I do mine with irfanview and OpenOffice draw, and public domain pics.
Cut, past, crop, add, let other people see them, after they get slammed to heck and
back I do it over. By the second or third one I get the one people like. LOL.

Go get GIMP which is a free-ware version of photo-shop, learn how to use it and you can make e-book covers, CD-covers, web-site banners, etc. It has a bit of a learning curve but is well worth it as you will save a ton of money over your IM buisnees lifetime.

MarK Monciardini's CoverActionPro (version 1) is what I use. There's a brand new version recently release. This software tends to be pricey (I paid $97 for version 1). Version 2 is a lot more, I believe. But it is worth every penny because you get to create your own graphical representations for any number of your own products (including ebooks, audio/video products, membership cards, etc.).

If you are not a creative type, there are video instructions that come with it and show you step-by-step how to use the cover actions in Photoshop.

You must have Photoshop version 7 or higher and, again, the older version (1) costs $97. Version 2 is awesome but I don't think I'll get it because despite all the bells and whistles, I don't need it at at this point.

Awesome software ... even for a newbie. Produces absolutely professional, high-resolution covers in spectacular colors.

I don't know if Mark has taken the first version off the market but you can visit the site at coveractionpro.com (this is not an affiliate link).

    Hope this helps!

Why don't you use a designer here to do it ?? Just search the forum for ebook cover or ebook designer. Ben Pei just did some great work for me and he's a great guy easy to get along with and if you use grail he is almost always avail. to chat.

I was in the some position you are in a couple weeks ago. I checked around and figured what the heck I'd give it a go. Im glad I did, I now have a new addition to the team.

I'm a picky guy and he did several revisions far me @ no charge-until we got it right. I also got a discount for having several things done (2 banners an ebook and a site)

Here is a link to his "for hire" thread

You can pick up an Ecover Creator program in most of the giveaways. I then use Gimp which is free for editing my ecover. Not perfect but does a basic job

l'll advise you not to use a free e-cover creator for something you intend to sell as a professional work that will carry your name.

Consult those who could do a professional work of it and get it done through them for a cheaper rate than what the elance or guru people would have charged you.

      Give this a deep thought.

The latest version of GIMP (2.6) can do layering, reflection, skew, and a million other different filters plus there are tons of plug-ins and other filters you can get. With practice you can do anything in GIMP you can do in Photoshop. Plus there are several other programs for simpler things such as "PaintStar" (also free). You can take a picture of an actual real manual and then use gimp to make it look better (ie: more real looking) than some of these generational programs. once you get it done, you keep it and just change the layers with your specific graphic/log/text for different e-books.

You want to make it look real because AB tests are showing that as people get more used to seeing these covers, they like the real looking covers better.

Obviously if budget is not a factor, then by all means save your most valuable asset - time and get a pro from here to do it, but learning GIMP (or Photoshop if you have it) is a highly valuable skill.

I would recommend box shot 3d if you do not have photoshop

if you have photoshop go for smart objects or action scripts that can help you do the job.

If you have templates you can also easily create ecovers using gimp or sumo paint by using the perspective tool

    Hi JJ,

You can use photoshop, if you have it and know how to use it.

Otherwise, use some of the great warriors in the for hire section to do it for you.

    I prefer outsourcing, honestly.
