Looking for some ideas on ways to monetize history. I have a passion for world history but am finding there are limits in ways to monetize. The most interesting thing I could do would be to create a blog around interesting historical events but in terms of monitizing it seems maybe selling books or advertising is about it? Thoughts?

I don't think we need more history books. Unless you're talking about your own history, everything you write will be based on things other people have already recorded.

Why not develop a portal for history buffs? A place where they can congregate, make friends, discuss and engage one another. Charge them a small fee to be a member of a private community where they can share their expertise and socialize. It's been done in other niches. It's best if the pool of prospects has rabid fans.

One idea would be to sell Public Domain books, i.e. books that have passed beyond the Copyright time-limit.

You can find these for free (just Google it), and re-sell them or package them into sets to sell to people interested in history.

Another idea would be selling Amazon history books, and DVD's.

    Hope that helps

If you are very passionate about History , then Create content around interesting figures in History .. Do a search and analyse data what are the historical penchant of people.

Make interesting stories presentable in video formats and create series.. there are already some attempts in this area. Target already established history channels fans and give them quality stuff. Keep good things available give a small gap before you release next stuff. you will build up a good fan base and then monetizing will be easy.

Tutor students who have trouble with history. Write books that break down specific historical events and make them more interesting and easier to understand.

Make a book or blog about various historical sites to visit.

Write a book for writers who want to write about certain time periods. List things like what people ate, what they wore, types of occupations.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head....

This is awesome. Keep the idea's coming. I never thought about just building a good blog and monitizing later with product sales. Guess I don't really have to sell something right out of the gate.

I think that it is interesting yet quite unusual theme. You can try quite standard approaches like blog, guest posts on other blogs/community sites, tutoring or freelancing. Afterwards you will see what might work and also what is fun for you.

I'm not sure history is the most profitable niche out there. 20 years ago, the History Channel shows were all about history. Now, many of the shows are about lumber jacks, truck drivers and searching for buried treasure.

You may be able to tie in history with adventure travel affiliate programs...such as pyramids (Egypt and Yucatan), castle tours, historical recreations, renaissance/medieval fairs and festivals, historical landmarks, for example.

Things like art, antiques and collectibles may also be an option, if you can find relevant affiliate programs.

    MW13,

Are you a good writer, especially of fiction? If so, you could write short stories or novelettes about characters in history and make them true to the period or time setting. [ Even if you don't write, a good ghost writer could work under your direction and produce some Kindle books of interest.]

Here's another idea, a little ambitious maybe, but it could sell to people who love history. Start publishing a monthly or bi-monthly history magazine (or even newsletter) and sell it on a subscription basis. But don't write all the articles yourself - let other history fans submit material to you as the editor.

Follow the Hollywood model. Find a compelling story in history, then change the gender, race and/or sexual orientation of the primary characters.

I agree with Kurt, tie it into treasure hunting. the cost of a decent metal detector is in the hundreds of dollars.
