I need to decide which direction to go. I started a crappy Wordpress site a few days ago to try and get used to setting up a site as a trial and error project. Also, I have been thinking about doing a page to sell an ebook that I may sit down and write. A few years back, I use to be a bodyguard/private investigator/private security for a billionaire on Palm beach here in Florida (I have the credentials to prove it) Though out of respect (and contractually) I couldn't name names in the book I thought about putting down on paper the daily habits that I witnessed while working on the estate. It wouldnt be a " how to become a billionaire" book or anything crazy like that. Just about how structured their lifestyles are but yet structured in a way that gives them a ridiculous amount of freedom and options. I just may do this....thanks again everyone. But as Randall Magwood said, I need to learn marketing first.

You really need to focus on reading Eric Louviere's free eBook first....

If not, you'll spend the next three to six years "learning."

You'll wake up and realize the time went by... But, you have not made any money.

Once you read Eric's book, it will all make sense....

I wish you all the best on your journey.

Haha... small world man, I worked on the island of Palm Beach a lot, and having done renovation work for a few Billionaires on the island, I can tell you observing (and speaking with them) was a definite eye-opener for me.

The heir to Morton salt asked me why I was building pools for a living as he saw I possessed more potential when I submitted a hand drawn sketch of a double-sided fountain for his backyard - He handed me a $10,000 down payment check that same day! - guy was cool as hell, and was flying to Brazil that afternoon to go study their culture... mainly their favelas.

Definitely, read Eric's book...it's everything you need to know about marketing, and just keep plugging away on the tech stuff (Wordpress, Aweber, listbuilding, etc...) - but, write that ebook... I'm working on one now.

Hey Art, haha, yeah pretty small world. That's awesome man. I loved working on the Island. Most people there are pretty nice. I worked mostly over on South Ocean. I did security details at other estates for a lot of people. Most of the time I didn't know who's house it was or who was going to be there until the briefing before the event. The coolest one was when the governor showed up to a party I had a detail at. I had to get out of that line of work though. The full-time gig just didn't pay well and I live down in Ft Lauderdale so the hour drive was killing me. Billionaires can be cheap when they want to and they do their best to separate themselves from the liability that may come if their guards have to kill someone in their defense, believe it or not.

I will start assembling my book. Thanks for the advice. I'll download the ebook you mentioned today and get that into my brain.

I'd avoid as much of the "tech stuff" as possible....

        Keep it simple...

Create an awesome product and a sales page... Create the product in Word or Open Office... Create your simple sales page in WordPress.... and slap a PayPal button on it. You're done.

For extra credit, you can add insert one line of Javascript to add your AWeber optin form.

Trying to learn "tech stuff" beyond these very simple tasks gets in the way of making money (creating products and sales pages).

If you have problems with "tech stuff," you can always find someone here in Warriors For Hire or for very simple tech stuff..... There is always Fiverr.

With your knowledge of PI and bodyguard, you should write a kindle version. It is easy to get a nice cover made off Fivver and by learning all the tips & tricks for promoting Kindle books (youtube it) you
could do well, maybe even a series of books. If i had your knowledge Thats what i would do.

It takes some time to filter out all the crap from what works.

You MUST be willing to work as hard as you do in your day job for your online business.

At your level, you're at learning mode so read around this forum and get your head around some techniques that are making money for others.

Also, avoid buying any 'systems' or gimmicky products that promise results. Only you can guarantee your success with the amount of effort you put in.

You are starting the exact age I was when I started , 40

Definitely doable. I also did the Network Marketing thing over the years. Every one under the sun including Amway, Water Filters, Diet Cookies. telephone cards, insurance etc..etc..

I stay away from that stuff because a lot of it is predicated on other peoples' work.

Anyway, good luck and stay awhile and absorb some of the info here. That's how I got started and it will serve you well

    Fixed that for you.

Some people seem to always be, as Zig Ziglar called it, "spilling their popcorn in the lobby." They offer solutions again and again and again, and forget to ever ask for a sale.

They run a newsletter or other email list for months before actually promoting something, and wonder why people feel a disconnect when they do.

There are many legitimate ways to make money on the internet. But time, effort and at least some investment is required.

