Do you need a College or Uni degree to do online marketing?

I'm not stating that universities and colleges are bad, but in my opinion I think there are here for getting a good JOB.

As ENTREPRENEURS you need self education and a great mentor who is successful.

That's absolutely true; the fruits of your self-education are manifest in your post.

Unfortunately it's mixed with plenty or pure B.S. that can lead you astray, so you do need to learn how to separate out the good stuff.

A useless degree full of hot-air and theory

Allow me to be a voice of dissent. But first an analogy.

In a few states such as California, you don't need a law degree to take the bar exam or to practice law. That said, of the nearly 84,000 people who took bar exams in 2013, only 60 didn't have law degrees. (See: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/03/ed...aw-school.html)

I bring this up because just because something is technically possible doesn't mean that it's necessarily a good idea.


It's the same with online business. As many have said, you don't need a degree. But it can sure help!

Here are just three ways:

1. Education. Yes, there are lots of facts to be learned online, but reading a website or a book is very different from engaging in person with experts in their fields or even debating your fellow classmates at a bar after class. People who say you can learn everything you need to know online miss an impotant fact about business (and about life in general). It's not what you know, it's how you think. And while college isn't the only way to learn and practice thinking, for many (though certainly not all), it's a great place to start.
   
   
2. Connections. When I launched my business, the first thing I did was contact my network of friends and colleagues in order to not only spread the word but also help find synergies and opportunities. Because of my years of advanced education, this network included people in high places in business, academia, government and the non-profit sector. Do you need college to build a network? Again, no. But it sure can help!
   
   
3. Experience. In my opinion, the best way to learn business -- better than reading online and better than college -- is to do business. Now I suppose you can just take the plunge and start a business without any relevent experience. Indeed, a lot of people seem to do just that. But I think it's also no coincidence that a lot of these same people are the ones who are struggling the most to make any money. Moreover, the quality of the experience you get working on your own, jumping from shiny object to shiny object, from failure to failure is of a whole different level than if you're working at a successful business, interacting with and learning from a team of experienced colleagues. But you don't get great experience by reading WSOs. I know it's heresy to say this, but the best preparation I had for my business -- and the best mentors I've ever found -- came through the various jobs I've had. But how do you get a good job without experience? Well, it's not the only way, but one way is to... You guessed it! Go to college!
   

So again, I'm not arguing that college is a necessary prerequisite to being a successful entrepreneur. We can all think of successful entrepreneurs without advanced degrees. But for every Bill Gates who dropped out of college, there are probably 100 Sergy Brins and Larry Pages -- people who (1) were educated at college (2) networked at college and (3) used college to get relevant experience.


One more thing: In the US, the median weekly earnings for someone with a bachelor's degree is $1,137 (Source: Earnings and unemployment rates by educational attainment). I wonder how many of the people above saying things like "Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune" or "The internet contains more information than any college or university" make even $60K a year through their online businesses. My guess is a few do, but the vast majority don't even come close.

So be careful whose advice your taking when you hear things like you don't need a college education. If your goal is to struggle to make a few hundred bucks a month, maybe it's OK to learn everything from a WSO. But if you're actually trying to start a real business, different rules apply.

Yup they do -- and not just business schools. I know because my business's social media page was used as an example in a college textbook -- something which provided absolutely not business value, but which I thought was cool nonetheless!

To continue my idea, that doesn't mean formal education isn't useful. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. Plus we need doctors, architects, teachers, accountants and arguably lawyers.

And a defibrillator when your heart occasionally stops.

I've seen that quote before. Funny thing, I've never seen where Rohn ever said to skip the formal education. I always took it to mean that the fortune came from the education you got after your formal education, not instead of it.

To address the OP...

It depends.

If you want to be in business for yourself, you don't need a degree to do online marketing.

Unless and until you have a track record, getting a marketing job or going the consultant route with big companies pretty much requires some kind of credential, even if it's just to cover the hiring manager's behind.

Masters Degree in Internet Marketing ? Cool, did not know they offered that. Or is that a metaphor ?

Reminds me of the time I went horseback riding with a bunch of friends but I never told them I had never been horseback riding.

But when I got on the horse I just remembered everything I ever heard or saw about horseback riding and in the western movies.

I made the sounds, I let the horse know I was in charge, I kept an eye out for the low branches .

Now if I could be mentored by an expert in all my endeavors I would be all over it but it certainly is not required but it can save us a lot of time and learning curve.
