How to Protect Content on My Blog

Hey Whistler,

Unfortunately, it's the nature of the beast.

Content locking or a subscription model would be a way to semi-protect the content, but it could still be shared after the fact. You can use right click etc. blocking plugins --> they won't stop all of the piracy, but they can limit it to some degree.

These are a couple of the popular choices, one of them was recently updated.

The practice of boldly branding your content *may* slow a few pirates down, and/or give your brand exposure when it is pilfered.

If you put it on the net, chances are, someone is gonna get it.

Sadly, there's nothing you can do to 100% protect yourself. I always like to give the example of JK Rowling who, for a long time, refused to publish Harry Potter as ebooks because she was so afraid of piracy. The irony is that within days of a new book release (in hardcover), the entire novel would be online in ebook form because people were scanning the pages.

One of the easiest ways to see if someone is using your content is to copy/paste a snippet of your blog post into google. The results will show every web page that your content is on. My professors in college did this to catch cheaters and it worked surprisingly well.

Some sites(wattpad for exmaple) have a "feature" that disables both "right click" and the ability to select the text on any page. There could be plugins or scripts that allow you to do that. People could still rewrite the whole text if they wanted but that would take a lot of time.
Other method could be a membership site.

Forum Tip #1: Reading at least a few posts on a thread before you reply can be quite beneficial for all involved.

IMO, not reading post #2 on a 3 post thread prior to submitting a reply *could* or *should* be a bannable offense depending on your other contributions here. Stiffening things up around here for a while, to set an example for those that follow, would not be a bad thing.

Most of the time I do read previous posts before responding, this was one of the times when I didn't(was in a rush), my bad

It doesn't happen too often to me so I wouldn't be worried, I'd be more worried about people not even reading the original post and answering copy-paste texts depending on keywords in the title, that is a bigger problem and happens a lot.

But I do get your point, it's good that you're aiming to increase the overall quality of the threads/posts on this forum

Please click the little red report triangle when you see an instance of that sot of spam (or any spam) on the threads.

In general you have to put yourself out there in order to be seen. This means that sometimes someone might nick your posts and your ideas. As painful as this might be, in the broad sense of things, you are probably better served creating more content and posting it in more places so that your branding is what people see.

I certainly do not condone anyone stealing your ideas; that is wrong, it is only a matter of where your time is better spent.

Thanks guys. Sadly, i think i just have to resign to it then. Makes me sad though. I try to attach links but i understand that the wordpress editor strips these links when you copy/paste content. Thanks again. I just have to keep writing.

This can be circumvented like most things, but....

You can get links to stick on copy and pastes with some code.

With the technique below, you are creating a wordpress plugin that you upload to your site.

I know someone has a decent plugin available that does this, unfortunately I don't seem to have the link handy.

Anyway, peeps can always strip it out later, but at least it creates a bit more work for them...and a few pirates may not care.

I'm not sure if that particular code is still perfectly valid, but I see this being done by many major sites all over the net. A little time spent at wordpress.org or on Google should point you to other similar options.

The best way to protect content on your blog to make them copyright and you can also put some security or lock it i.e by password or by any other techniques.You can also protect them by adding the clear re usage of information in your blog.

Don't trust the plugins that claim they disable right click etc... All a person has to do is disable javascript and the right click works again. Also they can still grab the article by saving the page or using Evernote Clipper.

All these plugins do is give you a false sense of security.

You can never be 100% like several people has said here, but two things I do are:

1. Make sure your canonical tags are set properly to cover yourself from scrapers

2. Add the following css to prevent manual copying of your texts:

p {
-webkit-user-select: none;
-khtml-user-select: none;
-moz-user-select: none;
user-select: none;
}

If you already did this, then I'm afraid I can't help you

Honestly you could install plugins all day long, any hacker for that matter can right click on your page source, lol and grab your content.

Early on I used to worry about this. Back in 2012 and below you could type in a search and multiple duplicate pages would show up, I'm not shore if you guys remember.

But google has cracked down on that and continuously works hard to de-index and ban domains that engage in black hat tactics. I.E content spinning, content scraping.

Google records who pings their content first to their search engine as it leaves a digital footprint. Once done google compares your content to billions of records online and serves up the copy of the original source.

If you are that paranoid my advice once you make your content is to submit/ping your article or blog post to google then have google re-index your content through google webmaster tools.

This is just the mere opinion of a lowly human, but here goes:

Don't worry about it. Don't overthink it.

By the time your content is online and someone else republishes it, Google will have already acknowledged your version as the original.

If someone tries to sell it as PLR or whatever else, what are the chances he'll succeed? This person is too lazy to perform real work and real marketing. I highly doubt he'll be able to move any copies for a penny.

Just keep writing away and be proud that someone thinks so highly of your work, even in a misguided way.

Hey Epic,

I deal in images....when someone pirates an image of mine it devalues the image, it can eventually costs me google image search results, and if I brand the image then more pirates know exactly where the pirate ship is ported.

After being pirated many, many, many tens of thousands of times over the past 14 years I am so proud I could whup some damn pirate a$$.

I first heard the proud BS back in early 2000s...I didn't buy it then, and I don't buy it now.

Sure, I may get a legit call on a pirated image somewhere that is (still) branded, but to be honest...the places people post pirated images are usually filled with people that love pirating images.

Piracy sucks...I am never proud to see my hard work and artistic skill posted somewhere that it's not supposed to be posted. A legit fair use I am fine with...almost everything else is nothing but thievery.

Sure I go after a few violators here and there, but trying to stalk \ every violator for a fee or a license is not feasible, and it's impossible...

Very important issue. You can stop the copying facilities on your article. By which the scammer will not be able to make copy & paste. Thanks for writing about the important issue.

Forum Tip #1: Read more of the thread than just the opening post prior to adding your reply..

Your information is repeat information, it's incomplete, and it's not all that helpful. It's best to add information to a thread, repeating what others have already stated is not adding much value here.

Once you start reading entire threads prior to posting --> you may actually learn a few things yourselves.

Prominently you can create the clear copyright notices and
Set up Google Search Authorship to prevent from the content stolen.

Use some script code to disallow the text selection to avoid the direct copying of your contents.
