Help with amazon affiliate

i joined amazon uk many months ago and a few months back i made my first website and added my first review.
a few weeks ago i redesigned my website making it more user friendly: easier nav, fixed header, tablet/pc responsive, and added my second review.

both my reviews are over 1200 words and each review has its own homepage within the main site. each review is spread over 10 pages with amazon links added where appropriate.
i feel my reviews give good points and info (always find more to add of course), text is readable/font choice, site looks simple and neat.

my site ranks on page one and two of google but only on product_name_reviews is searched

my amazon account shows clicks but i think these are only my clicks. i don't think i've had any visitors at all!
even google stats barely shows anything.

i'm ranked on page one bing too which is good.

now i do have a to do list and there are things i can do but i could use some advise and help please.
one of the best things i plan on trying is joining bing and using the free £75 ads to get visitors but i only want to do this once i feel my website is fully finished - extra proof reads, bit more content - just the little things.

How many people search for your keyword phrase each month? You can get some idea from Google Adwords Keyword Planner or from Google Webmaster Tools. If there are not many people searching then you're not going to make much money and you might want to consider different products to review. My most common keyword phrase gets about 20,000 searches / impressions per month.

Are you targeting any other keywords? I get over 400,000 monthly impressions from all keywords combined so my top keyword phrase is only responsible for 5% of my impressions (and only 1% of my traffic). Consider targeting more keywords.

How high do you rank on the first page? Looking through my keywords I see that my click-through-rate is often over 80% when I'm ranked #1 but only around 30% when I'm ranked #2 and of course much lower when I'm ranked lower. Overall my average ranking is #7 for all keywords and my CTR is about 7% which means I'm getting about 30,000 visitors per month from Google.

Are there forums where people would benefit from your site? I get a lot of traffic from forum links and from people searching for the name of my site on Google when it gets mentioned on a forum. My site name has become my most successful keyword phrase. Consider spreading the word about your site to people who would benefit from it.

What percentage of your visitors are clicking on your Amazon links? I get 30 Amazon visitors (according to Amazon) for every 100 site visitors (according to Google analytics) so my site's conversion rate is 30%. Consider ways to improve your conversion rate by link placement etc.

There is one last percentage to consider. Once people have searched for your keyword, visited your site and clicked on your Amazon link they still need to make a purchase. For my site I get 3-4 orders per 100 people who made it all the way through to Amazon. You will need large volumes of visitors to see any commissions.

To summarize all of the above: Are you measuring the right things so that you know what to fix?

      hello
thank you Shellirk for getting back to me.

keywords: not really sure how to use google planner and adwords i think wanted me to sign up straight away. i've added meta tags in the html. i've got lots of exact match product review names throughout my site.
keywords is certainly something i need to learn more about and master

      my rankings today are:
older review has dropped its now 11/14 page 1 google (has been 3/4 week ago)
newer review not made homepage yet page 3 of google - (much better review and hopping do well in rankings)

is my website name poor? i called my site specificnichereviews.co.uk (product, niche, reviews) i couldn't think of a better shorter name at the time.

forums: yes i think there are about 3-5 that i know of and my products i've reviewed are highly thought of and respected.
i don't know how to approach the forums. do i just intro myself and say hey i've got new site with two fantastic reviews please check me out. can i be that straight to the point or would i end up getting banned for advertising or spamming?

      clicks on amazon:
to be honest i don't think i'm getting any at all. a few days ago i had 60 clicks but that day i was testing the links. i think the only clicks i'm getting our my clicks. so i'm not really getting any visitors or clicks.
the product sells 5-10 per day easy and priced £100 and £180 for each product review
i've recently added more accessories at around £20 each.

link placements: each product has its own internal home page and links and then the review is spread over 10 pages with headings, paragraphed content which contains one link at top and one near bottom.

should i add general amazon banners to my site. currently my site has no banners as i wanted a clean simple design focused only on the products i'm promoting.

Listen man, I don't know what the numbers behind your keywords and website are, but you will make money only if:

    - the products on your website are in fact something that is selling in decent numbers on Amazon
    - your website gets targeted visitors, not those looking for free info
    - there are enough people looking to buy the products promoted on your site each month. You get these numbers by using Keyword Planner
    - your website gets enough visitors each month. If there are only few visitors here and there you won't make money

So, if you're not making money with your site, then something of the above mentioned is missing.

Here's the process to make money with Amazon through SEO:

    - Go to Amazon and digg a little deeper on Amazon to get your seed keywords, don't go for the most obvious products and keywords
    - Make sure the products you want to promote are selling. You can see how many customer reviews a specific product has. If there are many customer reviews you can be sure the product is selling.
    - Do a keyword research with keyword planner so that you can get searches per month for your keywords. Go for specific keywords only if you're happy with number of searches per month
    - Once you find some not so obvious products and keywords, then you need to assess the competition
    - If you find the keywords with decent number of searches per month and the related product is selling, and you also establish that there is no serious competition on Google for your keywords, then you create a website
    - Your website needs to have a certain type of a layout and content in order to rank and to convert visitors

Now, all of this is easier said than done. You need to do the above mentioned things correctly or the result will not come! If you don't know how each part of the above described process is completed, then you need to learn!

