How To Tell The Real Ones From the Hyped Ones?

I have spent more money on internet marketing and other ways to make money online. Even from home. I'm 65 now and have lost my business due to road construction in front of it. Now I am more desperate than ever. If I could make $500 to $1,000 a month, I'd be happy! Instead I fail at each offer for one reason or another. Depression has taken over and I need to find some legit way to make ends meet. Surely, there must be someone who can help me locate, find or begin a opportunity that actually works? And it doesn't have to be free, it just has to work!

Usually, if you have to ask, then it's all hype.

If someone promises $X income (or gloats about how much they're making), it's hype.

If someone sells something for money without first proving their knowledge with actionable material, it's hype.

I write a lot about "this guy" on my blog:

    Don't buy from this guy.

I'm not saying don't educate yourself -- quite the opposite. There are plenty of ways to make money online, and all of them are covered for free if you look around.

How can you build a following? What are your expertise, in general? Use that knowledge to help people. When you help others, you build a loyal following who trusts you. If people trust you, they'll buy nearly anything you offer (if it solves their problem).

If I had to summarize this advice in one point, it would be to stop looking for schemes or "systems" that will make you money. Build something valuable, something real, something that will grow based on how helpful it is to the community (not based on how much money it makes you).

Best of luck. It's always going to be challenging, but you can do it if you get into the right mentality.

There is nothing wrong with promoting your own work on a forum specifically created to promote internet marketing {ironic grin} Discernment is always needed, and just because your advertisement of your own services is not clickable does not make you in any way morally superior.

Honestly, at this point you should try to find some form of employment.

I'm not saying this to discourage you from internet marketing but it takes time (among other things) to build a business online.

If you want a legit way to make money online, there's affiliate marketing, Kindle publishing, freelancing, creating and selling your own product, etc.

Choose one, educate yourself as much as possible about that business model, and create a timetable and budget.

So while you are learning the ropes with whatever business model you choose, you should find a job to at least help pay the bills.

Honestly, a job is the most guaranteed way to make money fast and predictably...

From your business experience, you'll know that a business often takes time to cultivate to the point where you're making a good profit.

    Regards,
    Daniel

I tend to agree danieldesai. Not to complain but that hasn't worked for me either! Owning my own business for over 30 yrs and not having work ref. plus my age has dented my ability for employment but I am currently still applying. So doing both job hunting and other options.

Are you comfortable saying what field your business was in?

No problem if not (don't want to get too personal here). But we might be able to help come up with some creative applications of your past experience (either online, offline, consulting, or otherwise).

Sure RS3RS. That's the kicker.Iv'e had a varied career of success. Never got rich but did OK. My last gig was as owner of a retail ladies apparel and gift store with my wife. We are 25 yr. pro floral designers having owned a florist for many years.

My best business was a 200 seat restaurant with lounge. Took it from $450K to over $1M in 2 yrs but that changed when they closed the main highway for 6 months. Overhead could not be sustained. So, I have learned a LOT from all this! Even started writing a book on doing business in "the new economy".

In my earlier years I began as a DJ and on air personality so broadcasting and voice over ,etc. is my first choice. Very competitive area and haven't done digital board operations in years. Be happy to provide more info. If you have any ideas, I'm listening!

I feel for you, and I am nearly your age myself-7 years younger- look internet marketing is just the same as any business, you must have something to sell, information, goods, knowledge which I'm certain you know already-Traffic is your problem you say, Facebook is probably one of the biggest sources of traffic, but you must craft your 'dark posts' and target effectively FB is a cheap source of traffic, as is YouTube. It is all in HOW you approach it there are no short-cuts or hacks you must communicate to your audience. I find with boomers it is all in the style of communication that lets them down, you are not naturally geared to online culture. The basics have not changed, business is business the internet just provides us with a ready source of markets - then you have to reach them.

I don't get it! Your city should offer you a financial assistance package which allows you to submit a claim for your losses due to road closures. As a business owners, you can definitely seek compensation for lost sales, unless you're in North Korea.

I typed this into Google search : "compensating stores for road construction closing" I got 44,800,000 results. I read about 5 of them and it's clear that you can get compensation for your loss. There is no way you should have to go bankrupt because of a road construction. It doesn't work that way. The city can not put people out of business because they want to build a road.

    What am I missing?

That's very interesting and I will research it more as I did approach the city and was told there was nothing they could do. Submitting a claim has to be done through some entity. I will definitely follow up on this. I do know that it happens all the time but never knew something could be done about it! A small town lost half of it's retail stores near here because they blocked off an entire section of main entrance to it! They did provide other exits to the town but it still cost the town dearly so yes, it is done in the good ole' USA! Thank you for the lead.

