Hey, [First Name] Is Personalizing your Emails Still Works In 2016?
Long time ago, maybe in 2012, I used to be very Impressed when I saw my Name in the subject line of an Email, It looked personal, like the brand or blog have sent an Email specifically for me , But then again, I realized that it's an automated Email, But I always wondered how they managed to put my name into the Email ?
Today, A lot of people say that It's better to use only the Email field In order to increase conversions...
But I didn't want to sacrifice Email personalization in the sake of conversions.
Until I saw this article on thenextweb.com.... People Hate Email That Names Them
It says that when friends communicate they often don't use each others name in the Email's subject line, Instead of ''Hey James, wanna go out tonight''... they mostly use ''Hey Douchebag, wanna go out tonight'' - especially if they are close friends...
Now referring to your subscribers as ''Douchebags'' in your Emails will seem weird, but if if you can use it in a funny witty way, It might work in terms of personnalization much better than using their Emails - When Is the last time you used your friend's name in your Email?
According to Clay Colling (A Mod at LeadPages):
''Friends often don't use your name in emails to you. when you collect two fiends instead of one, opt-in rates go down, Everyone knows that they're getting an mass email these days. Just because you have their name in the subject lines doesn't mean they're going to be more excited about your email. In fact, generally speaking, name is subject lines are used almost exclusively in automated emails these days (when was the last time a friend placed your name in a subject line)... And people often use fake names in the name field.''
I believe Personalization still works, especially in Non-MMO Niches, where people don't know anything about Autoresponder...
In fact, It turns out NOT using a name in your Emails - Surprisingly, Can make your Emails more personal and Informal
So, what do you think we should do from now on?