Hi, 1. First find a mentor that has what you want, 2. stick with one system that is proven to work, most people do not even start or quit in less then 30 days...most businesses take time to get established, no different then an online business, or MLM. Money Making Opportunities are very plentiful and temporary, I would stay away from them they are like purchasing lottery tickets. Not a business model. 3. Brand yourself separatly from your Business or MLM, best way is using a combination of Facebook ads, Youtube and solo ads. 4. Test, Test and Test... you do not know what advertising is working if you do not test or keep track of your ad metrics.... hope this helps, send me an message on here if you like to get in touch with me.

Thanks for the replies. Its been 8 weeks since I posted here. I've tried a lot of things and have settled on ecommerce. I had too many issues with Wordpress, especially trying to set up an Amazon affiliate site. I have migrated to Shopify and have a general merchandise store. I do advertising on Facebook, in which the store is geared towards. I have yet to make a dime, Probably spent over $500 on books, themes, plugins, apps, and Facebook advertising fees. Its as frustrating as I thought it'd be. I try to learn as much as I can through webinars from people that want to sell me a "proven system" but so far, loosely replicating these proven systems haven't generated even one conversion. So ,I'm still stuck on (in my mind) the only way to make any real money online is to sell people a system on how to make money online. Unless you own EBay or Amazon. Either way, Im not giving up. Internet marketing is my savior from these 60 hour workweeks that are killing me. If anyone would like to give me constructive criticism my site is www.theFBgiftshop.com

    Hey Ralph,

I appreciate your question and felt exactly like you did a few years ago.

The bottom line is, YES, it is very possible to make a living online.

Think about it, EVERYTHING revolves around marketing. Everything you ate today, everything you purchased, wore, consumed had to be SOLD. In order for product and services to be sold, marketing has to take place.

The more expensive the product you market, the bigger the percentage you make.

Just like it's possible to be an entrepreneur on Main Street, it's possible to be an entrepreneur on the Internet.

BUT...it's WORK to build the front end and get something going on autopilot. Don't be fooled by the guys who say you can buy their product and be rolling in dough tomorrow.

    No such animal.

Hang in there. Study, read, investigate, experiment, find your niche.

    You CAN do it! :-)

    All the best,

    Pat

    That's funny.

I work more hours now (online) than the old offline 9-5.

I guess the difference is when you're doing something you like you don't watch the clock waiting to clock out for the day.

I used to work for others, I'd be wondering if it was lunch time yet about an hour and a half after starting to work. Since going on my own, there've days (many) when the question first come to mind 7 or 8 hours after I start.

With that out of the way, OP, it's real if can focus enough to start one thing and see it through before you jump to something else.

    Sure it is real,

But, as others have said, you must stay away from the shiny objects and promises of getting rich overnight.

Pick a niche you are interested in--health, dog training, fitness, etc.

Put up a niche site full of great content in one aspect of this niche--like fitness for woman over 40

Or blog about about an entire niche--like health and fitness, where you can cover everything from weight loss, to exercise, book reviews, etc.

Or you can put up a squeeze page--giving away something of value to get emails so that you can sell to people over and over.

Of course you can have a give-a-way on your niche site or blog too.

The above is by no means an end-all-be-all as there other ways to go about making money online.

The big catch is that you have to stick to it when you do not make thousands of dollars the first week you are line.

    Hope this Helps

Making money online is not hard. There are two ways of doing it.

    1. Sell your services or product for money.

    2. If you don't have a service or product, sell someone else's for money.

Pick a niche. For example let's say you like camping.

You decide to sell camping gear.

You join affiliate networks that offer you commission for selling camping gear.

You pick a product. For this example let's say it's a flashlight.

You create a website about this flashlight and tell everyone how great it is.

You put your affiliate link in the website.

You buy paid traffic of people looking to buy camping flashlights. You send them to your website.

Visitors read your website and like what you had to say about the camping flashlight.

The visitor buys the flashlight using your affiliate link.

    You've made your first sale.

Congratulations. Making money online is real.

Now spend the rest of your time split testing and improving your website to increase your sales so you make more profit.

    rinse and repeat.

I just gave you the blueprint to making money online and it didn't cost you anything.

Now go do something with it.

    Of course this is real.
This forum and all the networks, affiliates, etc wouldn't be around if it wasn't.

50-60 hour weeks aren't a long term strategy, at first it might be the short term plan, but it's not a good long term solution. Many are in this with much less time than this.

    Best of luck!

