No, you don't... the same way you don't need a degree to start your own business offline.

No you don't. But it will be in your best interest to get a business license. Some counties in your area will require a zoning permit too, but it's a low cost fee anyway. But no, you don't need a degree to start your own business online.

I'm not stating that universities and colleges are bad, but in my opinion I think there are here for getting a good JOB.

As ENTREPRENEURS you need self education and a great mentor who is successful.

More than self education you need to be capable of learning, especially from mistakes, also determination. Good analytical skills wont hurt either.
You don't need a mentor or anyone who's successful either, could be helpful though.

And no, you don't need a degree of any kind to do IM.

You don't need a college degree to do your own online marketing. But you will likely need it if you want to work at a digital marketing agency or any company for that matters.

I'm all for education, but if you doing this for yourself, you can learn plenty here, on YouTube, or Udemy, etc.

Absolutely not -- a degree alone is just a sheet of paper. You do, however, need an equivalent level of education to excel.

The uneducated used to occasionally get lucky, but those cases are becoming even more rare.

You need to understand grammar rules (at least in a basic sense -- the web is a fairly casual place) to run a blog. You need PR knowledge to promote content. Marketing in general may seem like common sense, but it takes education to be good at it. Conversion rate optimization requires a fair bit of learning.

The good news is the best education is self-education. All the resources you need are out there for free.

I treat my self-education sessions as if I were in a classroom.

Get a notebook and a pen. Spend time reading blogs and books (ebooks are great -- go for the big ones you might find in a bookstore). Watch videos like Whiteboard Friday.

When you see something interesting, write it down. Look up terms you don't know and write them down. Make notes of techniques that sound helpful.

Treat yourself like the student you are. Review your notes later, as if you were about to take a test (you are -- this business is a constant test of your knowledge).

When I started doing this, I learned so much more. Plus, anytime I need to know specific details, my notebooks are right there.

Do this, and over time you'll learn more than a college student will. Really.

One-third of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives. 42 percent of college graduates NEVER read another book after college. [Source]

College students might learn a lot in 4 years. But a lot of that is filler and general education (ie, unrelated). In 4 years of educating yourself on a single subject, you'll know way more than they will. And in fields like this, you'll be more successful.

When it comes to certain sub-niches of affiliate marketing and online entrepreneurship, it appears the LESS FORMAL EDUCATION you have, the RICHER you become.

Well, at least, that's how it looks from my end. Many of my most successful clients, past and present, didn't graduate from college. Many didn't even attend college at all.

No, you don't need a degree; however, if you are currently enrolled, of if you want to learn skills that you don't have, I would suggest you stay in school and finish your coursework.

I have never regretted the fact that I graduated from college and graduate school.

Others have said college degrees are useless. I disagree totally.

You don't need to have a degree. I know some kids that can earn some thousand dollars per month just have graduated a high school. Some of them even couldn't write/read English. Let's choose a IM model and follow it until you're successful.

We will all say that it's important to go to college and all of that...but it seems going to college for 80% of people is unfortunately a waste of time. I went to college but somehow I can see so many people going to college with high hopes and unrealistic expectations only to end up doing some average job. Many of the people going to college are bright and smart and they would arguably achieve much more if they went after their own thing instead of working so hard to meet university requirements.

Allow me to be a voice of dissent. But first an analogy.

In a few states such as California, you don't need a law degree to take the bar exam or to practice law. That said, of the nearly 84,000 people who took bar exams in 2013, only 60 didn't have law degrees. (See: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/03/ed...aw-school.html)

I bring this up because just because something is technically possible doesn't mean that it's necessarily a good idea.

It's the same with online business. As many have said, you don't need a degree. But it can sure help!

      Here are just three ways:
      1. Education. Yes, there are lots of facts to be learned online, but reading a website or a book is very different from engaging in person with experts in their fields or even debating your fellow classmates at a bar after class. People who say you can learn everything you need to know online miss an impotant fact about business (and about life in general). It's not what you know, it's how you think. And while college isn't the only way to learn and practice thinking, for many (though certainly not all), it's a great place to start.

      2. Connections. When I launched my business, the first thing I did was contact my network of friends and colleagues in order to not only spread the word but also help find synergies and opportunities. Because of my years of advanced education, this network included people in high places in business, academia, government and the non-profit sector. Do you need college to build a network? Again, no. But it sure can help!

      3. Experience. In my opinion, the best way to learn business -- better than reading online and better than college -- is to do business. Now I suppose you can just take the plunge and start a business without any relevent experience. Indeed, a lot of people seem to do just that. But I think it's also no coincidence that a lot of these same people are the ones who are struggling the most to make any money. Moreover, the quality of the experience you get working on your own, jumping from shiny object to shiny object, from failure to failure is of a whole different level than if you're working at a successful business, interacting with and learning from a team of experienced colleagues. But you don't get great experience by reading WSOs. I know it's heresy to say this, but the best preparation I had for my business -- and the best mentors I've ever found -- came through the various jobs I've had. But how do you get a good job without experience? Well, it's not the only way, but one way is to... You guessed it! Go to college!
So again, I'm not arguing that college is a necessary prerequisite to being a successful entrepreneur. We can all think of successful entrepreneurs without advanced degrees. But for every Bill Gates who dropped out of college, there are probably 100 Sergy Brins and Larry Pages -- people who (1) were educated at college (2) networked at college and (3) used college to get relevant experience.

One more thing: In the US, the median weekly earnings for someone with a bachelor's degree is $1,137 (Source: Earnings and unemployment rates by educational attainment). I wonder how many of the people above saying things like "Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune" or "The internet contains more information than any college or university" make even $60K a year through their online businesses. My guess is a few do, but the vast majority don't even come close.

