Things not to tell a freelance writer:

Why? Because everyone is telling us these things all the time.

  1. I can't afford to pay you but if you work for me you are going to get a lot of exposure.
  2. Write some free articles for me and if they are good, I will give you lots and lots of work.
  3. Reduce your rates and this might lead to more assignments.


As a freelancer, what is your pet peeve statement from potential clients?


As a client, are you guilty of making any these statements?

    Never had any of those statements.

    But then in three years of freelance writing I have only ever had one piece returned for edits.

    So perhaps you only get sent crap if you are crap?

    That happens to graphic design freelancers as well very often. Usually it will happen in the beginning of our businees (first time we start it) when we don't have enough clients or testimonials to show them that we deserve into their count. But once we have a great proof of work, these silly requests will vapor by the time.
    It's common to clients to underestimate a new freelancer performance and then ask for such things.
    If you never have these requests in your freelancing journey... I'd say (in my opinion only)... your freelancing life is not complete.

    For the most part, writers who look for clients here on the Warrior Forum and on places such as ODesk are setting themselves up in competition with writers for whom English is a second language and they are forced to price their work accordingly.

    These days I only write for myself, but in years gone by I had a number of clients who were extremely happy to pay me hundreds of dollars for content I wrote for them. In over twenty years of writing for hire, I cannot ever remember hearing the three statements you give as examples.

    To me it suggests that you need to pay attention to choosing the right customer base. If you advertise cheap or "low end" compensation for your work, you're going to have to deal with people that will try to negotiate your prices even lower.

    By setting a high standard of writing and prices to match, you will appeal to a different clientele. In order to do this you may have to pass up some work in the beginning, but if you hone your skills and prove your worth, I think it will pay off in the long run. You will be sought out by those that will gladly pay for your writing skills.

    But If you're good, have a well build authority... suddenly, Forbes magazines will invite you to be a part of their writing team.
