Dumb Question. Finally a real dumb question. I'll ask it anyway

Hi Warriors,

For years I've seen people call their question a "dumb" question and then we all come to their rescue by saying something like, "There is no such thing as a dumb question...."

Sadly I feel I've come up with one.

You see, as long as I've been reading and participating here on the WF I probably should know all of the basics, however I've got to reveal this. I don't

So here is my DQ: What exactly happens when you "social bookmark?"

I've never cared about this subject because I just don't use any social sites in my business. I'm not on MySpace, Twitter, FaceBook etc.

The forum company I use just sent me an email and announced with great excitement. "We've added EASY Social Book Marking."

My forums are private membership forums and you have to have passwords to read them. I see no reason to "book mark" them.

So again: What exactly is happening when people click those little book mark thingys at the bottom of posts, comments etc? What happens if the forums are private and password protected and what happens if they are not private and password protected?

Oh geez. Now you've done it.

I'm not that well versed in social bookmarking either. I think it's something best outsourced by people like us, George.

I can't see the poinit in social bookmarking a private page/forum post/blog post etc. Unless the option to pay and join the membership is included when you try to view the page. In that case, I can see that your bookmark will be truly welcomed by the site owner!

It's just a link, really. The idea behind them is for people to show everyone else sites they think are worth checking out... hence the 'social' aspect. The 'bookmark' part is just another way of saying 'link.'

The reason lots of marketers dig 'em is because the search engines seem to love the major SB sites. So social bookmarking can be a fast way to get new content indexed. You get fast indexing + a backlink.

    What's not to love?

Next DAQ (I think we all know what the 'A' stands for)!

It's a way to get your content to spread... to allow other people to share your content... your articles... your links... and bank more cash.

Don't quote me on this but I think they make the Google algorithms like you better. And by that I mean, physically like you better. Find you physically attractive. Google's algorithms have become so evolved that they've entered their teenage years and help rank websites due to what they believe their owner's level of socialness(read: physical attractiveness) in the social bookmarking scene. Again, don't quote me on this.. but it's what I've heard.

There is a video on youtube that can explain it better then I will ever, here is the link:

Google has not said for sure, but it is well known that they watch the social book marketing sites to understand the social buzz around certain keywords.

i'm guessing no... you don't want to have social bookmarking on a private member only forum

      Why not?

It's not like non members will be able to access the content if they follow a link.
