how can i work online during my university studies?

Hey everyone
I wondered if I can work online beside my studies . I have only about 1 or 2 hours of free time per day .
I will graduate after 3 years so my plan is to learn digital marketing during this period to be professional when I finish my studies and start to earn money online beside my original job ,is it a good plan?

if I can't enter this field now how can I update my information till I graduate.

You are better off than many marketers who have day jobs at the same time a family to look after... have you heard of a marketer who's doing online business or coding after a long day job while carrying a 4 months old baby? 1-2 hours free time per day amounted to around 12 hours per week, it may increase if you add listening to audiobooks while driving, toilet university, while waiting for your college professor, etc. so many ways to do it so yes it is a very good plan. Goodluck.

Spending a couple of those hours exploring the world of Internet marketing sounds like a good idea. Don't try to take on too much though. You don't want to be so starstruck by the shiny internet marketing world that you forget your university studies.

My suggestion would be to have just one thing that you are studying or trying out at any given time. As they say, slow and steady usually wins out in the end.

Sure you can but part time.

Which work do you do best? Do you have experienced or samples works to show? These are just samples questions they might ask you. You can post your resume to upwork.com, elance, outsourcely, or forums with jobs wanted on their topic.

I don't have any experience yet in IM field but I like to start by seo techniques and earning money from Google Adsense. then I hope to post my resume to upwork and other freelancing websites.
      Thank you for your answer

Well, that should be okay if you have the skills and employ people to work for you.
It won't happen overnight, sometime you may have to put in more time and forgo somethings.

In this case, i recommend you try freelancing.
It gives you time and you complete task at your own will
and reject jobs you don't have time for.

Perhaps Fiverr will be a great place to start.

Fiverr should be a great choice, since it's mostly based on doing tasks that don't take much time. But working on Fiverr will not give him that much experience he would gain when exploring other fields of IM.
1-2 hours a day is enough to learn and do many things, managing your own blog + social media accounts(especially with buffer) is easily doable in 2 hours and that would probably be the best choice, but you have to decide what is it that you will work on, some things would take more time to complete(like constantly writing articles and updating your website), some less (like writing reviews that you don't have to update very often). But there is obviously more choices than that, you could perhaps start a nice blog about whatever you're studying right now?
You said you want to try AdSense, from what I've heard most people don't earn very much from it, also the rates have dropped down not long ago. Think about what you're good at that you could sell, directly or indirectly, you can monetize virtually anything.

Make sure your studies are your top priority. Learning about Internet marketing can become addictive so set a limit of 1 hour per day (or whatever time you choose) to be online.

There are many, many ways you could do this. Here is just approach for you:

Start a blog about your chosen career path (major subject) at the university. You'll have plenty of topics for your blog posts because you will be exposed to lots of ideas at the university. Be sure to begin a subscriber list for all those that visit your blog. Get their email addresses and their permission for you to send them emails about this subject.

Starting and maintaining a blog will help you to stay in touch with the online business world. It will help you to learn about business and marketing. Engage your readers as you focus on one specific topic. You will learn alot about your major field of study and at the same time you will learn something about online blogging and doing business.

If you eventually decide not to do Internet marketing, you will still have learned alot about your career subject.

If you decide after graduation that you want to do IM full time, you will already have online web site experience, a subscriber list, and authority in your chosen field of study.

    The very best to you,

    Hi Amr,

I'm sorry my response was so blunt - but I just can't imagine even considering ANY entrepreneurial endeavor without first having a commitment to being successful.

    No "wondering" allowed.

I think that success in any entrepreneurial endeavor requires a certain mindset.
If you don't have the confidence going in... then you have to at least have determination.

In online marketing, it's difficult to "learn" without actually doing it. It's the only way to actually "grade" yourself and gauge your progress.

A couple of hours per day is enough to start, but be almost fanatical about it. Schedule your time, stick to your schedule, and set goals for yourself so you know how well you are doing. It's OK to review your plan on a quarterly basis, and adjust the plan if necessary, but during each quarter, do everything you can to stay on schedule with regard to your goals. If needed, make the extra hours to get back on schedule when necessary.

Hold yourself to a higher standard than your professors require of you.
They don't have any skin in the game.

To work online while you're still in school, you have to do short Gigs, like some of those on Fiverr. The best type of gigs for your situation are the automated gigs, such as SEO.

There are many students that blog too, earning small income through affiliate and adsense links place on their blogs.

