Is it necessary to build a brand to be successful in internet marketing?

What I mean is, is it necessary to be a guru in whatever you are marketing, or would just being a salesman suffice..?

Building a brand helps but it is not necessary - there are multiple millionaire marketers out there without a brand. A few affiliate and CPA marketers did it but along the way they realized they were missing out on a huge revenue stream by NOT branding themselves.

While you don't need to build a brand, it certainly helps a lot.

Good branding helps you get exposure, makes you appear as an authority on the matter, and can lead to increased sales conversions.

With that being said, you can still make money without a brand but in comparison, it will be much harder to build a substantial income.

No. I make money everyday online and I have no brand. Of course a brand would mean more conversions, but it's not essential to make money online.

You cap your growth potential without it.

There are many ways to build a brand however - it ranges for having great products and being savvy at selling/marketing them and your brand will build on its own (to the point where you may be one day surprised you are getting asked to speak, interview, or be involved in publicity)

Key to me is follow the right order:

    1. Find the target market you want to serve for next few years
    2. Offer them tremendous value (personality, benefits, information, entertain...)
    3. Figure out what your market likes BEST about you...
    4. Craft that into a brand that plays on your strengths and expands the reach of your story into your market backed by your early market penetration

As Jeff so eloquently pointed out, you are not taking full advantage of your own potential if you focus on "one and done" sales and never try to establish your brand.

Most successful, experienced business owners will tell you that making repeat sales to loyal customers that have already purchased from you is much easier and much more profitable than always chasing after new prospects. And with repeat sales, usually the price increases so you make more per sale.

Branding yourself and your business so that potential buyers recognize you and know your quality can do nothing but help your marketing.

Why do the most successful marketers tend to always seem to come out with new, but related products? It's because they want to sell something else to their loyal customers.

You choose what path you want to follow. Do you want to always be prospecting with low end offers?

Yup. Or more reasonable, a really good marketer.

Your job online is to market the heck out of a product. Never get attached to a product or niche. If you want to become a guru, it will happen over time when everybody in your niche knows who you are and respects you.

IMO both can work. Building a brand would help selling your own products.

    Great Question.

I see it from so many angles really.

The owner of Plenty Of Fish quietly made huge bank behind the scenes for years.

Same with the original owner of this very forum Allen Says.

I have heard some marketers regret that they built their business on their actual names because it made it more difficult to transfer ownership of their business once they wanted to move on.

Not to say it still can not be done but a more catchy general domain name may have more value later.

But do not think for a minute that Mr./Mrs Guru is not also involved in some other niches like maybe sex niche etc. Happens all the time.

We all know Eben Pegan made upwards of 20 Million in the Dating niche as "David DeAngelo". That was a brand and now "Eben Pegan is a Brand and who knows what other "Brands" he could have had across other niches as well.

I myself have sold Branded Businesses/products and then just started from scratch but you kinda give up alot if you are branded across social media and for example your Flippa Account where you have built up trust and credibility.

So really there are advantages and "things to consider" with each scenario.

It is not necessary but it is advisable. How can you make your product popular if it has no brand? It will definitely help your product in selling more.

Be a salesman and go out and sell; You can brand but not necessary. If you want to do other things in Life besides building a life consuming brandable business ...then just sell , sell, sell make your money and go homes
