Running IM Business on Netbook While Traveling?

I'm going to be spending 3 months abroad in Australia/NZ/Indonesia and I'm considering buying a netbook at Costco. I've been doing a lot of research regarding processor speeds, RAM, disk, etc.

I currently run my various small ventures via a Dell Inspiron 6000 (upgraded to 2GB ram). I'd rather not lug around the Dell, as I've realized that I can manage the physical size of the netbooks pretty well from using friends' netbooks.

I'm curious if anyone here has traveled for extended periods of time and been successful relying on a netbook instead of a full laptop. I figure between using a netbook for most of my tasks and heading into internet cafes with good machines for any higher end stuff needed (very little), I'll be able to manage.

Below are a few specific things I'm worried about
-doing small edits with photoshop. I'm worried that photoshop would use up a fair amount of the power of the netbook.
-creating / editing camtasia videos. I know netbooks aren't best for video editing...has anyone tried basic camtasia videos with a netbook.

Below are things I don't regularly do at all on my Dell (I outsource)
-web design / hand coding
-advanced photoshop work
-other graphic design work
-advanced video editing (i just do basic camtasia stuff)

Looking forward to your thoughts.

I figure with Costco's 90-day return policy, the worst that can happen is that I have a family member ship the Dell to Oz and I'll ship the netbook back for a return at Costco.

I don't think it would be a problem using a netbook. Photoshop and Camtasia may use a lot of resources, but as long as you don't use some of the advance options, like using a lot of layers for editing (requiring a lot of RAM), or recording/editing large videos, I think it would be good.

I have an Acer netbook with an Atom Processor. I am not sure about camstasia, but I run photoshop without trouble. I create build Wordpress sites and tweak the themes with this setup sometimes and this also good. I like the netbook when traveling because it is small and light and I haven't found any drawbacks yet.

The tiny screen is a pain in the gazitchka. I wouldn't want to have to do any web design with something where I could only see part, or what I saw was so tiny I couldn't see details.

    Two cents done.
    Good luck!

  • i use an eee netbook 100% of the time now.

when on the road it's "as is"

when I'm home I just plug in to a large monitor and a mouse

upgrading the ram is pretty cheap on these machines and you are rocking and rolling.

I use a Samsung netbook, it has a 10" screen but the keyboard is 93% the size of a normal keyboard. It has a dual atom processor, and I upgraded the ram to 2GB. It has a 160 GB hard disk. I also back up to an external hard disk which is small enough to carry as well.

I now only use this computer for all my work, and you can normally do anything on it.

      Is it the samsung NC10?

That's the one I've been researching and narrowed down to, but I can't find one available in any stores to demo (want to try keyboard size). I tried the HP 110 keyboard, which is supposedly very very similar in size/layout.

Samsung NC10 is available on costco online, so I'm thinking I'll order it after doing a final bit of research...

Any suggestions on an 11.6" that is powerful enough? I've seen the Acer AO751H, which has really nice keyboard...but the processor is 1.3GHZ which I heard is noticeably slower than the 1.6...

  • Forget Camtasia recordings on a netbook. Not as much as per the processor, but because of the tiny screen resolution (1024x600). Netbooks are OK for managing your already-existing content, but not for creating any new content.

Why not buying a small 12" laptop (1200x800 resolution)? they're not that much bulkier than 10" netbooks and you can squeeze a lot more juice off them.

  • The processor on the Acer 11.6" sucks unfortunately. The screen and keyboard are nice, but they messed it up with the processor