Stay away from creative services as these are very time consuming.

'Digital marketing' doesn't explain what you intend to establish and sell.

Promotion is the second step. The first is manifesting a product or rendering ability to provide a service.

You can figure out if / how you can do things when you have more of an idea of what you want to do.

  • I have done this and it worked well for me. Most of the affiliate marketers here also have day time jobs so yes, spending a few hours a week online can certainly help you achieve your goal. You have to take note that there are a lot of ways you can earn online. Besides affiliate marketing, you can also put up a blog and monetize it. You may also look at several online jobs in Upwork or Fiverr. Good luck!

If you really took it serious your internet marketing would become a full time income for you. That could be very distracting to your studies.

I would not even pursue it if you do not see yourself making it worthwhile in a shorter amount of time.

Some of my most productive days were while I was in Grad school.
BUT I already knew my craft while I was there. I was not just
learning about it. So I was writing copy while writing term papers
at the same time. I had to do a brain shift but I was able to support
my family while I was in school which is not a bad place to be in.

One of my most challenging project was a $19K job and the discipline
of school got me through that project.

It depends on what classes you are taking. When I first started IM, I took some classes related to what I wanted to learn, such as computer graphics, HTML, business, marketing, etc.

I was building my first web site at the time and used that as my projects for a number of classes, killing a few birds with one stone. If you're taking programming classes, you could create a program to sell and also use it for class projects.

Hello Amr, here's my opinion for what it's worth.

Firstly I don't want to disagree with Sid, but I think you might be in a great position to achieve great results.

Sid (hi Sid!) is correct in that you have to put a lot of time, energy and sometimes money into a project, but the thing about working online is that it's very forgiving in that you can make many mistakes and also, compared to many offline businesses which can need a huge amount of investment.

Being limited by time can be positive in that you really have to focus on what's important and not be distracted.

    Good luck

I tried to "soften" my initial response by explaining it further in a subsequent reply.

Your addition here is important. It is very inexpensive to get started, but that doesn't mean that you should do so tentatively.

Amr stated that he only had 1-2 hours per day to commit to the effort, and while that is doable for many, I think that setting limits before you even get started is a sign that maybe one is not as committed as he/she needs to be.

If you really want it... why place any restrictions on yourself going in?
      If you don't... why bother?

Make sure you schedule out some time every day and don't become to carried away with it, otherwise it will eat into your studies and become overwhelming. Start up a blog and just start by writing some quality content thats congruent with your current studies. You want to be splitting your time between your actual writing and learning the fundamentals of the business that are going to drive you forward, such as Copy and SEO ect. Just be sure to gain a little everyday and watch it grow exponentially. Have fun with it.

I'm surprised that affiliate marketing does not figure more prominently in the advice you've been getting. It's an ideal way to get started with working part-time while building your online business, provided that you also build a list while you're at it.

You can work an hour or two on it daily, adding pieces to your project as you go.

I'd start by finding a niche you want to focus on, picking a promising product to promote, and then set up the opt-in form and pre-sell report for that product (and others like it).

Then get it set up, and start promoting it. Once you have the first product set up, do the same for the second one, and the third one, etc. If you pick products that will work in the long term, you really can build a business that way.

    What about selling your services?

Sure, that's the fastest way to making some money, but you'll be selling your time for money, and you only have so much of that. If you do need quick money, you could use some of your time for services (and yes, Fiverr could work there), and also work on setting up your affiliate projects.

Eventually, you could also create your own products... and by the time you graduate, you could have a healthy online business going!

Of course there's a lot more to it. I'd start by learning about affiliate marketing and getting a blog set up...

    Good luck!

I was surprised, as well. Apparently most of the responses are from those with online "jobs" rather than online businesses.

If one focuses on "piecework", they're still trading time for money, and there are only 24 hours in a day. If they are providing that piecework online - they still have to market those services to get clients.

Products (yours or someone else's) can be sold over and over again... services cannot.

    I have two suggestions for you;

    1. If you are good designer, marketer, or web designer, you can offer some services on freelance website like fiverr.com, You can generate small income and create a list of actives clients

    2. From my experience in online marketing, I believe there is a huge opportunity into list building,
So look for a niche (Wealth, Health & Fitness, I.M, etc..), when you decide which niche is best for you, you can build a mailing list that you can use later to promote affiliate products, your own products as well or you can sell solo ads with other internet marketer.

Wish you best of luck in your studies...
