Unlike when blogs first hit the scene and were few and far between, nowadays we are flooded with blogs on each and every topic you could imagine. Everyone is a leader in their field, each with a decisive and informed point of view. This is the world you are heading into – and like any battle, it’s good to be prepared.
We’ve got some simple tips to check off your list before you enter the big wide world of blogging.
1. Know Your Subject Matter
Pretty simple to start with huh – write about what you know! There is no point floundering on topics that you have either no interest or knowledge in. No matter what the subject matter – if you have found yourself your little niche that you excel in, get blogging about it.
2. Take Great Photos
A picture says a thousand words – so learn how to take a great one! Our smartphones and the endless world of image apps make taking a great photo a much easier task than it was five years ago. No longer do we need to be professional photographers to get a good shot. (Thank you filters).
3. Be Spontaneous, Yet Have a Plan
There is nothing better than waking in the middle of the night when a creative streak hits and getting your thoughts down. Take those moments of spontaneity and run with them. Yet in the background, make sure you have a goal you are heading towards, or an overarching model you are working with in your blog. It will help keep your message and tone consistent with your readers.
4. Give Credit
If you are quoting another blogger or referencing their material, be sure to give credit – just do it. It’s blogging law.
5. Beef Up Your Blog Before Going Live
Get a good stockpile of articles on your blog before you advertise it to the world. No one wants to head to your blog to read the same first article. You’ve just lost a reader.
6. Think Outside the Box
Blogging is an amazing way to express yourself and your opinions – so don’t be afraid to push the envelope. Explore topics that intrigue, entertain, inspire and educate you. Chances are if it challenges you, it will challenge your readers.
7. Keep a Notepad and Pen Handy (or your phone)
Ideas can strike at any time, so be prepared.
8. Post Quality Content, Not Noise
Only post articles you feel have worth. Otherwise, keep the white noise. It’s better to post quality over quantity any day.
9. Get Sociable and Share!
Get your blog out there amongst your social networks. Get involved in your blogging community, comment on others’ blogs and get involved in the conversations. If you are a worthy and active participant, the more likely people are to read and share your blog with others.
Last but not least – just make a start!
You’ll never know until you try...
