How do we make our domains show up as www.abcsite.com vs http://abcsite.com?

I have a reseller account and noticed some of my sites are dont have the www.abcsite.com. Instead they have just http://. I was curious how do we have it show up as www.abcsite.com? I want my sites to be indexed with www.abcsite.com vs the other. Just curious what I am doing wrong when setting the sites up that it shows that way and not the other.

Thanks,
Jason

Great question and it's something a lot of people fail to implement which results in SEO problems.

Here's an article which explains how to do it... How to 301 Redirect Non-WWW to WWW URLs|StepForth Web Marketing Inc.

You can tell Google via Webmaster Tools how you want them to be indexed. You can also use htaccess files to make this change universal. Take a look at the default Drupal htaccess file, and just take the www/non-www part out of it to make your own. If you're using Wordpress, go to Settings -> General, and configure WordPress address (URL) to make it what you want. This can clash with the htaccess file, so if you're specifying the www version in htaccess and the non-www version in WP (default), you'll get redirect errors, so choose one. I recommend leaving it out of htaccess if you're using WP.

If you are just starting out, make sure to create all links with the www. And if possible, try to get all incoming links to have the www as well.

Also, Google's webmaster tools will help you get the www with a great majority of your organic traffic.

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

Allen, I have submitted my sitemap to google and it is showing up in the serps now. However, it doesn't even have the http let alone www. It show up like mysite.com and that is it. Any idea how to fix this? I am using wordpress on my own domain.

It never shows with the http. http is not part of your site's name. It is the protocol the browser uses to connect to your site.

For the www part, it is also not neccessary, but since you want it to show, set it in Google's webmaster tools and use the 301 redirect as was pointed out earlier.

Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools and you will see a place to do it. Lots of good tools there.

lilgrace - Double check the website address and blog address located in the General Settings section in your WP Admin. You will probably have to recreate your sitemap and resubmit to Google.

I usually just set a wildcard in DNS, and then my hosting account also if needed.
