Nicheless/multi niche sites

I am in the process of creating a nicheless/multi niche site to compare the results with my niche site.

The first problem I am having is that with a niche site you go off and find the keywords you want to use and then write up a list of articles to go with the keywords.

Should I use the same approach?

With a nicheless/multi niche site I have more freedom to write what I want but I still need to please google to get traffic. How should I go about choosing topics to write about for multi niche sites?
#niche #nicheless or multi #sites

I would suggest you create categories first. Then you can place each article in the appropriate category to make the surrounding content more optimized for the search engines.

PS. If you do make a multi niche site, then it will have less authority (and therefore rank lower) because google will not be able to categorize it for a specific niche.

As a newbie, I'm confused here. What is the point of a multi-niche site? What is the goal?

I have created Main Categories which are in the navigation under the header/logo and then there are sub categories. For example PCs (main)> laptops (sub) > desktops (sub) > notebooks (sub)

The site is more geared towards healthy living, sustainability alternative living etc...

So while the site covers various topics the subjects will be of interest to the target audience as a whole (generally speaking).

My goal for the site is to have 50-100 articles and generate 20,000 monthly visitors (I have bigger goals but I want to set a goal that is realistic and should be attainable).

  • Hi,

Though having a nicheless site has its own benefits, you still need to follow some certain processes in order not to put all of your efforts to waste. When choosing topics, atleast:

    1. Go for the ones that you have some knowledge about, something which you can share your own insights aside from having to research its content on the internet.

    2. Test the competition of the topic you are interested in including in your site. If you have chosen a particular category, atleast run a specific search of this niche with a tool that you have in order to rank your site in the long run. An example of this would be weight loss. It is a high search, high competition niche you will have a hard time ranking in search engines.

    3. Once you are done with your topics, that's when you need to turn on your keyword research.

If you just mainly want to share your knowledge to the world, do as you please. You can even skip the keyword research. But if you want to monetize your site and not put all your efforts to waste atleast come up with an initial plan of optimizing your keywords, topics etc so you can reap the benefits later on.

    Goodluck!

I'm afraid you're setting yourself up for failure.

Why would anyone want to visit a site that was not focused on a specific niche in which they were interested? Sites that try to be broad and "everything to everybody" make no sense. It is a recipe for failure.

You've got to remember this: you're not setting up a site to please Google. You want your site to please your target audience.

If I am interested in bird watching and your site has one article on bird watching and a hundred other articles on a hundred different topics, am I going to stick around or ever come back? No - that should be obvious.

A much smarter strategy (at least if you're doing this to make money) would be to set up a separate niche site for each of your chosen niches and focus on making it "deep" (meaning lots of great focused content on that one niche only.)

Yes, I noticed the oxymoron as I was typing it.

So, if by nicheless, we mean a website that is just a collection of random topics or articles. Then no it is not this at all.

It is more of a collection of niches under one central umbrella.

For example: Personal Health (main site)

      Main cat 1 Exercise

      Main cat 2 Beauty
      Nails (sub) .> several articles
      Hair (sub) .> several articles
Skin care (sub) > Several articles

      Main cat 3 Health
      Vitamins (sub) > articles
      Diet (sub) > articles

The site I am trying to replicate is in a sort of 'News' style blog without actually being a news headline site.
I do realise that it would be better to have several niche sites but for the sake of simplicity I would rather have it under one site. Afterall, any promotion I do on one site I would have to do on another.

I'm hoping that the categories you listed were simply for illustration. If not, heaven help you.

At the very least, niche it down to a more targeted group.

For example, aiming such a site at female millennials would require one general set of content. That content would not likely appeal to male boomers. And vice versa. If it did, it would have to be so generic that it wouldn't garner attention for either group.

Remember, "if you try to appeal to everyone, you end up appealing to no one." Some cliches get to be cliches for a reason.

You said you want to do this with 50-100 articles! To even have a chance of making this type of website successful, I would say the very minimum number of articles you'd need just to start out with would be at least 10,000. And then you'd have to keep adding at least 100 a day on the low side - should really be at least several hundred a day.

You need to understand that you'd not only have to make each little subcategory equivalent to a full authority site in that sub-niche, but that you'd have to make it better than all the authority sites out there. And you'd have to make each category that contains the sub-categories better than all the authority niche sites you're competing with. And then you'd have to sell you website in general as not only an authority site on the general topic but as an authority on everything contained in the general topic. And you'd have to give people who have all the varied interests contained in your general topic a reason to keep coming back to your site rather than sites specific to their interests.

It's not impossible. There are large websites that do it and make a lot of money. But they are massive sites with massive resources and massive authority and with a lot of work and money invested in them. You don't seem committed to this at all from what you wrote. You're definitely not going to make it a success with the very small amount of work you're willing to do to make it happen. If you want a successful site with 50-100 articles, keep the niche focused.

I agree that you should focus on a more targeted group.
Just avoid trapping yourself in a small niche with your domain name.
You can always extend your content to other subjects in future when you have a following.

    gossip anything goes
    trends
    news etc...

they are a niche but the topics can range all over the place

is this what your talking about?

I can tell you right now that your single "niche site" will make more money than the "nicheless/multi niche" website you're trying to build. Having the persona of a *big* site can make you feel like you have an instant authority site on the internet, but in truth, you will only have a broke site on the internet. Stick with the fundamentals of direct marketing, and cancel the big multi/niche site....

....but you probably won't follow my advice anyway.

    Good luck.
