Anyone managed to do this clever trick with video?

Has anyone managed to do the following with video on their site?

Imagine you have a blog post with text and a ten minute "premium" video which only paid members can watch.

I'd like non-members to be able to watch the first 2 minutes and then the video to be stopped automatically with a message which says, "Subscribe to unlock the whole video".

I am sure there must be a plugin that does this but have had no luck searching. The only solution I can think of is very time consuming (when there are lots of videos). Having to create two blog posts (one for members and one for non-members) the first having a preview version of the full video.

Any advice appreciated!

I was looking for something similar a while back and ran out of time, so, what I did was this...

You will still need 2 versions of the video (which would be easy enough just "cutting" the video length during the rendering process to create a "preview" version) but then using short code, set it up to show the preview to non-members and the full version to members.

I realize this is not exactly what you were asking for and it isn't as ideal, however, it is a lot cheaper, I am sure, and does work sufficiently enough. (Well, it did for me anyway. Plus, I was also able to store the full versions in a different location which helped with security issues as well.)

Again, I know this is exactly what you were trying to avoid doing (having 2 videos), but using the short code method does at least cut down on the number of posts.

Hope it helps just the same.

Thanks for your reply Johny. Just to confirm, I understand that I'd need to create two versions of the video, but can you clarify how the shortcode works. Is the idea that only one page would have to be created, and using a shortcode it would show the preview of full correct depending on whether the person was logged-in as a member? (I am using DAP with Thrive Themes)

      Thanks,

        Thanks,
I am not sure how DAP works and I forget the name of the membership plugin I was using, however, yes, essentially, the membership software/plugin (any decent one anyway) should have a way for you to display say Video A if the user is NOT logged in but Video B if they ARE logged in. So, it is just one page, with 2 different pieces of info (video embed codes) and depending on their status (logged in or not), they will see the appropriate video.

Hi Marbeloa! I am using DAP and am considering Thrive membership to get the full suite. How is the DAP/Thrive combination working for you? Thanks!

The only way I can see to get around with is with two separate videos. I never tried this myself but I have seen it done so I am sure there is a way to do it out there but it is likely with 3rd party software.

Thanks Jo - can you remember where you've seen this done before? Thanks.

Easy Video Suite can do something along these lines.

Actually, whilst on this topic, has anyone seen anything similar for audio as well? So an audio player will stop after a defined number of seconds and you have to register to unlock the rest of it?

Why not put a 2 minute teaser, and after the cutoff, just say "to watch the rest of this video, you must be a subscriber". Then put a link there or somewhere for them to subscribe. After they subscribe, reroute them to a membership page with the full video.

Though I do like your suggestion, and am wondering how to go about setting it up.

Thanks GetPLRhere. That is a solution. The main aim of the search is to find something that prevents duplication of video production. If I am doing 1000's of videos, it'll result in many extra days work in rendering "preview" versions" etc.

Hello, it can be done with a custom video theme, right out of the box, yes I know how

I tested a script for someone a few years back that stopped the video and forced people to share the video in order to continue.

That product is no longer available, but I did a search and found some more information here on the topic:

Thanks Jill - I have found lots of "content" lockers or "like to view", but am looking for something which previews a video then, prompts an action for the user (e.g. "subscribe to watch more"). I can't see reference to partial locking of video of audio content on the page you linked to.

    Hello,

I just saw your message, to do this, Video Teaser Timeouts!
You can setup your own timeout parameters so that guests or non-selected members can only watch the video for XXX seconds before they are redirected and asked to join/pay.

Just use their theme, premiumpress.com / got to their video theme.

First off, a sincere thanks to you for that helpful information. I "think" that may be just what Marbeloa needs. I will be looking into it further myself for some existing sites as well as a few future sites.

    @Marbeloa
Have a look at the links provided above. And be sure to check out the demo. From the looks of it, that is exactly what you need. If you can afford to do so, I would purchase it and test it out and see if it does indeed fit your needs. If it doesn't, they offer a 30 day money back guarantee. Nothing to lose. Be sure to post back and let us know how it works out for you.

        Thanks @smartprofitmoney and @JohnyData

This is pretty much exactly what was looking for with the "video sneak preview". The only drawback is it is a theme rather than a plug-in. I already have a theme set up and would love to embed a tool that can do this. the closest plug-in I have seen is Social Locker which locks text, but not audio/video. They said they were going to develop this feature and have it live a few months back but no sign of it.

Has anyone come across a plug that the video teaser demonstrated here (play the main video for 3 seconds and the lock kicks in):