Usually road work doesn't totally cut off a business - so compensation isn't so easy. When construction limits access by making it difficult to park or get to a business entrance...6 months is more than enough to shut down a good business.

You have options you may not have considered.

I'd suggest you consider making money through services. You could easily make $1k a month (yes, easily) on freelance sites writing content or ghost writing ebooks. You and your wife could share the work which would help motivate and bring up the income, too.

Unlike jobs where age is a big factor (and, yes, I know that's illegal - but it's a fact, too)...your "experience, business knowledge and maturity" would make you a great find for someone looking for writers. You could specialize in writing about florists or small business practices or business accounting....lost of subjects the average young writer knows little about.

I put those word in bold because they be featured in your bids for freelance work. Buyers are LOOKING for that and it's not easy to find.

Added to the above - you have inside knowledge in several businesses. Why not write up some short ebooks (15k-20k words which would be 50-75 pages) with 'insider' info on things you know about and publish a series of business books on Kindle.

Tell people what to beware of in a restaurant - how to tell if an eatery is safe - how to get the best deals from florists - how to buy gift items like pro and cut out the middle man....

Or a book on restaurant management for new owners - how to run a profitable flower shop - how to start and stock a boutique gift store.

USE your knowledge - people will pay for it.

  • This thread reminds me of the scene from "The Grifters" where a young John Cusak seeks con-artist training.

His mentor-to-be says, "OK, give me $20".

Mentor-guy folds the offering into his lapel and says, "Come back tomorrow, I'll take you again".

I do not think I will ever suggest a job especially when you have Internet Marketing on the brain. The seconds and minutes are like excruciating hours!

I guess a better form of a job and easier to swallow would be Services.

Find other marketers that have a solid business foundation and offer to help them make money. Simple as that.

If someone has a hot product/service become an affiliate and simply ask them to guide you to the best ways to promote. Of course they will help you to help them make money!

You may just get some insights into a business you may not have had any other way without premium priced coaching.

When you finally start marketing, begin with paid advertising. But of course to do that you need funds. Find a job and use it as your main vehicle to get leads and eventual customers. And then maybe (or seriously)... considering hiring a good marketing consultant.

What were the main problems that you encountered when trying to sell online in the past?

I did keyword research and studied e commerce sites. I had an apparel on Shopify and then after more research found hair extensions to be a good product due to less compt. and reasonable search volume. Set up a FB page and did get some sales but the only drop shipper was in China! Too long to ship and cust. canceled their orders. So the main problem has been getting traffic and conversions.

eschulze, you have some extremely valuable information locked up in that experience. You also have a valuable skill with DJ/voiceover work.

So I'm going to piggyback on Kay's excellent post and suggest a blend of creating online courses for new/struggling business owners, along with consulting/coaching services.

Who knows? You could be the next Anthony Melchiorri (Hotel Impossible) or Jon Taffer (Bar Rescue).

Sorry to hear about your situation. I think the reality is that most people on here would also be happy if they could find a method to earn $500 - $1000/month online. It really isn't easy to make money online and most people won't just give you a method if it works. There is lots of good information on this forum that can help you generate ideas for online ventures. Search around and try to implement any methods that strike your interest.

While many of my intial responses have already been mentioned above, I feel for you. I too had a knack for a multitude of offline gigs and small businesses that did very well in the past.

However, I cannot help to think if you are a decent communicator and have (or had) prior experience speaking on the radio, you surely could do podcasts, or create a combo of written/audio products... add video and your a triple threat.

But, I know how it goes... for years people told me I should start a talk show, because I never shut up, and had a ton of weird (often humiliating and yet interesting) experiences throughout my 44 years... In fact, just now I read a response where a fellow warrior told me I should podcast what I write about here.

Sometimes it hard to see the forest through the trees... at the end of the day, if you can help others solve their problems (maybe using affiliate products, goods, and services) or recreate something from your recent experiences... maybe you or the wife had some authentic recipes at the restaurant, or from the retail apparel you did.

Lastly, you'd be surprised... there's guys like Mike Geary who the book "The Truth About Abs" and primarily marketed his "How to " book through ClickBank to the tune of millions of dollars!

Same goes for the guy who wrote the "How to" on "How to Build a Chicken Coupe" - and there's tens of thousand's of others... but, it does take exposure, traffic, and marketing skills... or money, lol

Either way, Good luck to you sir...

    All the Best,
