How do I get other businesses to advertise for me?

I was thinking of offering article writing or web design services...but I don't want to wait weeks or months to get my first customers by making a website and waiting for it to rank...

I'd like to have other reputable businesses just mention my services so people will trust them, and then contact me directly. But...even if it was just simple posts on social media I'm sure they'd charge me a lot for it (or can that be actually be cheap?)

So would offering discounted or even free services help to get them to agree to promote my service?

And I can't decide on who to ask/call/email. I can't ask competition to help, but if I call random places the people who go there won't be interested in web design or articles...and blogs are usually about random topics, not specific services...

Any help would be awesome.

Here's the harsh truth about content writing: if you wait for your website to rank to get clients, you'll never make a living at this. You can't be passive when it comes to marketing your services. If you want to be successful, you're going to have to hustle. I've been doing this since 2008 and I almost never rely on my website to bring in business. I network on Linkedin. I send cold emails. I use sites like Upwork (I've gotten some great long term clients from there that I now write for independently of Upwork). I talk to people when I'm out and about and always carry business cards. You have to really put yourself out there if you want to get business. This isn't a passive way to make money. Most of my time is spent marketing myself because if I stop, the money dries up.

Get your website up and going and then start hustling. Don't rely on Google to do your heavy lifting.

Why don't you just start off as a freelancer so that you can get some clients. Just google "best sites for freelancers".

Forget that - you have to promote yourself. Have you created accounts on freelance sites? Have you posted an ad on this forum offering your services? Do you have a portfolio of your writing in various styles/niches/voices and samples of your design work?

Freelancing isn't sitting back and asking someone to promote you - it won't work. You can't compete in price with third world countries so you have to complete in quality and style... and in selling your own services.

I'm not sure you understand the basics and processes of being a freelancer. I'd advise you to read some of the "how to be a freelancer" blogs you can find with a google search. Don't buy anything - just read through some of the advice and info on those sites. It will give you a quick education in how to get started.

This isn't directly related to your question but since you're a freelancer I highly recommend you read this:

Well, you don't get something for nothing. So you have to offer something valuable to the business to advertise on your behalf. Perhaps, you can offer your expertise in exchange for promotion.

It is always better to start off as a freelancer for article writing purpose. Why don't you try becoming freelancer then asking people and say I will promote you site. Get paid for what you do and establish good relations with clients which will help you further to build your own business.

You can search for these large companies online and some do advertising and they can include a link say in an email they send to their list and or you can place a banner on their website and piggyback off of their traffic.

That's going to cost money. Large companies aren't going to give it away for free.

Pay for the traffic. You don't have to wait for it to rank. Who told you that paid advertising isn't advisable to start off with? It's actually good to start off with paid advertising because you can test a niche and see if it's responsive to your basic offer... even if it's as basic as seeing how well your squeeze page converts.
