Ive tried so many applications including Adobe and so far I cant seem to get it where upon changing the doc to pdf the words that i hyperlinked in microsoft word, are active in the pdf.

Their not active. They are blue but you cant click on them

Does anyone have any advice. I have to change a big document into a pdf and it has lots of words that are hyperlinked and working in the doc but are not showing up as hyperlinked and clickable when its turned into a pdf?

  • This has been going on for years. PDF programs, even ones from major vendors, are buggy. And the particular case where the link anchor text is different from the URL apparently gives them fits.

The only program I've found that consistently does it right is OpenOffice.org. It can read a Word doc and export it as PDF correctly. The best news is that it's free.

    HTH.

  • I was having the exact same problem and also recently discovered OpenOffice. It works. I have made pdf docs from word and all my links work. I also tried numerous applications which failed.

    • Another recommendation for openoffice.org, free software that will give you what you need.

  • I experienced that problem once when I sent the document to the Adobe Printer or Distiller thingy. If you choose the other option to convert to Adobe PDF instead, the links should be live.
  • It's a common problem with the so-called big PDF converters out there. If you don't want to install open office (which is an excellent recommendation by the way) you can use an online program. I use Free PDF Convert and it never fails me.

You can try it out HERE

    • As others have said, common problem.

I use BCL Easy PDF but Open Office will work fine.

      Pros and Cons:

      Pros

Open Office is a great all purpose office suite for more than just making docs.

      It's free.

      Cons

As opposed to just getting BCL Easy PDF which interfaces nicely with
Microsoft Office if you already have that installed, Open Office requires
that you have a bit of tech knowhow to download and install. It's not
something that the novice should tackle. Plus, the download and
      installation does take some time.

Google Docs? Just open your document in Google Docs and save it as a PDF. Easy.
  • You can use Google Documents to do it too, if you know HTML: http://docs.google.com

Just load up your PDF, then click the Edit menu, then click Edit HTML and a new window will pop open. Just use the HTML code for creating anchor links within the document if that's what you need (like for a Table of Contents with live links). Or simple link code for outbound links.

The last step is to click File, then Download File As, then choose PDF. It outputs it as PDF and your links will all work. I use it all the time.
