Been noticing a blogger trend.. no categories

What's up with all these blogs (and wp themes) that are forgoing the usual categories and just posting all articles on the same home page in list form or just their latest article on the home page?

No search bar, no categories, no tags, no nothing....

MUST be a point to this although I can't figure it out?

I did not take a close look at the sites, but I am guessing if it is not due to laziness, or clean formatting, most/many are probably attempts at seo/seo siloing.

I quit having categories. The main reason is that the theme I'm now using puts links to all the categories across the top and it messes up the design.

Also, there's the issue of some posts simply not fitting in an established category or two and there's also things like IFTTT automation which uses a specific category for syndication. If a post isn't made in that category, it won't be syndicated by IFTTT.

But again, the biggest reason for me is because it messes up my layout.

Another possibility is the rise in importance of mobile browsing. I use my 7" tablet a lot, and many site structures (I didn't specify themes because the sites are not all blogs or blog based) don't handle things like tiered menus very well. To squeeze everything in, you end up with microscopic type or messed up displays, like Kurt mentioned.

I know that at least a few of your examples have to have good reasons for doing what they do, as the publishers are neither lazy nor ignorant.

Also, a lot of the mobile layouts hide menus behind a symbol that looks like 3 or 4 horizontal lines and the search function is either hidden there or access with a symbol that looks like a magnifying glass.

Just a guess . . . there's really no big trend, conspiracy, or reason. It's just a personal style preference of some bloggers. It's easy to set up and post in the same place each time. They set a page length and then just post in the same spot each time.

It's simple and easy for them . . . but not as user friendly (as categories) for those looking for a particular post, IMO.

no the reason is not that the people are lazy or there is some new trend. its just that these people have their own way of doing stuff.

Maybe they realized no one is visiting their old pages on their old layout so there's no reason to feature categories or archived posts at all on the new site. Mobile would have a lot to do with that I would think. I read most blog posts from my phone during breakfast or lunch. I can't remember the last time I clicked on a category to go read another one. I visit the home page, see what's been recently added and I go read it. I may, however, click an in-line link within the blog post content to go read another post that was referred to in the main post. Well, there ya have it. One experience from one actual blog post frequent reader. 'Course, one thing I've discovered is if a single person does anything on the web for a particular reason, there are at least 1,000 others doing exactly the same thing for the same reason. So, maybe there is some trend-truth to my comment.

It works for them, is the reason I can think of.

If it doesn't work for them, they won't be doing that.

    interesting thread.

all of these top marketers have these billboard-type sites now..

I was thinking of trying some of them out..

as far as testing goes, i know that on my own sites the less options (menu links) my visitors have the lower the bounce rate is.... this goes for both my IM site and my baby shower site..

    Best of luck,
