Just Curious: Just Wondering Why Google is Giving out so Much Free

Recently i stumbled on a post which shows over 40 products google is offering to the public free of charge. I also discovered that I am already using some of them.

Is there something people like us dont know. Why are they giving out so much. I am just curious. I want to know one or two lessons can be learnt from this.

Google is all about the user experience. They want the public coming to their site to be thrilled with the experience of their search or whatever other service the user engages. They want the largest audience possible so they like to give things away.

    Why is that important?

The people that pay Google are the ones that advertise with them. And advertisers want their message in front of as many eyeballs as they can muster.

Quora: "Google makes the majority of its money from ads shown as part of search results."

"About 89% of Google's US$66 billion in revenue came from advertising. Yeah you heard right, it's advertising, and again advertising. Google's majority revenue comes from two advertising platforms -- Google AdWords and Google AdSense."

Relevancy of information for those who search is critical. It keeps them happy and coming back and that's what advertisers want.

Thanks for your thoughts and a good one for me. The freebies draw the audience and the advertising revenue brings the profits.

Google is all about user experience. They release cool stuff so people stay longer on their website and trust them more. Doing this they're able to get more money from advertisers and make money that route.

One more key factor to be considered: Data.

How does one better understand his user/customer? Observing them utilizing their own software/service/product.

By providing additional frills, Google is able to tap into other aspects of online activities, gather user experience information, which will then be re-routed back into enhancing their main core function of getting consumers relevant search results.

There are also many other ways of monetizing that valuable user data. I will not speculate into that.

This is the key. IMO, Google is a data mining company above and beyond being just a search engine. They want to know as much about you as possible.

They want to read your email, know what's on your computer and they even want to know what you say. A while back, they filed a patent that helps them listen to your mic if it's plugged into your computer. I wouldn't be surprised if this desire doesn't include mobile devices now.

Google gives nothing for free. They might not charge dollars, but you pay. The 'free' stuff is a cheaper way of collecting data (and, probably, the data is more reliable than what they'd get from sending out surveys).