All of the above is related to driving traffic and making money through SEO. There are other ways to drive traffic to Amazon site but that's a different type of beast. Besides SEO you can drive traffic through:

    - paid ads, including banner ads and PPC
    - email drops with reputable lists
    - social traffic

Let me just say that in order to make money with Amazon using these traffic sources you need to do a different type of websites than those you use for SEO. Products for promotion using these traffic sources are selected differently and webpages need to have a somewhat different layout and content than what is used for websites intended for SEO.

Hm..I'm trying to help, but there are many things to learn for you. Everything I said here is true and that's the way to make money with Amazon, but you need to know how to do it correctly or it won't work. It's HOW you do it, not just WHAT you need to do! It can be done, I'm doing it, but you need to learn more! You need to learn how to do it correctly, so that it has an effect and results!

I apologize for repeating myself but it seems as though I need to.

    1) Use the Google Adwords Keyword Planner - It's free. Find out how many people are searching for your keywords. If the number is small then even if you do everything else right you will never make significant money. Find other keywords you could be targeting

    2) Use Google Webmaster Tools - Also free. Find out not only what people are searching for to get to your site but also get advice on how to improve your SEO. This can also give you ideas for other keywords to target. It could take up to a month before you see any data in the tool so sign up right away.

    3) Use Google Analytics - Find out how many people are visiting your site. Make sure you set it up so that it does not count your visits. You can't figure out how effective your site is if you aren't counting your visitors.

    4) Stop Clicking on Your Amazon Links - First, this is making your Amazon reports useless. Second, if you buy something on Amazon after clicking on one of your links you are violating their terms of service and can be banned from the Amazon Associates program.

    5) Get Involved in Your Niche - (this is copied straight from my other post "From $2 to $1,500 per Month..." - I built up traffic to my site by posting on forums for my niche. I did NOT post links just to promote my site. I got active in the forums by answering questions when I knew the answer or by helping people solve a problem when I knew the solution. Eventually I built my site so that I could post a link that answered the question or solved the problem. My focus on providing value to the community led to people becoming my advocates and promoting my site for me without being asked. These quality forum links are responsible for improving my rankings on search engines. By my fourth month a majority of my traffic was coming from search engines and that's now up to about two-thirds.

How do you know that the product sells 5-10 per day? Are you also selling the product that you are writing reviews for?

Why are your reviews spread over ten pages? How does this help your visitors?

I've never used Amazon banners. My other post says which types of links generate 75% of my earnings.

    hello shellerik
I don't mean to waste your time and i'm sorry if you feel your repeating yourself a little.
    - i'll stop clicking on my own links. i was only doing this to check they work.

Question: was it right of me to correct the amazon affiliate code, when i checked my site in W3 mark up it came up errors in amazon code so i correct the code to make it clean. the links work still but was i right to do this?

    - 2 products reviews each have own start page/home and each review is split up into apx 10 chapters.

when i first started i just used a single long page design with all 10 chapters on the same page but i felt this made the website unprofessional and unnecessary long so i created a sub nav and divided up the chapters onto 10 smaller pages for easier reading. the review is easy to nav.
but do you think this is bad idea - splitting up my review like that.

thank you for your advise i am taking notes and going to re-think my plan based on what you've said.

one more thing regarding the other poster 'Andreis'. What does he mean by certain website design/layout in order to rank and get clicks. i don't understand this. are there any examples?

I just want to make a comment here about the volume of visitors needed to get click-thrus and orders on Amazon.

I have a 50 pages site focused very narrowly on a small sub-niche in health. My traffic is very low- something like 100 unique visitors a week. It used to be more (although never what anyone here would consider respectable) but Google won't forgive for once making the mistake of buying links. Most of the traffic I do have comes from Bing and Yahoo.

But even with low traffic, I do make a little money, around $40 -$70 per month, and my conversion rate is sometimes over 10%. I'm sure this is because the site is so targeted.

I keep going with site and trying to make it better. I know it used to be too wordy, so I edited it a lot. I wonder if the OP has that problem, since he/she said their reviews go on for 10 pages. My problem on my site is I don't think the layout is the best. A post above mentioned the need to have a good layout for ranking and conversions. If someone could say more about layout, that would be great.

hello fayeAnne. The poster is a He.
You may be right that I have too many words/pages. Perhaps I should simplify my review a little.

    hello
the advice so far been great. I have another couple questions:

    1. how big should the number ideally be for adwords result in google, whats a good average score (obviously bigger is better but whats too low)

    2. when you guys started out how did you go about with linking a banking accounts to your amazon account.
did you add a new personal account to your amazon or use a business account or can you have personal account and link to a business paypal.