It absolutely is real, but you hit on a great subject - is selling people the idea of becoming rich a bad thing?

Well not to me - here's the thing. Most people are going to spend their money, very few have the discipline to actually manage finances for more than their lifetime. Very few have the ability or desire to move out of the comfort zone and into the greatness zone!

No matter what you end up doing to make money you are in some way scamming someone else out of their money. Just the nature of the beast.

I work in IM marketing as well as Network marketing, I will say that NM is a better path to lead people to personal development. But at the end of the day they both require work, sacrifice and a plan.

Guys in the weight loss/health and beauty market are crushing it BIG TIME. I mean affiliates by the way.

I know this because we have tons of clients with tons of success stories in these niches.

So to answer your question, non of this is a sham. Get your hands dirty and start building up your own online business NOW.

Read the recommended books, especially Millionaire Fastlane by T. Harv Eker. It will help you change your mindset since success is 95% mindset.

Speed of implementation is everything in business.

Yea, it's real. I have been working online full time for over 16 years. For which I have been doing the exact same thing the entire time.

I promote PPL (pay per lead...lead generation) offers. The reason why is very simple and that's because there is no credit card / purchase required to complete an offer. All a user has to do is fill out a short form, so conversion rates are typically much higher than offers that require a sale to be made.

Some verticals that I have done extremely well with are: insurance, education, mortgage, credit, debt, loans, home owner offers, etc.

To generate traffic, I buy targeted data (email) rather than paying for ads / traffic, etc... that most marketers do This way I am building assets that I then own and can market to over and over at low cost. So if I acquire life insurance data, I send them a life insurance offer. If it's education data, then I send them an education offer. Along with cross promoting offers.

Basically I'm monetize data using PPL offers, because they offer the path of least resistance to generating conversions and converting the data into cash producing assets.

Obviously there is a lot more that goes into it. Done right and it can be extremely profitable.

    Anyway, something to think about.

When I first started being interested in IM I noticed a sticky post in the WSO section of this very form (which has really gone down hill by the way) that said people have started $20,000 a month business's from here and I thought "What a bunch of bullshit, no one is making $20K a month online"

Fast forward to today and $20K would be a particularly bad month for me.

So yea its real. Here is the thing. Its NOT easy. Its NOT instant. Its NOT something every one can do (most don't have the work ethic / dedication). But be assured it IS possible if you chose to do it.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. Well, I must say, reluctantly, that I have not had any success with this. I just shut down my ecommerce site. I was selling camping, outdoor, and survival gear. I just couldn't pay $40 a month to shopify anymore for a site that has only made $3.00 since last May. I had tried affiliate marketing too. Spent lots of money on themes, traffic, hosting, etc. I even bought what I thought was a sure-fire program from a guy on here who claims building "simple sites" that make "big profits" is the way to go. Unfortunately, in his webinars he lies through his teeth about the actual cost of PPC traffic. Also, the main affiliate network he uses wants people with experience before they will approve you. So I was scammed. Pretty bitter about that if you cant tell. Now Im at a standstill. I have no clue which direction to go because I really dont want to and cant afford to lose anymore money.

One good way to go about it is to learn from your past actions.

Why did you have a site selling camping, outdoor, etc. stuff?

      How were you selling it?

What did you have on the site? Who were you targeting? How did you let the right people know your site exists? Where did you tell the right people that your site exists? Who were the right people for your site, your ideal clients?

What keywords did you use? What ads did you use? How did the ads tell the right people that there was something in it for them? Where did you advertise?

It is simple but difficult, yet not too difficult, if you do all the steps decently well. If you do them really well, you make lotsa money.

Find a hungry crowd, sell them what they're hungry for. That's the simple part.

The hard part is actually finding the hungry crowd AND understanding it.

I am the opposite of what your target audience is. The great outdoors, for me, is the park down two blocks from where I live.

But even people who are interested in the outdoor stuff come into groups, based on interest level, income, amount of free time, activities they like to do in the great outdoors, who do they like to do these activities with.

So, one group might be couples in their 40's who like to take their kids to a camping park close to the city they live in and like to fish.

Another group might be people who like to go hunting.

Another group might be the spouses of the people who like to go camping, the reluctant outdoors people...

You'd be talking to the 3 groups differently. Some of the products they're interested in would be the same, some would be different.