So be careful whose advice your taking when you hear things like you don't need a college education. If your goal is to struggle to make a few hundred bucks a month, maybe it's OK to learn everything from a WSO. But if you're actually trying to start a real business, different rules apply.

Yup they do -- and not just business schools. I know because my business's social media page was used as an example in a college textbook -- something which provided absolutely not business value, but which I thought was cool nonetheless!

wow, that's a long text haha

        Thank you for your time

From all of what I've read (I appreciate it a lot, thnx again ) I can evaluate that having a degree does not harm you. Nevertheless, in my opinion if you are an online marketer the university is within the internet. Your success is your certificate. There are so many courses out there, in which people teach others from THEIR experience in the online space. You interact with so many people in forums blogs and in other programs if you are involved in them. So, education, experience and connection is also there.

In my opinion going to a university is a GUARANTEE for getting a good JOB and elevating your status.

Wait, before you judge me and say "are you accusing that universities are BS?"

        No, not at all.

I just said that it's a great place to elevate your position and yes, you get great education.
You can even start your own business afterwards. You can also start a business without a degree, but then you will have to work hard and put everything into it. No plan B. Everything depends on yourself because if you quit then it WILL be hard for you to get a good job because they want to see evidence, which in this case is to have a degree.

I think however, that most of the entrepreneurs in the online space want to be independent and they are willing to do anything UNTIL it works. despite the fact whether they have a degree or not.

Thank you again for your long text. I was literally like O_o haha

It is not important that you have or, have not a degree to do the online marketing. But it is too much important that do you have the knowledge to do the work? if you have enough knowledge to do the work, you can start the work without any degree. Thanks for your asking...

You do not need a degree and I would actually advise getting a degree to do online marketing.

Most teaching tends to restrict your out of the box thinking. You are taught that there is the right and wrong way of doing things. This can be a problem when it comes to professions like marketing because although the fundamentals are important, there is no right or wrong way when it comes to marketing that guarantees success every time.

The most successful people I've met in my 10 years in the marketing space are usually the hustlers. The college and high school drop outs that aren't afraid to take a little risk and try something new. They shoot for the stars while everyone else is looking for the 'comfort zone' living and never really had that drive to begin with.

Nope. Much of marketing is common sensing and you'd learn a lot more by doing instead of sitting down learning and theorising.

I couldn't stand college as there's a perpetual anti-business/marketing/capitalism sentiment and it was detrimental to my morale as an entrepreneur. Even with the business professors.. but again I was in a Canadian course lol..

To continue my idea, that doesn't mean formal education isn't useful. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. Plus we need doctors, architects, teachers, accountants and arguably lawyers.

You don't need college or uni to do online marketing. What you need is education. It doesn't matter if it's a traditional education or if you learn it yourself

Here in the Netherlands you always need at least a Bachelor Degree in marketing / Communication for a job in digital marketing. Or you need proof of experience if you have worked successfully in this industry.

If you want to be a work at home CEO. You only need some cans of monster energy and laptop with internet connection.

All that you need is self education and guidelines from those who must have been in the business before you.

    Regards.

I have a degree in Business and a Master's Degree in Internet Marketing. Yet, most of what I know came from experimenting throughout the years. My degrees look pretty good on my wall, though. I like looking at them.

I've seen that quote before. Funny thing, I've never seen where Rohn ever said to skip the formal education. I always took it to mean that the fortune came from the education you got after your formal education, not instead of it.

      To address the OP...

      It depends.

If you want to be in business for yourself, you don't need a degree to do online marketing.

Unless and until you have a track record, getting a marketing job or going the consultant route with big companies pretty much requires some kind of credential, even if it's just to cover the hiring manager's behind.

You don't need a degree to do internet marketing.

    What you do need is:

    A) Some form of training in the field of marketing / business you're trying to get into
    B) Start up funds - for your online business and your personal living expenses
    C) Network - who you know can unlock doors in the online world

Reminds me of the time I went horseback riding with a bunch of friends but I never told them I had never been horseback riding.

But when I got on the horse I just remembered everything I ever heard or saw about horseback riding and in the western movies.

I made the sounds, I let the horse know I was in charge, I kept an eye out for the low branches .

Now if I could be mentored by an expert in all my endeavors I would be all over it but it certainly is not required but it can save us a lot of time and learning curve.

I did a degree as a mature student, and doing it was one of the most boring things I have ever endured. However, I leaned some pretty useful skills which are transferable in all aspects of working online. Writing well, communication skills, being organized and methodical are vital in any business. If you can perfect those, it makes life easier!

I would say you don't need a degree but with your head clued in on internet marketing, it will be a massive added advantage. It will be huge, It will be the best thing you would have ever done! I highly recommend University graduates to take a very goo look at Online Business, they have quite a lot to offer and believe they will do extremely well!

Check out Chris Record's Internet Marketing college.

It will be launched this summer I think.

It's the education that we internet marketers are missing in the traditional world.

Re: Do you need a College or Uni degree to do online marketing?
No you don't. There are lots of online tutorials and courses that will enable you to learn online marketing. However, if you are marketing your brand or yourself, a college degree will be helpful for your credibility.

  • You don't even need a high school education, I have spoken with many people who graduated with marketing degrees who are clueless to what goes on online, they learn from theories while we learn from experience. There is no beating that and besides why spend thousands on a college degree when you can learn the same things for way less?

Definitely not. That is one of the benefits of the net - it is "the great equalizer" - giving people with limited resources a chance to "make it."

I would go as far as saying that having a college degree might very well be a hindrance in this area as a degree holder, because of his/her training, might be inclined to over-analyze things and not actually take action.
