Digital Marketing: Plan For Success In 2016

If you want to see an increase in the success from your digital marketing efforts this year, one of the most important steps will be to start with a plan. A study from Smart Insights found that a whopping 44% of businesses are investing in digital marketing, without any type of plan or strategy in place.

Why Is Having A Plan Critical To My Success?

I'm so glad you asked! There are countless reasons, but we'll discuss the biggest ones.

If you don't have plan, you lack direction. How can you have a cohesive, sensible digital marketing strategy when there is no plan in place? What are the goals, and expected outcomes? How much should you invest? How do you know what's working? What type of digital marketing should you be doing?

All of these questions need to be answered, if you want to have a successful campaign -- and you can't answer them without a plan.

Let's say you started with some PPC, SMM and SEO. You're investing in Google Adwords, Facebook ads, and have a guy who's performing some search engine optimization. You're 6 months in and you've spent plenty of money. You really can't afford to keep going at this pace, and would like to scale back in at least one area, if not two. So, which campaign is delivering the best ROI? Which ones aren't working -- and why not? Maybe you can't afford to continue, because your campaigns aren't performing as well as they should be. But unless you're analyzing the results against expected outcomes, and using tactical strategy to understand the why behind the results, you will never really know. You will blindly cut out one or two things that "aren't working", when some basic analysis and optimization could have changed everything.

How Do I Create A Digital Strategy?

Hopefully at this point you're seeing the value in having a digital strategy. Here are some basic, easy-to-implement planning tips to get you started.

Set Goals

Figure out what the end goal is. Is it to increase sales? Maybe you'd like to sell more of one particular product, or position yourself as an industry leader in the local market place. Whatever your goal is, figure it out and make sure everything you do has that end goal in mind.

Find Your Funnel
Understanding your sales and marketing funnel is very important. You need to think about your ideal customers, and create a road-map of their buying cycles. How do you get a potential customer from the awareness stage, to the action stage? There are multiple steps along the way.

Define Your CTA
What is your Call to Action? Ultimately, what action do you need people to take? This comes back to understanding what your goal is. An effective CTA will cause your customers to continue down your marketing funnel and get one step closer to making that purchase.

A Lead Magnet Is A Must
If you want potential customers to hand over the email addresses, you've got to give them something valuable in exchange for it. Whether it's a free e-book or a 25% discount coupon, you've got to give away something for free that will bring people in, and get them farther down your funnel.

Bring In Traffic
Content marketing, social media marketing, website optimization, and pay-per-click advertising are all ways you can bring a steady stream of users to your website. You've got to focus on bringing people in, in a measurable and consistent way. Know your numbers, and make changes to tweak and optimize along the way.

Good luck, and happy planning!

Those are excellent tips dansilvestre! Bravo.

I pretended I was a total newbie when I read them and now I realize why so many people struggle for weeks, months, and years.

It would all still seem like a foreign language.

If you are a total newbie to internet marketing how can you have a plan? You probably just want some supplemental income if we view it realistically.

Now that newbie wonders into the WSO forest and never finds their way out.

Unfortunately marketing is vast and diverse there is really no master plan and no one size fits all in skills, budget, ethics, speed of learning, on an on.

It is weird we almost need to create an eBook just on how to begin learning.

I guess a person needs to take inventory of where they are and what their resources are what they want to accomplish long term. And sometimes those things do not match in any way.

If you have low budget you have to adopt a strategy just for that.

If you have budget and you are fearless but scientific that can be the best start.

I say scientific not to scare anyone but only because you really need to test and tweak in order to get the best bang for your bucks.

    Some people love everything video.
    Some prefer anything social media.

Some like to be in front of a camera some behind it.

Some may have passion for something they can match with a hot buying market and some may have only a passion for incoming sales of any type.

So if I started today what would I do.....(scratches head)

If totally new I guess I would familiarize myself with the basic definition of marketing and the various methods to do it.

    Try to absorb the terminology.

Try to learn from people even indirectly that are where you want to be.

Observe all the marketing methods being promoted to YOU. Not as a consumer but as a researcher.

Follow sales funnels just to learn from them.

Join groups of like minded individuals.

Do not be afraid to invest in tools and training that will assist you in your goals.

Take advantage of the vast ocean of free knowledge available online.

Realize when you are really working and totally wasting time online.

When you feel buying emotions kick in from being sold to either from a sales page, email title or even offline..take notes on why...tap into that, use it for your own marketing.

If something makes YOU want to pull out your credit card..that is a lesson in marketing you should pay attention to.

No matter how much I type I am only scratching the surface but I hope this gives people a little better insight because sometimes we just throw terms and strategies out there that may not resonate or connect with the people who need that info the most.

Great content you have shared. Without the define strategies we will never get success for long time. We need to find customers than investors. Great efforts i appreciate.
