I have/had the following types of sites:

Drop Shipping Stores
Software Sales
eBook Stores
Infoproduct Sites
Membership Sites (non-adult)

Making a profit is pretty easy to do if you follow a tried-and-true path. Trying to do it without help or without following a good plan that has been pioneered by others is pretty tough.

For stores the best path is to go for good search engine position for the products you are selling. Follow up by building a list in your niche and doing email marketing of your products to that niche.

In non-store sites getting the support of the mega-site owners in your niche and following up with email marketing has worked well for me.

If you follow a tried-and-true path, you will make money. It may not be much money at first, however. That's where a lot of people fail. Try something (maybe not even doing it right), it doesn't work first time, give up, try something else, rinse and repeat.

There are always success stories here. There is a thread on the front page right now - Overview of My First Money-Making Month In IM: 2830 Dollars

That sounds pretty dang successful. Read the first post in that thread, and you have your success story - plus a nice little method to follow!

All you need to think about is:

1) Are you promoting products that will convert?
2) Are you focussing on a keyword/keywords that you have a chance of ranking well for (if you are going for organic traffic)?
3) Does/do the keyword(s) that you focus on have a high enough search volume to make sales? Are they buying keywords?
4) Have you done your SEO properly?
5) Does your site look professional and convert?

That's it!

Biggest problem that I see is that people try and sell what they want to sell and do not allow the competition and market to drive their choice of product(s)/niche.

If you fulfill 1) to 5) you will make sales. If you don't you'll hardly make any. If you feel that you can fulfill these then keep trying. If not, or you have already tried, then give up and move onto a different niche.

Yes, I do agree. Most important thing is Focus and Take Action. I have seen many people are still sitting on the fence waiting for the so-call right timing. If you do not take action, there will be no result. Even if you have failed once or twice, don't be despair instead learn the lesson and improve. There is always a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow as long as you are determined to succeed.

For your info, I have failed many times and lost more than $20,000. But I am still here learning the ropes and taking action all the time.

There are many online businesses around and you should be carefully what you choose to do.
All of them will promise you a A LOT OF TIME in NO TIME! But that's the catch...
Whatever you decide to do, do not expect to get anything for free - no work no money!
You always have to put some effort into your decision and it's never "brain-dead-simple".
But, and now it comes: But you can get successful and you will if you try hard enough. But don't expect it overnight...

So go through this forum and read what people say about their experience - you will learn a lot.

Yes. It's no different from selling things offline. The internet is just a different medium. In order to make money online, you have to:

1. Have something to sell that there's actually a demand for.

2. Have a way of consistently getting people who want that product to come to your website.

3. Have a way of converting those website visitors into buyers.

If you do each of those three things, you can't NOT make money. Each of those topics has been covered extensively on this forum.

  I'm very much a newbie to trying to get a foot in the door here also, but it has to work...for my boring day job i talk to tons of people everyday and I have to collect their occupation info. So many of them work from home...It has made me so jealous that I am now convinced that by trial and error, and lots of studying there's lots of opportunity to make a living...
